Hi there, long time lurker here.

Hopefully this isn't an entirely selfish topic and other people are in a similar situation. I'm looking to get an iPhone and trying to predict whether it's likely there will be a price drop between now and Xmas (This is for the UK).

With the current financial situation it seems possible that companies will be doing something to try and coax people into buying the more expensive gadgets as gifts, but of course I don't think that O2 are exactly struggling to sell units even now.

Obviously no one can know for sure but I'm purely after informed opinions

One would think that would be up to the carrier of your service, as they are the ones paying Apples the subsidies for every iPhone sold... Who knows?

I think the deal currently given is very good and a whole lot better than what was originally offered when the iPhone first came to the UK. Therefore with this settling down 02 have worked out what they can afford and what the consumers can afford. The have priced it accordingly. I feel that they won't have too much trouble shifting units at Christmas due to the fact that it is the in gadget.

Combing these together makes me feel that there won't be a discount. They may add in a little sweetener but I feel this may be a slight bump in texts/minutes for a limited period rather than a price decrease.

Of course all of this is pure conjecture on my part and as I am not connected with either of the companies involved holds no real backing :).

how much cheaper do you people want it to be?

Possibly. Though the price cut might come in the form of a 32gb iphone for the same price people are paying for the 16gb iphone now. The 16gb would then be reduced in price to what people are currently paying for the 8gb.

I think those of us who already own an iphone are a bit unwilling to consider the possibility at the moment. :)

I think this sounds very feasible, but I don't think we'll see a 32 gig until sometime next year.

I think that possibly upgraded models at current price points are more likely.

Personally, I'm holding out for at least 32 GB before upgrading to 3G. I'm not about to spend money for a new iPhone, and lock myself into that model for two years, without at the very minimum, a capacity bump!

I'd really love 64 GB. That would at least give me the option to replace my iPhone, and my 60 GB iPod at the same time.

I doubt there will be a price cut before Christmas. Maybe some new colors, though...

I know it wont happen, but a brushed silvery metal iphone case would be awesome.

Agreed. There really is no incentive for Apple or at&t to cut the price.

It can always be cheaper...no one will complain (except those that paid more)

i don't see AT&T offering a bigger subsidy than they currently do.

The only possible scenario would be a price drop in the unsubsidized models, but I doubt that is going to happen and it wouldn't be a better price point than the subsidy offers. And on the long chance that Apple cuts the wholesale price to AT&T, I don't see them passing that on to their customers. I thin AT&T would just enjoy a higher margin.

So, in a word, no.

Hehe well it is still $800 for a PAYG phone over here, but yeah I agree it doesn't seem likely there will be a price cut.

...which means I can get one asap :)

Agreed. I think that's quite likely, but that's it.

They'd probably pull the 8GB model at this point.

Well, if they do not do so they will have a hard time competing against BETTER and CHEAPER phones like BlackBery Storm and the android from google that actually are able to maintain reception...

i think that the PAYG offering from O2 will be dropped in price - at£400 ($800) it is too expensive at the moment.

I can see it dropping by perhaps as much as £100 in time for the xmas rush

if they are making money on the most basic contract iphone (£99 for 8Gb + 18*£30 = £639 (and you need to assume they are making money on that) then over the same lifecycle the PAYG has room for a cut - O2 will receive revenue from the PAYG unit regardless i mean, it' not like you can unlockit and use it on Voda so their investment (subsidy - if there is one at £349!) is protected anyway.

just my thoughts
