now that i'm known to all of my friends as the mac man, any time they come across some old hardware, they just give it to me... which is nice... and fun. i love playin on some of that old stuff. just so nice and simple...

Actually, I think 10.3 starts up much faster than 10.2. Apple did a good job on this, since Unix machines tend to have a longer start-up time in general.

I find it quite swift as well... much better than OSX 10.0 that took it's time... :eek: :p :p

and much faster then when OS9 was restarted after a crash and it repaired things on start-up, that was reeaaaaallllllllllyyyyyyyyy slow... :eek: :p

Agreed but in general 10.3.2 is considerably slow starting up than 10.3.1. I've used that patch that is supposed to speed up the start times but it is no where near as fast as 10.3.1. Hopefully we'll see some faster start times to come in the 10.3.3. release.

I remember throwing System 7.0.1 into an emulator once - everything was instantaneous. It made me wish Windows was that fast. Of course, now that I own a real Mac, I don't care for Windows at all :)

Hmm this sounds like it's maybe a problem with your OS install. It starts up much faster then 10.2.x for me.

The fastest starting Mac OS for me was 10.2.1. Even on clean reinstalls of the later 10.2 updates it was slower. I could get 28secs on my Dual/1GHz. That's the fastest startup time I have ever gotten on any Mac on any OS except if you go back to maybe a Mac + running 1.0. My startup time now with my Dual/1.42 and 10.3.2 is about 40secs without any patches to fix the startup caching problem. With later versions of 10.2.x it took about a minute for startup.

Unless you reboot your machine multiple times a day I would not recommend doing this. The problem is you are moving files around at the system level. If Apple were to change these files in the future then you would still be stuck with the old file that you moved which could cause a potential crash. This is of course unless you do a reinstall of the system or delete the file you copy in the steps used in the link above.

The problem is everyone measures differently. To measure I turn on automatic login and I measure from the startup chime to the moment all the desktop icons are loaded. I think right now I'm around 35secs but it hardly matters since my machine folds 24hours a day and is never off.
