View Full Version : Apple's New $899 Product is an LED Display and Not a MacBook?
MacRumors

Based on information we've gathered it seems the $899 product that has appeared on Apple's product lists (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/10/13/macbook-and-macbook-pro-part-numbers-and-prices-899-macbook/) is likely an LED Apple Cinema Display and not a low-end MacBook.
AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/13/new_photo_reveals_macbook_pro_with_black_display_bezel.html) also confirms that new displays with a DisplayPort connector and MagSafe adapters. The rumor site also also believes the $899 product is likely a 24" Cinema Display.
This throws into doubt the remainder of the analysis for the part numbers (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/10/13/macbook-and-macbook-pro-part-numbers-and-prices-899-macbook/) that were leaked.

Pretty expensive display. I'll take a 24" display from HP for $499 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/display/display/1/storefronts/GM712AA%2523ABA), by someone who's got a proven record in the display business.

Yes, and the Dell display will be using a TN or VPVA panel. For those of us who require more colour accuracy than those give, the Cinema Displays aren't THAT expensive compared to the competition.

With all the flurry right now, I just grab my credit card and put it on a safe place.
If that really is a 'display', I personally think this will be the docking station. Maybe it is the proposed Patent setup. I always wondered, how else they would let different sized pads fit into the display.
So 899 MacBook Touch with bigger display/docking station - here I come.

No way. All MacBook models part numbers are MBXXXXLL/A and the cinema displays are MXXXXLL/A. Unless $899 dockable screen gets thrown into the MacBook product family. Also there wouldn't be just one screen, there would have to be a 30" available as well... the price points and suggested better/bests are clear to be MacBooks, MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs with the MB and MBA receiving price cuts, MBPs staying at the same price points.

A 24" display -- even including some sort of docking mechanism -- would have to include additional features if it is going to sell for $899. If it doesn't have some kind of killer functionality that is yet unknown, it would be the kind of low-volume product that is not even worth mentioning at a press event.
So let's consider some options. What else could it include to make it worth $899?
Minimal computing functionality, like a netbook for your living room (but with OS X)?
Built-in Apple TV?
Built-in HD tuner and maybe related home AV stuff, like DVD upscaling or Blu Ray playback, all at 1080P?
A home media system with touch-screen, etc, expanding on previous Apple TV/Front Row setups?

I hope you are right, I think Apple really needs to offer a well equipped $800-900 MacBook.
Plus, based on what we know so far I don't see where the new MBP's can justify the $1999/$2499/$2799 prices. We lose ports and it's safe to say we'll get only a modest bump in processor, hard drive & the new Nvidia chips. And for all of that goodness Apple keeps the same price points? That's a pretty arrogant move in this economy IMO.

Two dedicated graphics cards means some serious graphics power.
One dedicated and one integrated means dedicated when you need it and integrated when you don't thus saving power.

A new 24" Cinema Display would make sense - it's well overdue.
I've got a 24" iMac and my next purchase is probably going to be a Mac Pro with a Cinema Display - and I'd love it to have the look of the current iMac screen. It looks way better than the older styling on the current Cinema Display.
Also, it always seemed odd to me that the iMac has a 24" display and the cinema display is 23". What's with that?
Silly thing, but when I bought my iMac 24", and was tossing up with a Mac Pro instead, I couldn't really bear to buy such an expensive CD that was, nonetheless, smaller than the built-in on the iMac.

...not even close to the Apple display. The viewing angle of the Dell is horrendous at 160/170 to the Apple's 178. The Dell is worthless for serious color work with that viewing angle, plus the Apple display has a higher vertical resolution of 1200 pixels to the Dell's 1080...which is extremely valuable if you are a professional and need all you can get for palettes, menus or simply screen real estate.

1) If Apple is moving to Display Port on its notebooks, would make sense for them to sell something that connects.
2) Somewhere there's a disconnect between the originally rumored 12 price points for laptops, and the 8 price points holders mentioned in the Best Buy thread. Has anyone mentioned that in 3000 messages?

