My hope is that there is a crate on it's way to Amazon. But I feel Apple will make them wait until mid-November.

Well, If others start to report then the stores will be getting them soon.
As I recall, Apple ships the online orders at the same time they begin shipping to stores. (a good arrangement)
Amazon is going to wait I would think.

I ordered 10 mins later than you and nothing good yet for me (still says the 5th for shipping). I'm in the UK though. Fingers crossed because I'm not sure I can stand the wait until the Apple estimate of the 12th!

woohoo! i'll be on my way to the apple store to play with them in a few days now! I wonder if they can run any 3d games at decent framerates on the underclocked gpus. even at mid to low settings, i'd say that's a pretty great achievement for a notebook thinner than my finger.

From what people say around with new MBs and MBPs is that they run much cooler.
That will be the great advantage for the MBA.

Would I usually get a MBA in my hands faster if I bought it from an Apple Store (Manhattan) or ordered it online today? About how much slower do online stores like MacMall get it in stock? I'm trying to determine if I should pay more to get it a few days sooner from Apple, but I might not do so if it's only a matter of a couple of days delay from a reseller.

I'll be curious to hear if the MagSafe connector is still on the left side or not. On the upgraded MBP and MB, all the ports are now on one side (left) of the computer.
I ask because I was very interested in the new 24" monitor and was wondering if the MagSafe cable will be long enough to reach around to the left if the DisplayPort and USB are still on the right.
Any thoughts?

People keep talking about netbooks... So, I am asking...
What is better a MBAir or a $300 netbook?
I am looking for something small (and rugged enough) to slip into a camera bag to offload pictures when I am on long vacations [1 week or more] (until I can store them permantely) - I tend to take over 100 pictures a day; depending on where I am at. Also, something to check the internet and email while I am out [although I do have a smart phone already]; and something to work on say Office/iwork and CP notebook or Onenote when I am away.
I spent over $2000 (with applecare) on my macbook setup. I hate to travel with it, as everone knows how bags get bumped around. I am looking for something small, that I can just shove in a bag and go.
Does this upgrade really make considering an Air better than a cheapo netbok running XP? I am not taking the vista plung unless I had too.
really, all I need is USB ports and a power cord. This would just be an add on / travel device for me as my macbook is my main computer.
Can anyone tell I cannot wait unil a small to midsized tablet comes out that has large storage capabilities (ie a 100gb or higher drive), and a bunch of USB ports. A dock would be nice, but I would settle for the old USB jump/drive or my external lightscribe burner if I had to...

If Macmall has it in stock, they usually ship it out the same day if you get your order in early enough in the day. I ordered my macbook, it shipped that day and was at the Fedex hub next day. Because I ordered 2-day shipping, fedex held it one day on me , but that is a beef with Fedex.
the Apple store only has the baseline of each model. Memory upgrades can be done inhouse, anything more than that they will order for you through the apple store.
Macmall does not charge sales tax btw and are usually a little cheaper than directly through apple with quicker shipping options (if in stock). I would use them again for my next purchase.

I would have to say Netbook in your case. Those things are really meant to be complements to your full setup and that's exactly what you need, a 2nd computer for basic needs. The smaller footprint of the Netbooks also make them more suitable for just throwing into a bag. The MBA is thin, but it still takes up a lot of space because of the 13.3-inch screen.

I kinda figured I would get a reply like that and that would be the case.... I just love OSX over windows, but for basic needs - I quess netbook is the way to go..
Can anyone suggest one? most I have seen had reviews about being super slow or breaking easy... No one local to me sells them, so I would have to order online; and I am one who would rather play or see something before I buy.
Are there any touch/tablet style?
If I had too (which I really would not want to), I would maybe consider something running vista so that I could make use of it like a journal for taking notes while I am out (just scribble on the screen). this is not a priority, just handy. Or if it could run the livescribe desktop - then I would just get a journal for my pulse pen and upload my pen to the netbook.

