Hi there,

Can anyone with a new Macbook tell me what kind of CPU utilisation you get when playing 720p h264 encoded video on mkv container?

There is discussion on a different thread about GPU assistance with h264 decoding, but they seem to be concentrating on apple encoded mp4s from movie trailers.

Can anyone try running something in mkv using Quicktime+perian and also VLC? What is the CPU utilisation like? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of getting a new MBA, but want to get in before the free ipod deal ends at the end of this month so can't wait to see.

The current Airs seem to really struggle with 720p h264 because of CPU throttling issues. If there is comparatively low CPU utilisation on the 9400m Macbook, then hopefully the MBA should be the same.

um doesnt the gpu handle the processing on high def video files nowIt does in Quicktime for Apple HD trailers. If you're playing back h.264 in MKV encapsulation then you're using Perian. It's going to take some testing to figure out if the new Quicktime extensions are pushing it to the GPU or if it's brute force Perian decoding on the CPU.

about 25% using VLC player.

That said, I can't stream them over Wifi, connexion is too slow (was fine with my BlackBook)

Why resurrect a long-dead thread just to say that?
