3 days old Macbook alu 2.4 ghz 2g ram and 250 hdd japanese version bought in Ginza Store Tokyo.... this is my first mac computer (and my last) and notice from the first day of use the earphone output is noisy but very noisy.... there is no comparison possible, this is a poor quality design, i don t think that can be resolved by update. i ill bring this tomorrow for refund.
one advice don t but it if you plan to listen music, especially in university or calm home use.

I have a hissing and popping MBP. I was about to buy an MB Alu (2.4GHz). If this also has the problems I won't buy.

the worst thing that when connected on msn, each new connected friends will launch a popping sound in earphone, and start the "psssssssssss" and stop after 20s . and this for all system sound.
Only a volume control on the earphone can help but can t accept this for a new macbook and since the problem is the same for many years.
anyone with this issue, i think i am not the only one.
someone can confirm that i ve to pay 10% for refund, for a buggy computer.

They'll have to try to fix it first. If they can't then I'd say they have to accept it back. At least in the UK they would.

I find it disgusting to be honest i really do
Apple are really starting to slide of the cliff
I still need to look at the new ones in person, but im still not very satisfied with them
I think i may get the older model, or try and push my bucks towards the 17' still in the product line

FYI, I just picked up the 2.0 MB and my audio is great. No hissing through speakers or headphones.
Might just be an isolated issue.

Are the headphones high or low impedance?
This specifically shows up with low impedance headphones (see MBP thread linked above).

i agree this totally inacceptable for this product, when i asked for a japanese genius guy i explained the problem in japanese and the guy face seemed out and no complained about this, i think they are aware of this problem....
but they asked me to pay 10%... i ll try tomorrow morning with other japanese manager to avoid to pay for a defect product....
anyway apple is over for me, off course the macbook is perfect shape design but hardware is like written on the macbook "made in china" i ill buy a plastic vaio made in japan, even if there is no backlight keyboard hardware seems better.

I've bought the 2.0ghz model a few days ago, have the same 'hissing issue'. I always keep my headphones connected and the hissing is starting to annoy me now. It didn't happen on my previous Dell machine.
I'll kick fuss with Apple when I am in a bad mood :D

what kind of earphone do u use?? earbud?
off course if i use a heavy logitech headset the hissing is gone, but all the earphone i tested, panasonic and old sony reveal the issue.
no problem with speaker sounds perfect, only headphones output like previous macbook models

Depending on what model, the Vaio is a great computer. I think some of them look awesome also.
My friends new Macbook has a slight hiss and just started last night. We are in the student lounge right now together and I just asked him. He said it isn't bad and he hopes it doesn't get worse.

hogfaninga i agree, for use in lound environment or casual use, there is no problem but try to listem classic or jazz or work in librairy with earbud... all system sound launch the ”psssss" for 20 s.
i was thinking for the vaio z but more expensive...

The main trouble with the Vaio is the OS. Apple certainly have me locked in.

ok. sounds stupid, but try rubbing some oil from your nose on the headphone plug. has worked for me with brand new ipod with hissing and popping problems. must have been some sort of static problem. or something like that.

It's not the connection. It's an interference issue.

Maybe the oil helps block interference?

It's interference between components on the mainboard. You can hear the keyboard and mouse movements in the noises on the MBP, for example.
It's not an earthing issue either (on the MBP).

thanks for the heads up emotion, this stinks that these machines are doing this now as well.
I was just going to start searching about the new MB for audio issues and have read this thread ,I'm really , really disappointed ,I was going to be buying one or the other this next week.
Is there any Apple machine I could buy for trouble free audio?
I put the link for the MBP below so maybe we can find out if there is a Apple notebook suitable for audio work , I hope so 've been saving for ages and reading up on a lot of different subjects and if their is no machine for audio , I'm going to be seriously pissed off , a long time learning curve for me , all wasted :(

Its ridiculous that Apple would let this get through to the new gen of notebooks. Is it safe to assume that the Imac does NOT have this problem and that is a notebook-exclusive issue?

I had this problem on my delll XPS 1530 (on one of the audio outputs -there two on that one). For 900 dollars I can exept that (2.4 ghz, 4GB ram, 250 GB hdd, 8600 GT 256 MB)
But that's why you spend 500 dollars more for worse specs for an Apple comp, because you want QUALITY !!!!!!!!! dammit.

sad;y i got refund from Ginza store in Tokyo... the static sound annoyed me but i was ready to live with this.but another issue forced me to return it:horrible screen.
i found panasonic earphone with volume control to increase impedance, and was perfect, juste have to low the volume and increase output on mac and no popup...but reveal an inacceptable hardware issue, even eepc has better sound output and SNR.
Apple make economy on composant, and know i am sure: cheap audio design (no shield) and very cheap screen.
working and studying architectrue i use the new macbook for photoshop: the screen viewing angle is miserable, how is it possible for a pricely modern notebook to but such terrible thing. just sit down in front of the screen, if u move a little (few centimeter 2 or 3) the colors, blacks fade quickly...
about the static sound i seems that this issue is common to all apple notebook, i was thinking to get the MBA but same chipset, i think same popp and bzzzzzzz issue. can somebody confirm the issue on the MB Air?

I'm sorry, but that other thread is full of **** too. I had a 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa MacBook and the audio out was fine using 32 Ohm Sennheiser headphones and 16 Ohm headphones and earphones (both in-canal and earbuds). I had no noticeable hiss. I did, however, have the well known pop sound that appears when you don't listen to audio for a long time. This is from the audio chipset powering off when idle to save power.
I now have the new 2.0Ghz MacBook and the sound is perfect, other than the above mentioned power saving thing it does. I listen to music in absolute total silence at anywhere from 1 bar to 8 bars of volume and there is ZERO hiss and ZERO popping/cracking (again, other than the power saving thing). I can listen to iTunes for hours with ZERO abnormalities.

although it sucks for all of you people with the new macbook, my month-old white macbook does this too, and if it's happening on the new macbooks then apple is going to have to address the problem with a software update to stop the soundcard from powering down/up (I believe that's the root cause)

turn off airport!!!
EDIT: JUST KIDDING. It's popping again. SIGH.
Others have suggested zapping the PRAM on boot. This is a very well established issue on the macbook pro's:

I've had the popping (headphones only) but not the hissing. Read a post here that this is possibly the audio chipset 'sleeping' when music hasn't been played in awhile. So I tried playing a song and that seems to be exactly what was going on. I've only had my machine for 2 days now and just noticed this today so I'll need more time to play around w/ it. Otherwise the sound is flawless, quiet as a baby sleeping. :D
Mine is a Pro btw but it seems to be relevant to all notebooks.

Yes, it's caused by a (bad) design decision by Apple for saving a 10ct part

How did you come to that conclusion? My bet is just that the design is bad... but I suppose they could have left out a line filter or something...

I've read a few of your comments now and obviously you are into making music and so I thought it wise to ask you ....+ anyone else who's interested or who uses a MBP for audio .
...I'm thinking of getting the alu MBP for audio purposes ( using Serato/Ableton & a bit of messing in Logic Express with keyboard /soundcard etc) will this hiss pop affect me in these circumstances or is it just when headphones or external speakers are plugged in through the audio mini jack input ?.
cheers

Google and download "KeepSoundAwake" it will most surely get rid of the popping sound, which is the sound card turning on and off all the time to save power. It is a native Power PC app., but it will still work on an intel machine with leopard. I use it now, and no more sound popping.
