ugggg. I dropped my air today! I am so careful, and the thing was pristine until this morning. Anyway, I have a small dent on the upper right corner. Nothing is damaged, just the dent.

So I want to pass this on now to one of my kids and get another, but do you think that the New MBA will be out soon?
I hate to admit it, but the same thing happened with me and the iphone. I passed it on to my husband, bought another one--- then lo and behold the G3 came out. So I have an iphone in my drawer I don't even use....

Yes she is soooo selfish. I can't believe someone would be so cruel as to pass on a working macbook air with a dent in it! If someone gave me a working macbook air with a dent, I would punch them in the face and tell them to give me one without a dent. Oh, and if they put a gun to my head and forced me to use it, I would use my judo master skills to disarm them and then punch them in the face.

Btw snow, you better pray I can't find you or you don't care what your face looks like. I mean, if you care about what your face looks like, you shouldn't be carrying it around. Make a statue of it out of granite to remember what it looks like, that will be harder for me to damage with my fists.

OP...I'd wait for as long as you possibly can, say a week. Then go get one if newer models come out.

I've dropped my MBP three times, putting dents in it twice. It looks like it's been used. If I were you, I'd be fine with it, unless it spontaneously combusted or started smelling like battery acid. Just be careful next time.

I think it's more of the fact that the moment something isn't in pristine condition you try and get rid of it. Wow, it has a dent, get over it, just use it instead of wasting more money on something that you already have.

It's fair enough giving it to your family, but I think it goes a bit far to consider an entire computer to not be good enough for you just because it has a dent....which the OP caused herself. I'd be more worried about being married to or being the kid of someone that seems to have a horrendous case of OCD. If she were my mom I'd have told her to GTFO and to deal with it herself.

If the computer still functions and does all the tasks you need it to do, then why replace it? Personally, cosmetic defect wouldn't be a good enough reason for me to shell out a crap load of money for something new. I don't know if that particular panel is removable, but mabey you could simply replace the panel if it bothers you that much?

I'm with the OP on this one. One dent would drive me nuts. It looks so new, except...... there is this dent. I say, drop it again. and again. It needs at least dents. Don't forget to scratch it too. Make sure you have a good story for each too. For instance: "OMG - that dent, that was the time I was running for the airport gate, and this kid dropped his ice-cream cone right in front of me.... I went one way, and my Air went the other way... hoo boy, that was a messy day!" :rolleyes:

It pains me to buy them something and within days (husband included) they have demolished it; skated with it, and accidentally grinded it, or swam with it in the pool, or left it outside in the rain. The iphone I gave him is scratched now beyond belief. He just shrugs... "Use it til you can't recognize it", is their motto.
They are the most active boys I have ever seen! They don't need new, they just need to start off with functional.
My kids are not quite old enough to work, or they would be buying their own stuff.
So, in the mean time--they get my old gadgets. That's the way it works.

I don't think anyone is questioning the hand-me-down setup. They (including me) cannot believe you'd hand down a perfectly good laptop because of one dent.

The hang-up of having perfect and new items all the time is what has gotten society into this mess to begin with (buying bigger and newer houses, using credit cards to get the latest gear, buying the latest car, etc). Maybe you should take a lesson from what you want your husband and kids to learn: "You don't need new; you just need functional."

If your kids cannot take care of stuff, then they shouldn't get new gifts (including hand-me-downs) until they learn to respect what they own. But by the sound of it, they aren't learning that respect from their parents.

As for the comment to Ivan P, you'd seriously put your kids in foster care if they said that? I agree they should not be saying that at all, especially to their parents, but that punishment doesn't fit the crime. Seems like an easy out for the parents who may not want to deal with it.

Thinking about it, it could be attributed to different values and attitudes. I'd be absolutely stunned if I was ever given a $2,500 notebook (that's how much they cost here) from a family member because of a dent. But I guess if your family doesn't mind, then who cares? I can't say I'd give a computer away over it, though like you I do like having things in very good condition, but in the end what other people do with their things doesn't affect me in any way.

