I am looking for an instant message program that runs on a local network and can be run in OS X AND OS 9. This is going to be used with our Tech Crew ( 5 iBooks and a Wallstreet) on a closed airport network (no internet connection in the theater). Are there any free programs that can run this? I have tried QuickPopup and really like it but it is shareware and with the price of equipment, our budget is 0.
Thanks,
Kevin

You can run rendezvous in iChat..but that only works in os X. Sorry, I don't know of any that will work in both.

You might want to look at Adium and see if that supports local network chat. (http://www.adiumx.com/)

You might try JBuddy. I'm not sure whether it supports Java 1.1.8 but it might and they have their own protocol for use over LANs as well as a development kit.

Adium connects to the AOL server. Is there anyway to run an AIM server off a powerbook?

Use Jabber. Just setup one machine as a local jabber server. Then the rest of the clients can connect to it.

Is there a GUI version of the server software for Jabber?

Not sure, I have seen it used, and know that it works very well in office environments
