iPod touch wi-fi access in nyc

Why won't my touch access the many unlocked wi-fi networks in nyc? Or do I have to change a setting? I really thought I wouldn't have a problem getting online anywhere in nyc, but noooooo....gotta go to Starbucks or whatever. Appreciate any insight from you all.
