so can i take the dvd drive out of my laptop, replace the card that plugs into the back of it with the one out of my imac g3, and then run it on the mac? i dont know if they are cross-platform.

doubt it, but i have nothing to back that theory up. you can get one on ebay for 20 bucks though.
