Why do my external speakers sound so crappy on my new MB?

Granted, these speakers I'm using aren't top of the line or anything, but on my other laptop, they sounded very good. I think it was because I could adjust surround sound and other features like that.

Is there a program where I can do this on my new MacBook? The settings seem very limited to me.
