At first I thought the MacOs 8 or earlier response was a joke; then I remembered my wife's lab is still running 8.6 on cubes. Don't feel too sorry for her, though--she gets 10 new G5s this summer.

hmm... with the amount of money that cubes are going for nowdays... she/employer could make a pretty penny if they wanted to.

I have switched recently from Debian Linux to Panther on my Powerbook. Only the virtual text consoles are missing......

Interesting point--I suspect their policy is just to trash them, but at $500-ish a pop, it sounds a little foolish. Ironically, her employer has a very generous hardware upgrade budget, but little or no software budget. If she could convince them to eBay these babies, she could get a pretty decent suite of software for the new machines.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think the policy is to allow employees to buy them for home use. I've noticed a fair number of her colleagues with PM 7200s and ancient powerbooks at home. But I don't think her lab will get the money :(

what monkey is running OS X 10.0.x???
there is no sane reason to do that

Well, my XP laptop just broke a week or two ago, and I've not gotten around to fixing it. So, I'm stuck running my 8yr old 6500 with OS9, and I am wowed by what it can STILL do. I can run Internet Explorer, iTunes, AIM, ICQ, IRC, and Calc, all at the same time with no major issues. IE is a little slow rendering pages, but that can be excused. Find me an 8yr old PC that can still SMOOTHLY run all that with no CPU or MoBo upgrade, and I'd be shocked. I'm definately glad I hung on to this thing.

I'm a new user of Mac OS 10.3 Panther. Just had it installed January 26th. I use Safari. So far I'm dependent on Classic for Entourage, FileMaker, & Quicken.

Actually you could try and have her convince her company to donate them to a local school. The company gets a tax write off and the school gets what are probably much needed computers. Not to mention more potential mac heads like us :-)

still using 9 (until i magically have a mac capable of running x given to me)

but it can still do a bunch... i mean, for being as old as my mac is (7 years now from date of manufacture, a bit longer since it was designed), i'm pretty happy with it. it really is amazing in retrospect how much 9 can still do - i'd still take a box running 9 over xp any day...

PowerMac G3 Blue & White at home running Mac OS X 10.3. I bought that as a poor replacement to my iBook 600 when it died out on me due to the logic board problem, but I'll be getting that resolved shortly now that Apple is taking ownership of the issue. That one was (and will be again) running Panther, as well.

Two PC's at home, both running Windows XP. Both are home built, but I'm about to replace one of them with <gasp> a Dell.

Three Intel-based laptops, one running Windows XP, one running FreeBSD, and one running Solaris x86. I also have a work laptop, which is running FreeBSD.

A Virgin Webplayer that I'm still trying to configure as a kitchen kiosk for my wife. FreeBSD.

Finally, a Sun SPARCstation 5, running Solaris. That old boy is my primary server (my B&W is secondary).

No Linux, it's pure evil. ;)

For all the Jag users bitching about Safari 1.2 being Panther-only, I sure don't see them reflected on this thread.

Come on bitchy Jag users! Your demographic is important to this poll!

I voted Panther, because it's what I run, and it kicks ass.

Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) at home - where I do most of my work, and Mac OS 8.6 at work -where I get stuff ready to take home.

Our parent company has a hatred for OS X... macs too... they are XP freaks... it's almost like they told us we could update our tech but it would be with new Dells and XP.... we'll keep our old desktop G3's., thank you very much.

I grew up in my Family with an Apple 512K running God knows what operation system, I was too young to care, but now it doesn't start past the flashing question mark, so I don't know :(

An Apple PB with the same fate, don't have it in my room, but I believe it was an 80mhz beast :)

Currently have an operational 7600-120mhz running 8.6, from their we just got the iMac-233 out of the 8.6 stone age and manage Panther on it (with a hefty RAM/HD upgrade)

Parents got sick of the 7600 and Mom got a G4 Tower running Jaguar (and knowing her, forever Jaguar),

Dad has a Jaguar PB-867 that will become Panther shortly. There is also a Toshiba laptop that my Dad is forced to drag home from work that runs XP. But I can't put it down all that much, it isn't all THAT ugly for coming from the dark side. It has a swiviling touchpad screen, pretty neato (wouldn't want to drop it though...)

And then there is me, the envy of the family with my Panther PB-1.25
That was a hard and long working summer... :D

So, I voted Panther :P

lol. Only three upgrades to this machine are: new 40GB HD (yes, running out of space sucks ass, so I had to do that a while ago), USB Card (only b/c I hate ball mice, and I wanted an optical one soooo much), and maxed out the RAM.

