Saw the post on appleinsider, so I decided to throw my neglected 1.3ghz Athlon box into the mix for team #3446. When i get my dual (upgrade the g5's apple!), ill throw that in as well.

Welcome to the MR fold ;)

Glad to have you on the team. Were you folding for a different team before?

Welcome to the team Safari! It's nice to know that we got someone from that thread on AppleInsider. I pretty sure we've gotten others, but to my knowledge you're the first to come and post!

I thought it funny the thread got hijacked from us... but folding in general has benefitted from that thread in general, and MaineRoad was the one who started it!

Again, welcome aboard, and be sure to post frequently and keep in touch!

Safari,

Welcome to the team (or into the "fold"). Thanks for throwing your hardware in with us, we're making real progress. I myself have added 3.3 ghz to the team over the past week and am churning out about 800 points a week.

If you get a chance Safari, spread the word!

All the best.

I second that MrMacman. ;) It is very frustrating when something happens unexpected and you don't have someone to ask. We are very lucky to have someone that is so patient.

Maybe this is where iChat would be very helpful?

The only thing that I'm running is Safari, Filemaker Pro, Entourage, & Quicken.
I only run Quicken every other day, and Entourage in the evening. Safari & FileMaker are the only one's that are running constantly.

Because of wanting to be helpful to the team I let my G4 do a self sleep during the day. I do put it in sleep mode at night.

Am I doing something wrong MrMacmac?

Dreadnought
Feb 10, 2004, 04:43 PM
Don'tput it to sleep, that will stop folding! Just keep your mac on constantly. Also if you have a G5 put the processor speed on maximum, not automatic. I have my dual 1.8 turned on 24/7 and almost never using it... So it's folding like crazy! Anyway, good luck and keep on folding!

wdlove
Feb 11, 2004, 10:40 AM
MrMacman have you evaluated my printout from my Terminal. Is my G4 folding properly? When should I see something listed?

Do you reccomend leaving my G4 on constantly? Does that mean that you just allow self sleep. Will that cause undue wear and tear on an almost 3 1/2 year old machine. Are there advantages to this process, besides folding? I usually keep my machine covered when not in use related to dust. Can I still cover the G4?

Yes, your G4 is Folding Properly, thought I must say that putting the machine to sleep during the day and at night will only allow you to fold verryy slowwly since folding does not work when Sleep Mode is active (because the processor doesn't run basically).

Do you reccomend leaving my G4 on constantly?
It will not harm your machine, its fine. I've left my machine on basically 24/7 no problems.

Does that mean that you just allow self sleep.
Self Sleep? Eh? As I say before any 'type of sleeping does not allow any program to run, Including FOLDING.

Will that cause undue wear and tear on an almost 3 1/2 year old machine.
Doubtful.

Are there advantages to this process, besides folding? I usually keep my machine covered when not in use related to dust. Can I still cover the G4?
Can you cover the G4?

With what?

Not the fans... that would cause overheating for sure while the machine is on...

I'm sorry MrMacman, I didn't misspell your name on purpose, it was an accident.

I'm sorry, by self sleep I meant that the Cinema Display goes dark. So I can cover the display OK. I use plastic. Is it at the lower back where I need to leave it open?

When will I be able to see results of my folding stats? The last time I looked, didn't even see my name listed.

I know I'm not MrMacMac :D but I thought I'd mention that there are several maintenance processes which will happen when the machine is constantly on.

There are daily, weekly, and monthly scripts which will be automatically run to clean out old logs and do various maintenance tasks. The system will also run indexing on your user area regularly.

You should find that you would have a little more disk space, a more organised system area, and a better tuned system to enjoy while you're awake.

MrMacman is Panther out of the box set to run as it should for continuous folding?

Today I haven't put it on sleep, but I noticed that it sounds the same. The two lights go up and down in waves. I didn't hear it making noise, normal?

So by the Mac running 24 hours the maintenance fixes a lot of problems? Is is similar to a Disk Doctor type repair?

Have you noticed if I'm on the list yet? I also wondering if I'm looking in the correct place.

MrMacMan
Feb 12, 2004, 11:17 PM
Letting your Monitor sleep or turn off is a good idea.

Saves a good deal of power.

Panther is 'out of the box' set up for folding, no necessary extra data needed.

As for the noise, are they the fans of the system? Are you sure you system has good ventilation (nothing blocking fans in back of computer)

Running the Mac during the nighttime allows maintenance to run some type of low level disk repair. Not as through as a 'Disk Doctor' like repair.

Currently the stats are down so I am unsure if you have turned in a work unit yet.

What I am going to ask you again is type work
in the terminal and hit enter and copy/paste them into a post.

Process 2 is taking 694.50 minutes per percent

This is after my G4 running constantly for 24 hours. Is it normal for the fan to run constantly? Notice that when not using the Mac the hard drive cycles quit frequently. MrMacman, I would really appreciate your input to my question on my previous post. I want to do what is best for my Mac, just want a second opinion. I went to the Stats page, tried to look at all pages and didn't find my name. Is there a finding mechanism? The colors and no definitive order makes it very difficult for me to find. I recognized a lot of the names on the list, just not mine!

Yes taking longer then expected...

Hmmm...

You can always check if folding is still running by going into Your utilities folder and go to CPU Monitor/Process Viewer and check if its running.

Running slower... yes, but if its moving a long your still good.

By now (if its running) you should be near 94% on that first processor... so very very soon, by Monday night they should both be done easily.

:D

I close all of my applications that I don't use when I am not using my computer so folding runs faster... that might just be it...

I am now running Panther. If I switch to another user, is F@H still folding in the background? Or do I need a copy of the program running on the other user's screen?

W.D. Love- I noticed you had some concerns about energy usage and wear and tear on the computer. I thought about the same thing. The only tip I can offer is to keep you modem turned off (if you have an always on connection) when a unit is nearing completion. That way, F@H will have no choice but to stop until you get online and get another work unit. At least, if you are worrying about heat, it will have a little time to cool down. Lately, I've been folding about two days. When I leave for work and it's almost done with a unit, I turn off the modem and when it completes, it has 4-8 hours before starting a new unit. I feel like I'm contradicting myself with folding. I put in all these flourecent lights, sealed off my windows in plastic four the winter and bought new more energy efficient appliances. Now, the little dent I made in the world's energy consumptions is being off-set by F@H!!! Oh well, at least it's for a good cause.

One last thing- I checked the stats, and it seems that there are nearly 100 folding teams with Apple or Mac in the name. I wonder if we could convince some of the smaller ones to disband and join us, for the common cause of getting a Mac team higher in the rankings?

bousozoku

wdlove:

It looks as though you have a few more hours, considering my earlier calculations and your latest posted percentages.

Personally, I have everything in the Energy Saver panel set to Never. I have a 3rd party LCD monitor that I shut off separately. I've never trusted sleep on Mac OS X since the various times I tried it on two machines were disastrous. Use it at your own risk.

It's probably cutting into the folding time somewhat, but I cannot determine without a detailed, prolonged analysis, which I'm loath to do. Boston is too far and too cold. :D

Obviously, at 75-77 minutes per percent, you're doing okay, but not burning a path to greatness. You'll feel better when you show up with 102.80 points from both work units.

While sleep mode is enabled Folding is not running, nor any other process.

What I don't understand is how you have 2 energy saver settings...
I have 1 setting for mac... one for monitor and one for hd spinning

I keep my mac to never sleep.
I make my monitor sleep after 2 minutes... (to save some power)
And I have the check off for hard drive spinning, it doesn't save much power... and it slows your computer.