Hi All, long term lurker, first time posting. Anyway I'm trying to decide between a MB and a MBA. Work has told me to choose a laptop and I'd either go with the 1.86 MBA or the 2.4 MB upgraded to the 4G RAM and the SSHD.
I really have no need for an optical drive, and dont care that much about the other ports, and I usually bike or walk to work so the lesser weight of the MBA would be good, on the other hand the extra processing power and new trackpad on the MB would be nice. Most of the work on it will be surfing the internet, SSHing into remote servers, and giving presentations. Any suggestions?

I'm in the exact same situation as you and opted for the MBA. I'm willing to shell out the extra $$ for the thing and light design, although the deciding factor for me was the NVIDIA 9400M. Also, It'll basically have the same perfomance as the Macbook given its larger 6MB L2 Cache. The macbook only has 3! Oh and it's definitely snappier than a macbook with the SSD option!
I really don't care much for the optical drive.. I haven't used mine in the MBP for a couple of months..

I thought the MB and MBA had the same chipset (the 9400) besides the large Cache? Does the cashe make a huge difference? Also why would the MBA with the SSHD be "snappier" (a favorite word around here huh?) then the MB with the SSHD?

Well, keep in mind that the 9400m on the air is under-clocked for heat dissipation reasons(according to Lord Steve on the keynote), so don't expect the same performance improvements seen on the macbook(graphics-wise)

They do have the same chipset.. But, cache makes the system more responsive..
And also, SSD allows for a 20 second boot time and about half the time it normally takes to load up an application. Copying, however, is the same if not slower.

Well i was playing with one of the first gen airs today in apple store the 1.6 model to be exact. I opened all of the apps i would normally use (safari, mail, address book, itunes, ical and iphoto) and just messed about to see how responsive it was. It was more than adequate when flicking between applications and surfing (3 safari windows open) while listening to itunes and editing and retouching a photo in iphoto.
Maybe its not as fast as the new macbooks but for what i would use it for it was well worth the money. My only decision now is to shell out for a second gen or get a refurb first gen
Oh and i think its much the better looker and the screen is superior too

Interesting how in the past the whiners had everything to complain about the MBA and how it would never sell. From the postings on this thread, sounds like the MBA is doing quite well and there is a good fan-base.
I bought my MBA in July and absolutely love it. I had to buy one when my old Sony finally burned up. I honestly tried to hold out until just this kind of revision was introduced by Apple but could not afford the downtime.
While I would sincerely love the changes to the graphics system, I have no complaints about my current MBA. Hopefully, Apple will introduce an MBA down the road with 4GB of RAM. That would help with my VMware XP performance. Will be interesting what the 3rd generation would be like. I will probably upgrade then.
Keep up the good work!

It figures that I was just logging in to cancel my order for the Air and it is PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT. I just pre-ordered a few days ago. I have an original Air that I am selling, and bought a Macbook from apple.com to replace it with. The screen sucked on the Macbook so I got the local Apple store to take it back without a restocking fee if I upgraded to the Pro. So I did. But I haven't opened the Pro yet because I have had reservations about the size compared to the Air. I have the 1.86 / 128SSD on order for the Air and have a 2.53 Pro sitting here unopened in the box. I could only get 2-Day shipping for some reason when I pre-ordered so hopefully it shows up Friday, but I still won't know which one I want to keep. My plan was to just get the Air in store if I decided to keep it rather than the Pro. I use my current Air for web browsing, watching movies, streaming Slingbox, iTunes, live concert downloading (torrents), document creation and some minor photoshop...I usually bring it to work, my girlfriend's, friend's houses and what not. I leave it in the car most other times if I am out and about, I don't carry it around all the time. I have a custom built PC for home, Intel Q9450, Vista 64-Bit, 4GB RAM and a Dell XPS M1710 for work. The XPS never leaves work anymore to say the least, too big and heavy...

Man... this is so close to the perfect portable... I just wish it had a dedicated GigE and FW800 port... They could even use the special version of firewire that can run through the ethernet port.. That and a higher resolution screen!