I think you miss his point... For me, if my mom/dad wants to give me their MBA because of 1 small dent, I would strongly go against them and say "Hey, mom/dad, the laptop is not damaged... I know we are pretty well off but the money could go towards your retirement or saving up to open our own business or even hey enjoy the money yourselves and buy yourselves some nice dinner for like 10 times with that kind of money"

Like he mentioned, it is probably a different set of values enacted in your house and it's fine with me. I can't make you change your family values but I am just boggled with the fact that you change your iPhone and MBA just because of one scratch/dent.

I love my gadgets and I hate to see them scratched/dented myself but because of this.... I tried to make any precaution like not taking off the plastic that comes with my monitor or install front and back screen protector on my iPhone 3G or purchase sleeve case for my iPhone and Laptop...

However, stuff happens and I have a story to tell: Before I upgrade to iPhone 3G, I dropped my iPhone... I was very upset about this at one point not because it is scratched (dropped on the roadside ><) but because I can't get a better value when selling it before I upgrade to the 3G version... The main reason for me to upgrade is obviously not because it's scratched, rather, the 3G speed which enables me to tether to my laptop and the fact that Northwest Indiana is getting 3G late September... otherwise, I would still be using my old scratched and dented iPhone until now.

When I have kids, I want to show them how to live their life frugally and this is not a bad thing... My parents are pretty well off I should say (thank God for that) but they raised me to save a lot and if possible, do not spend money on something unless necessary... Just like the more information the better, I believe that the more we save our money (in investments or saving accounts), the better :)

By living frugally, doesn't mean you don't enjoy live... Of course you can go to nice dinner or buy the latest gadgets whenever you want but the cost benefit analysis of buying new gadgets must and should about add up... I believe that purchasing a totally new laptop because it's dented slightly does not add up... But hey... it is your money and I can't tell you how to spend it. Just thought I would share my point of view on this one

Wow! There is certainly some hostility to this thread! Guys, its HER money she can do with it what she pleases. Its no different if your vehicle gets a dent and you run and pay $$$ to get that fixed.

I would say give it as a hand me down, get your self a nice new one when the refresh hits. I'm sure one of your family members will be absolutely thrilled to have your old one. (My family members love my hand-me down electronics. They haven't bought computers in years!...wait...actually ever!)

I have no problem with you handing down your stuff to your kids and husband (it is after all YOUR money) but it appears you have the same problem as them. You too are rough with stuff, which is why you often have them replaced. By the sounds of it, if you kept the items as long as they did, it too would be unrecognizable.

If you want to give your son your MBA (not a bad thing) then do that but don't try to justify the behavior as him being rough when the reason you are giving it away is because you were rough with it first. The apple didn't fall far from the tree in your family. You are all a rough bunch. :D

Just say you like new things and be done with it, who cares what other people say. Is it wasteful? Probably. Is it a crime? No. Overall verdict? Spend, spend, spend away so long as it doesn't get in the way of paying your other bills where we the taxpayers will have to bail you out.

I think you miss his point... For me, if my mom/dad wants to give me their MBA because of 1 small dent, I would strongly go against them and say "Hey, mom/dad, the laptop is not damaged... I know we are pretty well off but the money could go towards your retirement or saving up to open our own business or even hey enjoy the money yourselves and buy yourselves some nice dinner for like 10 times with that kind of money"

Like he mentioned, it is probably a different set of values enacted in your house and it's fine with me. I can't make you change your family values but I am just boggled with the fact that you change your iPhone and MBA just because of one scratch/dent.

I love my gadgets and I hate to see them scratched/dented myself but because of this.... I tried to make any precaution like not taking off the plastic that comes with my monitor or install front and back screen protector on my iPhone 3G or purchase sleeve case for my iPhone and Laptop...

However, stuff happens and I have a story to tell: Before I upgrade to iPhone 3G, I dropped my iPhone... I was very upset about this at one point not because it is scratched (dropped on the roadside ><) but because I can't get a better value when selling it before I upgrade to the 3G version... The main reason for me to upgrade is obviously not because it's scratched, rather, the 3G speed which enables me to tether to my laptop and the fact that Northwest Indiana is getting 3G late September... otherwise, I would still be using my old scratched and dented iPhone until now.

