All the whiners moaning about it, I'm certainly glad Jobs and co. didn't listen to them!

That thread is awesome. People calling it Cube 2.0 and unrevolutionary and complaining about how they wanted something really special. "What - another MP3 player, just what we need" comments. How many of those people have had how many iPods and now iPhones. Talk about eating crow.

NC MacGuy, if you're running a 2001/2002 iPod, I'm sure you can find a 2001/2002 Mac or newer with Firewire. I think my iMac has it.

And I still have mine as well. But don't use it. I've upgraded a few times over the years.

ROFLMAO "It's now at the online Apple Store!

$400 for an Mp3 Player!

I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional.

Uuhh Steve, can I have a PDA now?

That old ipod is my kids "take to school, who cares if it gets stolen, I'm cool because this is truly an old school device."

Unfortunately the ipod car charger I bought in August '08 and the JBL On Stage bought in March '08 and a whole boatload of other accys. won't work with (or nominally charge) the September '08 non-firewire ipods.

That is so funny to read. So many people hated the idea and said it wouldn't sell. Where would Apple be without it?

It kind of reminds of how so many people have been with the iPhone and updates to it. The first reaction from so many is to whine about the product instead of giving it time.

Well what you really got to love about all of these people... well all the ones that i've looked up, all shut up about the subject and havent posted a reply to anything beyond 2002. All proven wrong and all put to shame :)

since the iPod, I've been glued to macrumors.com more and more

the cost of of iPod does not sound prohibitive in and of itself, but when i see it in the Apple Store online next to a $799.00 iMac, then i start saying to myself, "For twice the price, I could buy a new iMac!"

looking at it that way makes the iPod look pricey

i don't think i am the only one vascillating back and forth on this product...if it were 299.00 or less, i wouldn't feel as hesitant

How come the price of the iPod had dropped from $399 but the price of the iMac has increased from $799. I wish the iMac was still $799.

Its funny. I remember seeing that thing and saying, "I'll never own one of those, its far too expensive." I figured it would be kind of a rich businessman type device. Now there are 7 y/o kids who own them. Funny how you can be so wrong about something.

I too was a naysayer at the time, 'a $400 mp3 player, yeah right, how about a PDA?'
Well we have both in two products now in the Touch and iPhone, hooray! And Minis, then Nanos and Shuffles. And of course iTunes. Evolution is great.

I would love it if my Touch used a firewire charger instead of the USB. I wish they had left that an option even if you had to buy the cable separately. But, overall I am really happy with the direction that Apple has taken the iPod.

a direction directly attributable to Apple dropping FW in favor of USB, which though inferior in all aspects, made the iPod factory-compatible with the 90% PC market share, bringing in the R&D $$$.

When I first heard about the ipod I couldn't believe they thought they'd sell any of those without having a model compatible for Windows. I was busy buy some kind of Dell at the time. Now we all see what kind of evil genius plan this was. :D

I didn't want one because of my dislike for compressed audio, and also listening to a friends third generation iPod 15GB and thinking it sounded crap.

I stayed with CD's and a top of the line Sony personal CD player for a long time.

But now with better earphones and higher quality compression i'm all for it and use them all the time. :apple:

Funny how things change.

Is there a candle app for the iPhone? If you stick the iPhone on the cake at least wax doesn't drip.

As I recall, the release wasn't that big of a deal. It wasn't a WWDC or MacWorld event. I'm pretty sure it just came out of the blue and nobody really knew what to expect of it. I remember being really impressed that it could hold 5Gb and it was the size of a deck of cards. However, the price just blew me away.

My experience with the iPod was the sole reason for my switch to a Mac. I saw how wonderful the other side was and bought a new Mac having used one for barely minutes, relying on my experience with the iPod. I've never been happier about a single tech decision in my life.

Thank you iPod.
