Cooliris (http://new.cooliris.com/) has released a free iPhone version [App Store (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=293543764&mt=8)] of their browser plug-in that allows users to browse and search through images and video on the web. Cooliris makes finding news and search results a breeze by displaying them as an endlessly streaming 3D Wall, complementing the touch screen perfectly.

Search across Google, Flickr, Yahoo and much more. Discover News, Sports, Technology and Business - faster than ever before with the flick of a finger. These channels take advantage of location-based services to deliver regional news just for you. The 3D wall view allows you to take advantage of the iPhone's multi-touch to scroll and zoom your way around the images.

Looks sweet. I think I'll try it. If it's really great, I wonder if Apple would consider building something like this into the iPhone OS for browsing local pictures. The OS will, no doubt, evolve. It's interesting to see potential directions it could take.

It's nice, but not as impressive as the Firefox version. Doesn't seem to have very good acceleration, but maybe that will come with a later update. Potential for brilliance is there though :D

Check out the video. There's a grid of pictures on a 3D wall which moves by either tilting your phone or dragging/flicking. Tapping a picture zooms into it, and you can then zoom more with multi-touch or flick to an adjacent picture. You can search images by selecting your database (i.e. Google) and it displays your results, which you can then browse through. If you keep scrolling to the right, more pictures load.

It's free. Try it. If you don't like it, delete it.

I downloaded this when it came out 3 or 4 days ago and haven't used it much since. It does have a neat built-in browser though...nice black interface. I had it crash several times when first using it, so I've since deleted it. The coolest thing was tilting it and having the wall speed up, but then it has to download more pictures which takes to long too fill, even on my 10mbps wifi. My rating is meh.

I wonder if Apple made them do that? I also wonder if Apple will start putting restrictions on the Safari browser too. Apple knows best when it comes to what we should and should not read and look at!!

I like how can tilt the phone to go through the pictures.

NOT TRUE. I just did.

Funny how everyone's concerned about girly pics. In the case of Google, I'm sure it's just defaulted to "Moderate SafeSearch is on," so whatever you can get to show up in Google's regular image search with this on will show up here. Maybe this will be customizable with future updates.

I just read the reviews and there were an alarming number of 1-star votes because of a bug that makes the iPhone crash when trying to remove it (or something). Anyone know anything about that?

zombitronic
Oct 22, 2008, 05:55 PM
NOT TRUE. I just did.

I like the app, though, so I'm going to download it again.

Here's the follow-up.

I did uninstall it. I just held down the icon on my phone and hit the X to delete it. It worked. I ran into problems, however, when I tried to REINSTALL it.

When I went to the App Store (on my phone), the button to buy and install was greyed out and just said "Installed." I downloaded the app from iTunes and it downloaded fine, but when I tried to sync it to my phone, nothing. No indication of it trying to sync or anything. I unchecked the box under the Applications tab and synced again to "remove" it, then checked and synced it again to try to reinstall. Again, nothing. So now I can't get it back. It's a shame, I liked it. Hopefully they fix this.

So a word of warning. You CAN delete it. You just can't get it back. At least not yet.

Welcome to Apple, everyone! Boring, closed, buggy software for everyone that pays out the butt to get it!

I just barely (as in 10 minutes ago) sold my iPhone, and I'm headed to the T-Mobile store tomorrow to get a phone that I can actually USE for what I want to (ever tried to facebook chat/im somebody AND browse the web on the iPhone? good luck!)

No you have not deleted it completely. There is still something left on your phone, that's why you can't get it back. I'm stuck me too with the same issue.

I do it fine all the time ;) And its funny how when PC users see what OS X and iLife can do they pretty much crap their pants, and then I tell them that Macs have been able to do all those things for like 5 years haha.

But I guess you are right, Vista can do a lot of that, it just took them 5 years to copy it all from OS X and iLife. Microsoft is way ahead though...... in bugs. Oh wait, their software is much more expensive than Apple's too, so did you have anything to say that is actually substantiated? Welcome to being pathetic!

Hmm. That seems to fit the symptoms. I wish I could delete it completely so I could fix this. My phone has been acting a little buggy ever since I deleted this. It takes longer to sync. It took about 10-15 seconds to wake up after I took it off the charger this morning, which is usually instant.

