By leaving out the Firewire on the base Macbook, Apple has left themself enough of a gap to introduce a true 13" Macbook Pro, with Firewire and the 9600gt, for approx $1799 if they so choose.
Then, they have another baby-step between the top Macbook and the bottom Macbook Pro. The 1280x800 resolution will still turn off a lot of the Pro's who will go for the larger ones, and they get to charge a premium over the lesser Macbook because of the Firewire.
What do you think?
