Transfering from old mac to new mac

Hello all, I just bought the new 24" iMac and tried to move my files, info, email settings etc over from my old Mac. I used a Firewire cable and used the Migration tutorial. I'm not sure how fast the drive on the old mac takes to show up on the iMac, because it say's on the iMac "it's searching for drives". Well after 2 hours of it spinning round and round looking for my old mac I gave up. Should it take this long or longer?