I think this app needs an update to replace the "something left" that's still on my phone.

Yeah. FREE out the butt... And I guess Cooliris shouldn't take any responsibility for their software, either.

You've got some entitlement issues. Have fun with your new phone, though. Maybe you can get one that plays minesweeper.

I'm wondering, has everyone with problems tried to delete the app or is it still installed on your phones? I ask because I didn't notice anything wrong UNTIL I deleted it. To be fair, I had the app installed on my phone for less than an hour so there wasn't much time to analyze the effects on the rest of the phone.

My phone is still usable, and honestly, it's hard to notice anything wrong. It's just little delays with syncing and my wake up issue this morning. I've witnessed this before, as well, so I'm not sure that I can blame it entirely on this app. It still is the most direct link I can make to the issues. However, I don't think a restore would do anything for me because I did a back up after I installed (and deleted) this app.

Great App but they have some kind of built in filtering of adult content.

Go to google first and turn off the "safe search" there. At least thats how you do it in Firefox. It just uses the google cookie prefs.

Below is the answer from Cooliris about the uninstall issue :

Thanks so much for installing Cooliris on your iPhone! We sincerely apologize you are experiencing this behavior. This issue stems from a known condition in the iPhone 2.1 firmware that we are triggering through our content cache. We have been in touch with Apple closely on this, and unfortunately, we're not the only application seeing this. We're currently working on a fix that avoids this bit of code until a next version of the firmware can be released. Thanks so much for your cooperation in this process, and we'll let you know when we have the update ready. We really appreciate it!

We're happy to let you know we've just released a new version of Cooliris for iPhone that resolves the uninstall issue on Apple's firmware v.2. The new version is available at the iTunes Store and via www.cooliris.com/iphone!

If you've been following the goings on of Cooliris for iPhone for the last few days, you know about the issue with Apple's firmware v.2.1, which affected a small number of applications during the uninstall process. Fortunately, our engineers were able to figure out a workaround quickly and we were able to submit a new version to Apple. And, Apple was kind enough to expedite the approval process.

If you already have our previous version released a few days ago and want to uninstall it, please read the following instructions carefully.

Due to a bug in Apple's firmware v2.1, we do NOT recommend you delete the old Cooliris icon in the "Applications" section of the "Library" at this time. You will get a warning every time you try to sync, unless you keep the old icon in your library. If you have deleted this icon already, unfortunately, there will be no way to get rid of the sync error message unless you restore your iPhone, until Apple comes out with a fix. A few of my teammates here at Cooliris are also in the same boat as you all and are feeling a bit bummed. If you would like to be alerted when Apple has fixed this issue in its firmware, please email us at feedback@cooliris.com.

1. On the iPhone, find the Cooliris app with the old icon. This logo does NOT have the glow affect (like our new version does).
2. Press and hold the icon, and then click the 'X'.
3. When prompted, hit the "Delete" button.

Thanks, again. We apologize for any inconveniences, and hope you fully enjoy our newest version of Cooliris for iPhone.

Warmest regards,
Jenny & The Cooliris Team

Okay. I wanted the new "glowing" version and deleted the old one on the iPhone (and not in iTunes) as described by the manufacturer of Cooliris above. Then I've got the new version via iTunes. That seemed to work. Tried a sync then, but the new app didn't show up on the iPhone. Tried another sync ==> nada.

And I have two entries of "Cooliris" (with checkmarks) in my iTunes app library now. What shall I do now? Uncheck one of the two? Both? None?

Edit: Shut down the iPhone and restarted, automatic sync ==> Now the glowing icon shows up on iPhone and the app seems to work. But I still have two entries of Coloris with checkmarks in iTunes app library.

I am unclear as to if I can now delete BOTH old and new versions of this without causing my iPhone to crash and have to restore. I have new version on iPhone and both versions in iTunes Library and want to delete as I do not use it but am not sure I can without causing the uninstall issue that was causing people to have to restore before 2.2. Can I remove the 1 from iPhone & the 2 in Library???

Thanks in advance for any help that may be provided.

Preston @ Cooliris was nice enough to reply to my email I sent to them...he states now that Apple has updated to 2.2 it is safe to delete both versions without causing the synching error people were having with the first version.
Thanks for the information Preston, I appreciate the you taking the time to address my issue and provide the answer to my question.
