Although I don't frown on people who do, I'll never understand why people use music for ringtones. Even though you love that song, most other people who hear it ring either don't like it or have never heard it.

Now before we all go up in arms about individuality and "who cares what others think; it's MY phone", read the first part of my first sentence. Thank you.

I think people can still be individual by using a ringtone that actually sounds like a phone ringing. For instance, I'm using several from a ringtone pack that was posted here on the forums (can't wait for part two!) and the ringtone from the iPhone commercials.

I use a program called iToner - Lets you make lot of the songs in iTunes ringtones without paying an additional 99 cents - They offer a 30 day free trial to check it out and thats what I'm doing right now. So far so good - and yes - I have no affiliation with that company

My friend used to have that ringtone for his girlfriend!

I use Classic Two (those who have used the ring pack I setup will know the tone).

I use a thing called GarageBand; don't pay a thing and there's no 30 day trial period...

MBA jingle - alarm
iPhone jingle - default
and about 10 other "songs" that I can identify the caller by the ringtone, thereby deciding whether to answer the call or let it go to visual voicemail.

+1
Milani has a nice 'professional' ring tone pack available.
Some of the tones are 'old school' and are nice because little chance someone else will have them :D

Sounds good _ Help a Mac newbie and tell me ( and others I'm sure ) how to use Garage band to make ringtones. iToner allows you to import songs from iTunes and make them ringtones - can you do that with Garage band - if so I wanna no - Tanks

(1) Open Garageband I know your not stupid, This is just for future readers who may be... xD

(2) Make a new project, and call it what you want the ringtone to be called

(3) drag a song into the garageband window from the Finder.

(4) press the "c" key. A little yellow strip should appear at the top of the editing window. This is how much of the song with be made into a ringtone.

(5) In the measure counter, click on the musical note and then click on "time" from the pop-up menu.

(6) Drag a small section on the bar at the top where the yellow strip is located to the desired piece of the song.

(7) Click play to hear the section you selected and then adjust it to something less than 40 seconds.

(8) Once you have what you want, click on the file menu "Share"

(9) Then click send ringtone to iTunes.

A progress bar should indicate activity and once completed, should open iTunes and show up in you "Ringtones" section.

NOTE I don't think this works with DRM Music from iTunes. But MP3s and most other standard audio formats should work (With exception of WMAs)

I hope that Helped.

Crank is my general ringtone atm but I have a number of ringtones for various family members.

When Crank loses its appeal, probably go to Schism by Tool.

I make my own ringtones. I can't stand when people use songs, especially with electric guitars, booming bass, or vocals. It just comes out as distorted noise through the tiny phone speaker, so no one can recognize what song it is, making you less individual and more like everyone else around with distorted noisy phones going off.

I don't actually hate the music ringtones, but prefer somewhat 'weird' ringtones, I don't know.... I like them. For another ringtone I have, it's One miss call (Jap version).

The ringtones from Milani is great too, it's hard to hear those these days.

Ringer - alternates b/w Crank and One Missed Call (american version)
Text - default beeps

I'm over the music ringtones. I think I've reached that stage where the sound of music emanating from my phone irks me.

Lost I have downloaded some song ringtones and I use them for various people on my contact list. this way I know who is calling and if I really want to answer the phone at that moment.

Right now for my sister I have an old Andrew sisters songs about sisters. I at one point had the funeral march. lol When I was ticked off at her

See I'm completely cool with that, I'd just never use music. I don't think I have enough good ringtones to start setting up ringer IDs for people, although I'd like to.

Maybe Milani will get around to releasing his second pack soon...

lost i think i used audiko. They have free ringtones for iphones plus they have a service to make your own. I haven't had to pay for any of my ringtones on my phone. Have fun with it. Just make a list and do a search on the website. You will be amazed at what you actually do find on there that is available.

My reasons are possibly different from a lot of people. I'm a music junkie/musician. I hate talking on the phone. I use music ringtones of songs that I really like or that I have positive connotations of because when someone calls and I hear that song it pumps me up and puts me in a good mood. So the idea is that hopefully it will make me have less of the feeling of loathing talking on the phone. :) Honestly I love when my wife calls and that solo to The Raconteurs "Level" kicks it just makes me go "Yeah!" in my head and listen to it for a few seconds before I answer. When that tone ceases to give me that reaction then it's time for a new one.

I don't mind using standard music, but vocals just sound like crap as ringtones. I like ringtone-sounding bits of music. Most recently I've used:

Jump - Van Halen (the 8 second or so theme)
Kirby's Dream Land tunes (the themes for each main area are perfectly all about 30 seconds), including the final stage, the Mt. Dedede theme (http://wiimovies.ign.com/wii/audio/article/841/841588/Music_KingDedede.mid).
