It seems that the feds have decided that the virus tracking companies just aren't cutting the mustard in getting the word out on e-mail worms, etc.

U.S. unveils cyber warning system

I wonder if they're going to sell their mailing list? 😉

This is freakin' ridiculous!

Ridiculous!

I can't believe that the gov't actually thinks they can do a better job notifying us of viruses than our IT depts at work, or than our anti-virus alert systems at home.

Do they have access to some confidential info that clues them in on when a virus is spreading? By they time they know, we'll know.

But then again, maybe I am misunderstanding the situation because I use a mac.😉

i don't want a federal alert every time a virus knocks down corporate networks... i want a federal holiday. i can't get my work done because of this crap, why do i need the government to email me and tell me this?

Homeland Security should switch over to Mac's first. They would need greater reliability, prior to entering the anti virus brigade.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., quickly criticized the alert system, describing it as inadequate because it doesn’t require companies that suffer major virus outbreaks to notify the government. He also predicted that hackers will mimic the e-mail alerts transmitted by Homeland Security to trick computer users. “I would bet money that will happen,” Schumer said.

didnt the homeland security team like go with microsoft "because of their continued commitment to security..."

if the people who run that that org can make a choice like that...well we are in big big trouble

Well, according to the U.S. Postal Service's 5-Year Strategic Plan, in 2001:

"It committed to streamlining operations, attracting new revenue by adding value to its core products, and motivating and empowering employees to meet the coming challenges within a performance-based culture."

After all, isn't it the thought that counts? Oh, wait -- with security, mabye it's more about performance.
