I have searched and found many posts with this issue but not one of the suggested fixes is working. This wasn't a problem until shortly after I updated to 10.5.5. It is a new macbook using mail for AOL free mail. I have tried using the default ports, manually using ports 25, 465, 587. I have tried modifying the default packet size in the enet settings. Deleting the mail account and reconfiguring as new. Nothing is working. I can receive mail fine just not able to send. Is there anyone else experiencing these problems or anyone have any suggestions? Not sure if ATT.NET (formerly Sbcglobal.net has recently started blocking certain SMPT ports or not) Their support website is lacking and I can't find the information.
Any help or suggestions?
Thanks in advance

With all of you Mac Wizards on this forum, is there nobody that can help? :(

No one is helping, because quite frankly AOL sucks.
Anyways what server are you using. I know AOL changes their server names all the time without warning people.

It is just the free AOL web mail. My host/ISP provider is sbc. It must be something to due with AOL SMTP settings, it is also getting the same error with my iPhone both from my home connection and also at work wi-fi, which tells me it isn't the ISP filtering any SMTP packets. Funny thing is that I run the connection doctor from the app and it logs in and connects to the smtp server just fine. It is odd... using smtp.aol.com

Have you found a solution to this issue?
I'm no fan of AOL, but I have a client with same issue -- mail.app can't send through AOL reliably, even though the connection doctor shows a connection...eventually. I'm wondering if Mail.app is timing out on the smtp server, because AOL is responding so slowly?
I have also tried mapping the smtp port manually, turning off SSL, but no luck.
Thanks,
Jason

I am having the same problem with my AOL mail but strangely, I have two AOL accounts - one in the UK and one in the USA and the problem is only with the screen names on the USA account...
It applies to both my iPhone and when using Mac Mail (also just upgraded to 10.5.5).
Help.....pleeeasse
