Probably a dumb question, but I am looking to change over to Mac and was wondering if Office is shipped with the Mac or do I have to buy it then install?

If it doesn't come with the Mac, how do I make word documents, etc?

Thanks!
And sorry if its a dumb question :p

Not even worth it to bother with Office unless you're a power user who needs every little thing.

Neo Office (http://www.neooffice.org) offers about 90-95% of the functionality of Office in a FREE Opensource package! Rockin'!

Not quite sure of the prices but for a student in the UK it is actually cheaper in some instances to buy an OEM copy of Vista and get the Ultimate package of Office 2007 from Microsoft, which is a vastly superior programme to the 2008 Mac version.

While Mac do not ship with Office, a program called TextEdit is included. It's a lightweight word processor that can read and write Word files.

Do Macs still ship with a 30 day Microsoft Office and iWork trial? Anyway if they don't, I also recommend downloading NeoOffice. It does everything Office and iWork can, and it's for free!

I think I'm going to have to get Office anyway for all my school work.

You might consider trying the free demo if iWork '08. It's an excellent suite of programs and much cheaper than Office. -GDF

NeoOffice (as mentioned above) is generally compatible with MS Office, apart from some minor formatting issues, so unless you need the really advanced features, I wouldn't bother getting the MS version.

Thanks for all the replies.
I think when I get a Mac, I won't bother with Office until I try the other programs people have mentioned - NeoOffce, TextEdit etc.
Then, if I think I really need office, I will get it.