I kinda figured I would get a reply like that and that would be the case.... I just love OSX over windows, but for basic needs - I quess netbook is the way to go..
Can anyone suggest one?
Go for MSI Wind. It is perfect for installing hacked OSX. Now you beat two flies in one ;)

Thanks.
I definitely think the 2nd gen improvements are worth the difference, especially for graphics...could anyone give me a short summary of the MAIN differences between the MB and the MBA, including size and weight?
c'mon. you know how to google but here is a headstart: www.everymac.com

I'd probably go with the Lenovo IdeaPad S10. The IdeaPad even has an expresscard slot, although in the US it only ships with a 3-cell battery, while in other countries a 6 cell is offered. As a previous owner of a MBA, I don't think they are rugged enough to just "throw it in your bag". The hinges can be broken rather easily and I'd rather not have to worry about a $1500+ notebook. Besides, the footprint is rather large compared to a netbook. The netbooks are smaller and the keyboards need getting used to. The MBA won't have that problem, great screen, great keyboard, but expensive.
Most netbooks can be made in to Hackintoshes depending on your level of willingness to swap some parts (Wifi Card on MSI Wind) and your comfort of navigating through terminal. MSI Wind, Dell Mini 9, and Lenovo IdeaPad S10 seen quite popular. I'll probably hold out and see if someone makes a reasonably priced netbook using the Atom 330 dual core instead of the single-cores used today.

The macbook air is a glimpse of what the all laptops will be like in the future. With usb drives becoming larger and cheaper by the month i cant wait till we get rid of the ageing CD.

Can someone give me a short comparative summary in this thread? I worked a lot today and am really lazy to look for it myself... :D
Edit: found it on Apple's site, thanks! ;)

I will run everything and post back with the results. I have rescheduled my appointments for Monday so I can get everything up and running.
I am upgrading from a 1.8 SSD Ver. 1, to the 1.86 SSD Ver. 2. This will be very interesting. The thought of running Half Life 2 on the Air makes my pants tingle. :D

Same here. What is this issue all of you are talking about? I've ignored the AIR until now.. (which btw, says 'Prepared for shipment')..
Is this a heating problem you guys are talking about? Any forums you might want to point us to?

i forgot the command so i just said the "yes dev null thing".
just now i searched the forum and found the correct command.
you run terminal, and then type yes > /dev /null and enter, and then you open new tab in the terminal, and type that again and enter.
those commands will use 100% cpu and make the system works hard so it will get hot.
that command is often used for testing purposes of the macbook air.. if it can run for hours without the machine slowing down then it's good and doesn't have the heat problem unlike the majority of us have.

sweet! or better try playing half-life 2 for a hour or two, and please please please it will not get overheat and starts slowing down. i just can pray, but i believe that apple has fixed the heat issue in this second revision since they use the 45nm processor which uses only 17 watts compared to the previous custom made santa-rosa chip which uses 20 watts.
does the 3 watts difference makes so much? i don't know, anyone can explain with statistic for watts vs temp of these chips will be much appreciated.
thanks..

The 17w and 20w are typically TDP and maximum power consumption. And yes, 3w can make quite a difference. What is not provided is the thermal profile. At 20% utilization the older 65nm chip could be at 7watts, but the new chip at 3w, and so on. So 3w doesn't seem like a big deal, I suspect much like the desktop chips that moved from 65nm to 45nm that the power savings and heat dissipation was quite a bit lower, even at idle. However, the bump up in FSB (800 vs 1066) usually comes with more heat. Maybe two steps forward, two steps back...
I'd be more interested in how the new nVidia integrated graphics and Snow Leopard improvements performance over Rev A's X3100 graphics.

thanks for the helpful explanation, but i'm more concerned about the heat rather than the computing improvement since the current generation of MBA has heat issue that makes the computer not running on its full capacity.
i'm afraid the bumped up FSB might actually adds heat even with the lower 45nm cpu, it's still give the heat just like the current MBA, so if there is the same heat exists in the next gen MBA plus the more capable graphic which is adding more heat than the previous under powered X3100 (in a logical way of thinking that the less-powered X3100 chip must be cooler in comparison with the new much powerful 9400M). then i'm afraid we're doomed! same heat like the current MBA plus more heat from 9400M!.
unless NVIDIA is making a great manufacturing process which makes the 9400M much more powerful than the X3100 but lower in temperature than the intel one.
oh boy, all i can do is pray.
