There are all these cds my friend has that are copies, problem is dont know if they are DIRECT COPIES that is to say they werent compressed and reburned. I dont want to rip at 160 aac if they were ripped at some point at 128 mp3 and put back on a cd. Is there any way to tell beyond trying to listen?

Maybe you should go pay for some of your music?

well then don't rip them, import them uncompressed, then burn from there. you won't be putting them through a codec, assuming you can live with the high file size (you'll probably want to delete them after you burn the CD, these files are big)
