How would this work on the iPhone? Can the GPS actually tell what direction you are pointing the phone? It seems unlikely since it usually shows me as being about 15 to 40 feet north of where I actually am.

The compass can tell you which direction you are going. I've tried most of them and none is optimal. I find gpsCompass getting better with every release; there are also different styles of the compass to choose from. It's also relatively inexpensive. Compass Go looked good in theory but needs a lot of work. I also like the compass on GPSCockpit, but it's small. I still have to try GPS Cardinal but it seems redundant given that I have gpsCompass.
