updating new Parallels build

I just installed Parallels and have no internet connection. Parallels is telling me that I need to download a new build, that the version I have is out dated and that's why there is no internet. (even though I just purchased it at staples).I'm really scared to download new build because of my business software I'm running in Xp. I have no way to back up my work because my XP doesn't recognize my CD drive.

If I download new build is my Xp safe?