As these news articles trickle in (the new macbook pro pic and the cinema display), I'm less and less excited about tommorow.
I'm interested in the Pro line of Macbooks, own one from February and I don't mind selling mine and buying the new ones. But I'm not sure what to think of this new design and I need a mouse button, I recently went from 2 to 1, which was a smooth and exciting transition (windows to mac), but from 1 to none, I'm not so sure about that.
What really is a deal breaker for me comes down to whether the new macbook pro's have the matte option (this will be the difference between a yes and no purchase) and the price point, the MBP's are really overpriced, if they dropped them to 1800 (in Canada) which would be 1700 in the US, with that 200 dollar student discount, I could easily dish out the cash for the Pro. But if the price point remains the same, I'm not too certain.
That new pic of the MBP and those price points really have me iffy about tomorrow. I hope those prices are wrong and that the mouse button is just invisible.
And I hope the recent change in the Canadian Dollar, thanks to the US market doensn't lead to a price increase!!

I'm beginning to like it when we didn't have all these rumors and crap going around. You just went to bed and woke up the next day, waited until 10A (on the west coast) and just went from there.
Now its this theory and that theory, not that I dont enjoy it, but we're all over the map tonight.
Now we see an $899 24" display, possible docking system? Even for $899 thats still too damn high. Even a nice $499 24" display with speakers and a $200 docking station is still $200 short of the expected price. Another failed product IMO.

what would happen in terms of ventilation and wireless reception when a closed laptop is put inside a dock like this? Maybe part of the contraption would solve for these problems. This could explain for some of the cost, although doesn't really propose any interesting functionality for the customer. Just kind of essential elements for the thing to work at all. I just don't know how much of a market there would be for a laptop docking station.

this seems less and less likely/attractive; no firewire, starting at 1300? this would be an uncharacteristically regressive move. making you spend another 150 for a black macbook is one thing, making consumers spend 1300 for a macbook sans firewire is another; as a stockholder i would be very upset.

thats because they thought that the type of people who buy macs werent into gaming, but these are the same people who buy ipods and iphones and look whats happened there, the guy who made Trism made 250,000 dollars in a few months and trism wasnt even that great! theres a HUGE market for this, and think about it- macs are all about compatibility "made for ipod" and what not, or like when you buy different apple accessories how it shows a little picture of which ipods it will work for on the page, etc.
now think if they did this with games:
"Crysis"- MBP Early 2008, Late 2008
"Half Life 2"- MBP all 2007, Early 2008, Late 2008 and MacBook Late 2008
"Peggle"- MacBook late all 2007 and 2008, all MacBook Pro

this seems less and less likely/attractive; no firewire, starting at 1300? this would be an uncharacteristically regressive move. making you spend another 150 for a black macbook is one thing, making consumers spend 1300 for a macbook sans firewire is another; as a stockholder i would be very upset.
...regression... recession... depression, come on, everybodys doing it, apples gotta get in on it too!

$899 for a mac mini with bluray would make more sense than a 24" display.

Pretty expensive display. I'll take a 24" display from HP for $499 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/display/display/1/storefronts/GM712AA%2523ABA), by someone who's got a proven record in the display business.
That's a rather ignorant post. HP? Proven record? Really? IPS panels made by HP that you've used?

Hmm... if I had to guess, I would say the stock market will react harshly if Apple doesn't release a notebook below $1000 (at least $999). If I were to act solely on these rumors I'd be selling my Apple stock right now in hopes of taking advantage of the dip that would be sure to follow
But something seems missing from this picture. I cannot imagine Apple increasing the entry-level price point of their notebook computers at this point (though I disagree that they have to reduce it to remain competitive). I'm going to guess that there must be something more to the announcement tomorrow and I'll ride it out, curious to see what happens. :)
And yeah... $900 for a 24" display? There's got to be something more to it...

so apparently the spotlight is on notebooks
and a cinema display?
You'll need a nice large display for when the 15" screen just isn't enough space.
As for $900... LOL!
I just bought a 24" widescreen monitor this summer for $500, and mine has a built in HDTV tuner and plenty of connections on the back for my other home entertainment gadgets. The only thing this monitor will have on my Samsung is the LED lighting. And being incompatible with 90% of graphics cards out there if it does in fact have Display Port.

$899 for a dock?
Wouldn't sliding A MacBook into the dock generate more heat?
I wish they could make a dock without the screen. I really don't need it. When I'm at home, I prefer to use an external keyboard and mouse with my macbook. Since the MacBook has only 2 USB ports, those are taken, so I have a USB hub for those plus my printer and iPod dock.
One of my cousin has an HP laptop with the HP quickdock. I like the fact that it's one connector that has 6 USB ports, VGA / s-video / component video for an external display, ethernet port, audio ports for speakers, a power jack to charge the notebook and a power button incase you have an external display and want to turn on the notebook with the lid close.
If Apple makes a simple dock like this, I would buy it, but a $899 dock is too much.
Maybe one day, Apple will get rid of the iMac and in order to get the desktop experience, you would need to buy a MacBook and one of these display docks.

