With the prices of the 1st Generation MacBook Air dropping to the $1000-$1100 range I am thinking about picking one up, I have read about the fan issues, and some poor performance, is it likely I will have any issues, viewing Itunes video files, such as MPEG4-Movie or video files is the processor OK for this and what about the battery life, I have no use for a DVD drive, everything is ripped inti Itunes, I was just wondering if this was an area that the performance my effect, I don't want to wait and spend $600 more for the 2nd Generation

I watch high def mkv movies using VLC without issue.
Despite what you read here, there are many MBA's out there that don't overheat. Mine hasn't had a single issue.

You should be alright. No core shutdowns with my MBA and I've been running all six of the Star Wars mpeg4 this week from my iTunes Library without issue...

Always remember those who post usually are the ones who have problems, I have never seen an MBA with core issues and I've owned 3 in the past 5 months. That's not saying they're out there, it's just a certain group of people.

Mind if I ask where you found that price? I've been thinking about getting a 1st Gen MBA and the best price (new) I've found is $1,299.

iTunes and quicktime video playback gets the processor usage and heat up fairly good after a while (30 minutes+). VLC uses much less resources, so processor use and heat are hardly an issue when using VLC, so I tend to use VLC most of the time.

I've had an 80Gb for about 6 weeks.
It is fine for all uses I have thrown at it, my only grumble is the fans start to blow hard when viewing even a short youtube/streaming video clip.
I watched an entire movie on a flight today using VLC with no problems. Same with iTunes. But after a few minutes of youtube (or other streaming media) the fans go crazy...
I would love to hear a technical explanation for this. What is so challenging about streaming youtube compared to viewing on VLC or iTunes from hard drive??
I am hoping that the next generation will be better in this respect.
Hooly.

Should be fine, they're only 720p so it shouldn't strain it too hard at all.