Other than that, the OS is basically customed designed for ME! lol. I tweaked it like freaking crazy to get every ounce out of it I could. Only real beef I have with the computer is the slow rendering of webpages in IE (netscape communicator has poor standards compliances, so pages render weird or not at all, so I don't use it), and it would be nice to have more RAM, but oh, well. I'm just glad such an old series computer still kicks at all.

Voted for Windows :(

I am running Xp but I am hoping to finally get Windows Server 2003 installed this weekend.

I know it is meant for a server and not a workstation but it's just the same thing as XP but without all the JUNK windows is famous for.

One day I will get a Mac, but until then I will have to suffer.

I'm dual booting 10.3.2 and 9.2.2. I use X more than 9, so I voted for X.

macFanDave
Feb 3, 2004, 04:10 PM
92% of the people are running some version of OS X including one poor bastard running 10.0.0 and one that was outraged that Public Beta wasn't listed. (I could have one upped him and complained about the lack of Developer Preview 4 (which I don't REALLY use), but I would just be setting myself up to be passed by users of the earlier previews.)

There's supposedly a 25 million user Mac base, but Apple recently claimed to have surpassed the 10 million user mark for OS X. This suggests that OS X should have garnered 40% of the vote and the single-digit Mac systems should have taken 60%.

This discrepancy is huge and finding out why would be interesting.

1) A lot of people have copied OS X from a friend (illegally, gasp!) so OS X really has a much larger installed base.

2) OS X users read MacRumors.com at much higher rates than OS 9 or earlier users. Users of the older systems are usually handed more and more bad news by the future trends Apple is probably taking, so they probably don't want to be bothered with it.

There are probably others, you can make them up.

One of the things about polls and statistics is to look at where the results came from. If this had been a poll taken of random Mac users, then perhaps you would get results more in line with Apples claims.

I would posit that this site gets a lot of traffic from your higher end, more experienced MacUsers. I think most of us here are all about getting the latest and greatest technology. I know for a fact my parents wouldn't have upgraded to Panther (and probably wouldn't have had much reason to) expect that I did it for them.

Us here at MacRumors are probably not representative of all Mac users and the high Panther rating surprised me a little at first. My PowerBook, my first ever Apple came with Jaguar but now I run Panther, so that's what I voted.

I never use classic mode because I have no OS 9 programs. It looks pretty creaky anyway :p. Nice to see some people using system 7 (this I did use a little in English lessons in the early to mid nineties!). One day I'd love someone to give me a vintage Mac :)

Shut up.

I am on Jag.

FileVault deleted all of my documents, movies and many other files I keep on my hard drive.

After that I said screw Panther until I can run it properly.

Maybe 10.3.3 or 10.3.4

Otherwise, I have Panther on my main system, with Jaguar/OS 9 on a dual-USB iceBook.

Voted 9 because that's my primary machine. G3 PB 333, to be upgraded to Panther as soon as I have enough time to do so (I've been incredibly busy the last couple weeks).

Also use a Cube with 10.3.2 and Classic, Performa 6400 with 8.6, Mac SE running System 7.x (don't remember what).

I've got Macs here running each system from 6 though 1.3, from LC through Beige G3.
The "wierdest" one is an LCIII that boots from a RAM disk and is my LocalTalk/EtherTalk bridge so I can use my Laserwriter under OS X.

Honestly, I think the introduction of OS X has been Apple's most significant contribution to the industry since the Mac was introduced. It offers the best user experience of any platform, period. I use Linux, but it doesn't offer the same compatibility of the Mac. Windows? Forget it. I use it all the time at work, and just when I start to think it's not so bad, Microsoft proves me wrong. It crashes, it has weird GUI glitches, and intermittently slows down even on a fresh install on a new computer. I've never experienced any of these things on OS X. Not a single crash or slowdown. Wonderfully consistent. For all you Mac OS 9 users out there--upgrade! In my opinion, it's worth the cost of new hardware.

Wow. Now that I think about it I have a computer each with 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, and 10.x. I'm too young to remember using the older OS's though. OS 8 and System 7 work fine but aren't in use. I'm too young to remember anything before 7.

I admit I have bought ONE copy of Panther and installed it on my THREE Macs.. but as far as i see it, i've slapped a big wd of cash for their hardware and its almost my right.
