apparently the 2.1 update fixes some of the some technical difficulties I'm experiencing with my 1st gen iPhone.

I pwnd it a few months ago using the pwnage tool and now it's got cydia. I really enjoy using my t-mobile sim and don't want to lose that.

Yes, if you unlocked and jailbreaked using Pwnage on any firmware 2.x, when you use the iTunes updater to update to 2.1, it will remain unlocked (but not jailbreaked).

So if you want to use Cydia apps, you should use Pwnage to jailbreak 2.1.

If you don't need to use Jailbreak / Cydia apps, then you can just let iTunes update the phone.

Mine is using the official 2.1 firmware on T-Mobile USA right now.

If you are on 1.X software you will lose unlock and jailbreak, if you are on 2.X software you will lose only jailbreak not the unlock. Also, if you restore at any time you will lose unlock/jailbreak.

Hmmm... so what do I do?
Backup the phone or something?

You should backup the phone in iTunes, yes, certainly. This will allow you to recover your SMS, iPhone settings, etc, if you lose them on update.

There's no way to back up Jailbreak content.

What firmware are you using now?

i've a Vodafone iPhone 3G.
I need to jailbreak it to install a program that i cannot find in AppStore.
What happens when comes out the new official firmware version ?
I'll loose all my unofficial content (programs, cydia, installer, etc. ) ?

If you use PwnageTool it will recognize the Unlock and there will not be modem flash, just a Jailbreak.
