Remember that report regarding Nvidia's plan of renaming its current graphics cards? Well it's true and, courtesy of the recently-released GeForce 178.15 driver we now know what to expect from the Green Graphics Goblin.

Three lines sourced from the 178.15 reveal Nvidia's renaming plan and they are:

NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0615.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTS 150"
NVIDIA_G94.DEV_0626.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 130"
NVIDIA_G96.DEV_0646.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 120"

These suggest that the G92-powered cards (GeForce 9800 models) will be renamed to GeForce GTS 1x0, while the G94 and G96 cards (GeForce 9600, 9500s) will be known as GeForce GT 1x0. This new naming scheme, which should help with making Nvidia's card offer easier to grasp, is expected to be introduced in about two weeks.

It's true, the 9800 is the most underwhelming thing to come out of nvidia. And it will be disappointing if nvidia tries to play this name change off as any kind of update

It's more to clarify their overpopulated lineup. Have they succeeded? Not by a longshot.

Personally I feel that dropping the letters (GTX, GTS, GT, GS, GSO) and using a straight numbering scheme with three digits would be the most easily decipherable. Example:

High End (GTX 280, 4870X2) -> 290 $450-$600
High Mid (GTX 260, 4870) -> 270 $300-$400
High Affordable (9800GT, 4850) -> 250 $200-$300
Mid High (9600GT, 4670) -> 240 $140-$180
Mid Low (9500GT, 4650) - 230 $80-$110
Low (9300GS, 4200) -> 210 $30-$60

Later versions, like the 7900GTX in comparison with the 7800GTX could add a 5 to the end (295).

In addition, while the equivilent existing cards are from different time periods within their respective brand, they still more or less illustrate the performance point.

Having one number for each generation is definitely a good idea, have 2 numbers (GT 100 series and GTX 200 series) is dumb.

Is the above scheme perfect as is? Decidedly not. Nvidia and ATI have decided to have more cards and more price brackets with little difference in between, making their model numbers much harder to figure out than the one above. Will my "vision" ever happen? No.

The 173.15 may not be WHQL certified yet, which is why they may not be on the main download page. I know that EVGA usually posts the most up to date driver, WHQL or not. I'd check there, but their site is down. Wonder if it's got anything to do with no longer being NV exclusive? Probably not.

On a side note, ATI cards with EVGA factory OC sound pretty good.

So, with this, I take it the 8600 GT has become the 9600 GT aka GTS 150
thus, does the same renaming strategy apply to the 8600M GT?
Hence the doomed "8600M GT" is now the 9600M GT - which exist in the current (new) range of MacBookPro's...

Oh wait, Apple hasn't really given up a upgrade, just thrown us the whole nVIDIA package and a shiny new case!! Minus some ports.