HP's have been much better that dells and apple's, The only benefit ever to using an apple display is, that it matches the mac pro, and that it has firewire inputs.
WHY oh WHY can't dell and HP act as a firewire hub in addition to the usb and memory card readers!

Can't we let these rumors go now, for goodness sake. This time tomorrow we will know everything. In fact the show begins in 12 hours and we are still creating more hype? See it's not Apple's fault it's the Apple fanboys who create all these rumors and hype, then Apple comes out and showcases their new product line which appears to be lackluster because people were expecting so much more based on the hype that the fanboys created. Enough already.

Define "better", please.
If you mean a better pixel response time, or higher dynamic contrast ratio
you're right.
But if you mean in terms of actual colour accuracy and usefulness in a creative professional setting
well, take a guess.
The Apple 30" is overpriced compared to the Dell, sure, as they both use IPS panels and the Apple has only one video input.
But the Apple 23" is a significantly better type of panel compared to the Dell 24", which also happens to suffer from some pretty nasty output lag.

As everyone else. I hope the prices before are wrong. My wife was really hoping for a cheaper MacBook (she as an aging iBook, and I'm the one with a MBP :o ) so we were really hoping for that, but 899 makes sense for a dockable display. It really goes with the dockable rumor thats floating around.
Now the entire new line will all have their ports on the left side. Just slip it in and boom a 24" iMac you can take on the road. It makes sense, but man, they better offer a cheaper MacBook than 1299, ouch....

It could be an HDTV with integrated Blue Ray/AppleTV and it also docks with a 13" Macbook pro. That might be worth 899
Apple wouldn't give you an HDTV tuner, you wouldn't have a reason to buy your currently airing TV shows off the iTMS then. ;)
...not even close to the Apple display.
Take care
Jesse Widener
Art and Structure (http://www.artandstructure.com)
If the new Apple 24" monitor is in fact 1200px tall (which at this point we don't even know if it is a monitor ) then the two displays are different aspect ratios. So you may see more pixels for pallets to fit on, but to the average home user the 24" Dell will appear larger since watching movies on it will yield a larger picture (since the Dell wont have the top/bottom letter boxing on 16:9 content and will be the same diagonal resolution).

I have a few things to say.
An $899 display is extremely expensive, but if the rumors are true, this is an LED display. $899 for a high-res LED display. That's cheap.
There is still a possibility of the $800 MacBook.
And that list of prices isn't necessarily true.
And, I am excited for tomorrow. :D

Ok... Everyone slow down - How do we know that these are US dollars? They could be pounds or australian dollars or anything. Personally I hope they are Aussie dollars. This would bean a $200 price cut for the MacBook in Australia... And would make the laptops about $900 US dollars. And this new display would be about $600.
I would easily pay $899 (Australian) for a 24" display of Apple quality and a great new slide in dock. Maybe this dock will also feature Firewire for the MB and include TV tuners or heaps of extra USB ports etc...
There would be fans to keep the laptop cool extra graphics etc...

I don't think anyone is expecting Blu-ray in an $899 MacBook... but I have no idea why you're quoting retail pricing for standalone Blu-ray players as if that was the same as OEM pricing on BD drives for notebooks.
Notebook BD drives (OEM pricing) have fallen to around $135-150 for a combo drive and $210-240 for a BD-R/RE burner (in quantity) -- which is why PC OEMs CAN put BD drives in $700 notebooks.

I read funny comments here sometimes...
900... yeah it's expensive, but if it's about a display, it's not a normal display, thus you couldn't get something better from Dell or I-have-no-idea-who-else, because they don't have these. ;)
As someone (smart) pointed out on the first page, it would be about a laptop docking station for Apple laptops. So you just plug in your laptop in the dock and the illusion is perfect : it looks like an iMac. Then when you want it back for work, just remove it and bring it with you... quite smart idea, but out of price IMO.
This would explain why optical drives on both MB and MB are located on the side now, not on the front anymore.

