Alright, my swapfile has grown to a big 4.5 GB over time, and I want to just flush it all out. Is there any way I can delete the existing swapfile and create a new one?

that's highly unusual, the swapfile is designed to virtually disappear when not in use. you're sure that's what it is? if so, you should be able to simply delete it, and the system will create a new one... i don't remember where the referencing line of code is, but when you move the swapfile, you simply point it elsewhere-- the system should create a fresh one at startup.

Well, activity monitor always says I have a 4.2 GB swapfile, and it keeps on getting bigger. Its very weird.

The swapfiles are stored in /var/vm, take a look there and see how much space they're using.
