I can't believe that i've never heard of this before, but there's a really cool vector graphics app called Cenon (http://www.cenon.info) that just released a new beta. It's available for openstep, gnustep, and osx (cocoa, of course). This thing starts up in a flash and looks like it's very nice for simple to moderate vector work. I've been praying for months now that Sodipodi (http://www.sodipodi.com) will make it out of the unstable tree in fink, but this looks like it will hold me over for quite a while.
With ghostscript installed, you can even import/export pdf, although it doesn't seem to recognize my fink ghostscript install (but with quartz, pdf shouldn't be that hard to implement natively).