A 24" display -- even including some sort of docking mechanism -- would have to include additional features if it is going to sell for $899. If it doesn't have some kind of killer functionality that is yet unknown, it would be the kind of low-volume product that is not even worth mentioning at a press event.

Is funny how people are finding ways to justify apple's price on the rumored apple cinema display.
Where I work we run a 30"lcd made by dell and the apple 30" lcd.
To the guy above saying that the apple panel is of higher quality.
Please get your facts straight and don't go off by a spec sheet but by real world
experience. For you to say that the apple cinema display is better in terms of quality is just plain moronic and fanboish.
There is no reason behind apples high price on hardware that really gives you nothing= in return. I mean i purchased an HP 24" for 399.99 and when i compared it to my apple cinema display 23" guess what the HP LOOKED BETTER IN TERMS OF EVERYTHING.
AND WHAT THE HELL IS THIS DOCK B.S PEOPLE ARE RAVING ABOUT?

The great part is that there is ZERO chance that $1299 is the low-end notebook from Apple. Perhaps they have discovered a way to truly hide items from sources.

Just saying that LED's cost more, so that's why they would sell a 24" monitor for $899 when LCD ones are going for much less.
That's pretty cheap for an LED-backlit LCD monitor.

In order for something to dock into the display it would have to be a smaller form factor and much lighter than the Macbook Pro. Think of how awkward it would be otherwise. I would personally be VERY concerned about scratches.

My post will focus on the rumors around the Macbook Pro as that is what I am most interested in.
1) Macbook Pro with dual NVIDIA GPUs in an SLI configuration to drive a large display while docked.
2) Elegantly implemented multitouch trackpad with no physical buttons with new magnetic latch.
3) 24" LED based dock with a USB hub or firewire hub built into the display.
#2 has nothing to do with the dock rumor, but it is something I find interesting at the very least.
#1 and #3 could bit together quite nicely because all that graphics power isn't really necessary when dealing with such a small display.
Bring on tomorrow.. my credit card is almost empty and I need to run up the balance. :D

WHY oh WHY can't dell and HP act as a firewire hub in addition to the usb and memory card readers!
While the HP display you linked to has millions (even billions) of colors, it's $3,499!
All the $300-$500 HP and Dell 24" displays that people are talking about are 6-bits per channel TN displays, which means only 262,144 colors on screen at the same time!. If you want a "true color" IPS display with at least 8-bit per channel for 16 millions+ of colors you have to pay twice the price.
I have a 20" HP LCD. Nice monitor, but you can see the color banding on gradients, the most glaring example is Leopard's gradient windows. Note that the banding effect is much less apparent when I plug the thing in analog VGA mode (as opposed to digital DVI), but then the display is much less stable and blurrier.

its going to be like the Axiom modBook. just a tablet display - no keyboard, keyboard will be like the iPhone. case will just be a detatchable lid, magnetically held of course. bluetooth keyboard to be separate. external dock/ stand similar to current displays, with all ports. Will look like a 13" version of current imac that can be whisked off its dock for the road. apple logo at the bottom though will be replaced with a single home/ sleep button like iphone. size will be larger than macbook air, thinner than current macbook. actual macbooks will bump up to only 15inch version at current price point. new spellchecker as you type will provide list of words similar or sounds like to what you start typing. this will speed up slow typing with one hand or typing on screen to a usable speed. drawing with finger and multi touch, for accuracy (vector/ cad), and multi hand draw with one, control accuracy/ clicking with other. Macbook Air will continue as a high end 13inch with separate GPU, higher ram.

Going to aluminum on the Macbook means a price increase, not a decrease. This has been my opinion from the start, and I think we'll see that out tomorrow.
It would be a shame if they got rid of the matte option for the MBP.
And it figures that they may be releasing new displays tomorrow since I just bought two 23" ACDs just a few weeks ago. But on the other hand if the new displays are LED backlit they're probably wide gamut.
As far as Dell making cheaper monitors. Yeah, if you don't need accurate color reproduction then get that Dell. I have a 2408WFP at work and it's fair enough, but my ACDs kill it when it comes to accuracy. The reds on the Dell are absurd.

While I do think that $899 for a 24" monitor is a lot, it will likely be an H-IPS screen, which is the best screen type made. Couple that with the fact that it is LED, and it seems like a decent deal. I've been looking at a 24" HP monitor that is an S-IPS screen, and it retails for about $650-$700, and is the standard CFFL backlight.
Does anyone know if apple has an education discount on monitors?

