I just ran software update and now my powerbooks running slow as a dog. Every site I hit is slow slow slow where on my powermac with 802.11b I am hitting everything very fast. I don't know what the problem is but it took my longer to login to the macrumors forums on the powerbook than to login and post this on my powermac.

Good update(s)! I say updates because I also did 10.3.2, QT, Security 2004, iCal, and iTunes. Just as fast as before. It's been about 4 hours and everything is dandy. I did repair permissions before and after. Boot up time didn't take a performance hit like everyone said it would. Safari and Mail working great too!

is causing a ruckus with your local neigborhood servers.
It has been clogging up the internet a little lately. It just happens it started around the same time the security update came up.

I have had some major problems with the latest security update. Check out this thread at apple's site:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?128@69.9Ac6a260aaS.53965@.688dc633
don't know if the link will work, but the thread is called: "Security update disables Apple applications"
ridiculous. My powerbook is useless now.

It's a bummer that happened, but it's only a very small group of users who are encountering this.
Gee, trashing prefs. That's a hard fix. Come on...

Actually, it was not a fix. It made things worse for me. Thanks for your help though.:(

Come on now.. even the smallest 12" powerbook would make an eye-catching paperweight, and a 17" would make a fine cutting board!
Yes, that's exactly how stupid "my powerbook is useless now" sounds.
Since you made at least one backup of everything on your drive before mucking with the OS, and an additional backup of anything you considered vital... so just restore your backups.

Right...
So after restoring the Library to the "pre-'mucking'" state, I'm back to the apple apps just not working.
Boy, this is great. <---sarcasm I thought the panther discussion pages here were for getting help, not heat.

Funny, doesn't look like you asked for any...but here's some anyway.
Have you done any/all of the following?
-repaired permissions (if Disk Utility runs)
-installed any other software at the time that could account for the problems
-tried creating a new account or logging into an existing one and seeing if the same behavior is there

I have booted from the os disk and repaired the disk. I have repaired permissions. I have run diskwarrior.
The second user account, which I created when I installed the OS, is totally clean. In fact, I think that this was the first time I've ever logged into it.
The same things happen.
Ideas?....

Are there any other applications besides Apple ones that don't work?
Are there any Apple ones that do work?
You didn't answer my question about new software installs.
If you can, try clearing you caches with something like Cocktail and check out this guy's list of font problems (http://homepage.mac.com/juhaotava/fontproblems/panther.html#Anchor-14210) (from the discussion on Apple.com/support).

I installed the Security Update on Monday January 26th. It was done at my local Apple Store. The Mac Genius was the one that upgraded me to Panther. So far Panther is running as smooth as a cat. :)
The problems that I'm having are not related to the update, it's just my virgin knowledge of updating information from OS 9 to X.

There have not been any installs since the update. (except cocktail just now) I was able to install cocktail, though I was not able to run it. I cannot open a finder window though, so I had to use launchbar to open the app. Then it could be launchbar, except launchbar will open other apps fine.
So far, Safari, iTunes, Finder, iPhoto, and cocktail don't work. Safari bounces twice in the dock, then nothing. iTunes attempts to open (i get the triangle in the dock), but then, before it actually opens, I get the "unexpectedly quit" dialog. iPhoto got all the way to "loading images" before it crashed. Trying to open a finder window relaunches the finder. Trying to rename a file that is sitting on the desktop relaunches the finder.
Mail, Address Book, TextEdit, Preview all work. This seems to contradict the "necessary fonts" thing on the font guy's page. He seems to include Safari, Addressbook, and mail in the apps that usually falter for having bad fonts. The only third party fonts that may have been installed would've been installed with MSWord. It has been installed and working fine for quite some time.
I tried to post the crashlogs, but they were too long to post here.
If you have any more suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks,
heidilux

I would suggest removing any hacks/customisations that you're using on the system.
I've yet to have a problem with the update on either machine.

How about Terminal? I recommended Cocktail because it automates some cache cleanup, but you can do it via command line, too. Failing that, maybe single user mode would do. Either way, we're heading into hairier territory.
I also second bous' recommendation about 3rd party haxies.

Just so you guys know, the final code for that security update was tested for 12 days before release. A normal security update is usually tested for 3-4 days.
I am not sure if this is significant though, you guys can make the assumption. ;)