When I have kids, I want to show them how to live their life frugally and this is not a bad thing... My parents are pretty well off I should say (thank God for that) but they raised me to save a lot and if possible, do not spend money on something unless necessary... Just like the more information the better, I believe that the more we save our money (in investments or saving accounts), the better :)

By living frugally, doesn't mean you don't enjoy live... Of course you can go to nice dinner or buy the latest gadgets whenever you want but the cost benefit analysis of buying new gadgets must and should about add up... I believe that purchasing a totally new laptop because it's dented slightly does not add up... But hey... it is your money and I can't tell you how to spend it. Just thought I would share my point of view on this one

Man, I have a lot of respect for you. One of the few people in this country who get it. and i assume you're youngish? If i had a son or daughter these are principles i'd be thrilled if they had.

and yea, back to the topic. it's not just that it's a hand me down. that's the one thing that is right with this OP. That said, let's face it.

it's like when i used to buy my dad birthday gifts when i was 10--i definitely bought them with an eye towards him giving them to me anyway. Sneaky, got what I wanted, typical of a selfish kid.

in the midst of a crumbling economy, a person posting on a forum and bragging about a gross overreaction that will set her whole family back $1699. This is exactly the reason this country is screwed economically. because people fritter their money away, simply because they can make more and if they cannot, they can just maxx out the plastic.

i've been on shoots at these mcmansion suburban crap houses that cost 3x what they should. i've talked to guys there who are making $15-$20/hr. HOnest living. Wife. 3 Kids. And they are PUSHED into moving into this area by their wives because of the "school district" or "its the up and coming neighborhood"

these are families that, combined MIGHT barely tough $80-100,000 combined income, and the pressure on them to buy a shoddily built $400,000 mcmansion is shocking.

This isn't that far off. Americans ≠ the concept of humility.

Edit: Also interesting to me is that you can deem them a lucky family because they can apparently buy and replace tech items with no restraint? I'd say that's a poor family that has their priorities misplaced on inanimate objects.

I'm going to be nice to this woman, because hey if i could i would have had new laptops several times in the past couple of years.
My current iBook G4 has a bent screen, no letters on the keyboard through over use and a little crack on the palm rest, it still runs panther, its had a new logic board and gotten cd's stuck in the drive so many times I've lost count, yet my insurers never replaced it with a new model (As you can imagine, i can't wait until next week when i will *hopefully* be getting a new one)
If i could have afforded to, i would have changed it straight after the screen bent, even though from what i could tell it still worked fine (which surprised me enormously) but i can remember when i dropped it, and it was more the idea that it might break more easily in the future that made me consider getting a new one. I'm not sure if this is maybe one of your reasons too, but I'm imagining your sons would only use it for the internet and things like my younger sister does, and i would have given mine to her, because it doesn't matter if she causes it more damage as she is only using it for browsing, where as i have a dissertation to work on! So i guess what I'm saying in a roundabout way is that i sort of understand your logic, If it has that damage, then it might get more damaged in the future and you might not want to risk that happening with your important files!!! I certainly have been dreading losing my work for about 2 years!
I also understand your debate about whether to just go get a new one now or wait, i was in the same boat about a macbook so i reallllly hope there are new updates next week, My student loan came through and i was all geared to go get a new one and then i saw the rumors!! I personally have a dilemma in that I'm worried about dents and things in the rumored aluminium casing, so I'm not sure whether to buy or not. Basically i set myself a date when i cant really wait for a new one any more, and if they aren't released by then i will settle for the current model, so i hope this helps you decide whether to take the plunge or not! If you wait like i am, to kill the time i am instead buying a couple of accessories for when i get the new one, makes the few weeks its been go quicker :D
I hope that when the new one comes out you enjoy it and that your kids love their new computer too!

If my Air was more or less for work - as it used to be, before I fully realised just what a piece of crap it was - I would replace it if it had a major blemish such as a dent. I've replaced a number of Bendybook Pros for cosmetic reasons in the last two years, which have either been passed to others not using them in a public-facing mode, sold, or given away.

In a domestic setting? Hmmm... What with Apple being the 'Chattering soccer mom with a need to display status's computer of choice', I think you can expect a fair bit of talk like this. It's not entirely unwarranted, as many of these buyers will probably choose Apple based on how it looks more than anything else.