It would have to accommodate (using the current range), 13", 15" and 17" sized machines and should be able to hold legacy machines (ie, not only just the new laptops but at least the last 2 generations of configuration (even a Powerbook 17", 15', (12"?). If it were a slot-in job, all would need a common 'interface' to click into. Unless there's some way to connect to the video port of all these machine DIRECTLY, can't see it happening...

I'm sorry. I don't buy into this $899 Cinema Display thing. Why only come out with one size? Why not 3 or 2 ?

So much ignorance in this thread regarding displays. Thankfully there were some informative posts by people who "get it", though many seem to have gone ignored.
Apple aren't a player in the display market, they offer them to compliment their pro systems so Apple can provide the full solution. They aren't aiming for everyone who needs a display to consider an Apple Cinema Display. They currently provide quality panels that offer good colour accuracy for a competitive price when compared with other professional displays.
Samsung are the only company to my knowledge who are selling LED displays at the moment with 20" for ~$700, 24" for ~$1,800 and 30" for ~$3,000. I and others have said for a long time Apple wouldn't do anything until they could offer OLED displays at competitive prices, if these rumours are true then it appears to be that time.

Maybe they don't want to offer smaller sizes and 30" is still too expensive. Or maybe this is all just relative to the $800 product rumour so we are only discussing the 24" model.

In order for something to dock into the display it would have to be a smaller form factor and much lighter than the Macbook Pro. Think of how awkward it would be otherwise. I would personally be VERY concerned about scratches.

Or the display could be thicker.

I agree that it's weird to only update one size of the monitor...it's also weird to me that they are going to leave the cheapest macbook with the current model, and have the more expensive models with the redesign. The only way I could think that this would make sense is if apple was going to release a cheap netbook, something that would be, let's say, $799 or cheaper (and would have the same white plastic design). It's just weird to have 2 different styles for the same Macbook line. Essentially what you're saying is, "If you want the new re-designs, you're going to have to spend more money to get it."

Now THAT is something I would be interested in.
What would be the point of a 24" monitor with built-in Apple TV? If it is connected to a Macintosh, you have something far more powerful than an Apple TV anyway. And if it is not connected to a Macintosh, who would want to pay $899 for a 24" TV? The display quality is wasted when it is used as a TV, a monitor at half the price works just as well _as a TV_.

Maybe the new display IS the Brick that people have been talking about. The brick allows you to dock your new Macbook Pro by inserting it into the side of the screen.

24" is nice but I think I'd get a wacom for just a little bit more

wow. i was really hoping for a tablet. let's hope that's what it is and not a display. $899 for a 24"? i have an acer that i bought for $299
There is a difference between your cheap TN LCD display and a H-IPS LED display! If you don't know why, then do some research.

If the $899 product turns out to be a display, and the cheapest new laptop is $1299, there will be a HUGE backlash from both consumers and the press.
An 899 laptop would be the perfect move in the current economy. RAISING the cost of the cheapest laptop would be business suicide. They better have a model under a grand, and it better not just be selling out what's left of the old model.
I was excited about today, but this completely turns that around.

Remember this leaked notebook case? http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/10/13/035124-mbp.jpg
Well it does have an 'additional' port at the bottom covered by some tape which would fit in with the low end 'macbook' which is rumored to be a cinema display.
There is something fishy about all of these leeks however, I reckon Apple is in on it

The unknown port is the battery status indicator....the battery will be IN the notebook, not part of its case. Itīs no port.

These prices are insane. Apple needs a drastic price cut on the lap top line up to stay relevant. They need to offer a sub $1000 15 inch laptop with with video card.
Let's hope there's more to the story.
Apple's sales go nowhere but up. Why would they need to cut prices?

Agreed. I'd happily pay $899 for a 24" LED monitor with a decent color gamut. That's actually a great price. We'll see if it happens. And if it docks my MBP on top of that then the price is a steal.
I can't believe some people actually whine that they can get an acer or HP or whatever for cheaper. By that rationale one thing can't be better than another. If ya can't tell the diff between junk and quality, go for the junk!
But some will pay more for the good stuff.

Then the EFiX Dongle for laptops and Psystar likey will come out with a laptop and they will get a big sales as well.
