Fooling around with the S1 and came up with this. No post-processing, just resizing :) (sorry, I still hate post-processing, unless I really have to. I'll keep taking the same shot until I like the way it comes out.)

rrrr, sorry about those two little hairs under the left pen. Guess I really WILL have to Photoshop 'em

so why do you choose digital photography is you hate post processing? you're not one of those people that use the media cards to print their photos are you???

why not just use a polaroid? ;)

No, not at all. I just like to try and take pictures that are perfect right out of the camera. I'm also lazy as all get-out and don't want to spend time tweaking things. If I can take 4-5 pics and get one that comes out just right, or take 1 and spend 30 minutes futzing around with it, I'll take the former any day.

I don't know enough girls to justify getting a Polaroid. That IS what they're for, right??

That pen photo is looking sweet. You normally don't need 30 minutes of Post in photoshop... I generally can get by on adjusting colors slightly... maybe do some levels adjustments and hit the color casts. Takes about a minute per image. That and a little unsharp mask to sharpen it up.

Your pen looks really good though, very professional and clean. You should get used to playing just a tiny bit in PS. It can actually be fun. Though I feel you on "getting it right" in camera...

I made it into the Fred Miranda Finalists. Check out the entries this week and give a vote. You do have to be registered though...but it's a nice compliment to our photo threads. (http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/viewtopic.php?TopicID=74948)

Here goes...firstly if you have a newer PB with a native res of 1280x854 you can download desktops I've been making for my site...if you want them get them now 'cause they're not all going to be there long!

BTW does anyone know how to turn smooth scrolling off of Safari? It's soooo slow to speed up....I want it to remain constant...when using an external mouse I had to speed up the scroll wheel which obviously makes using it in other apps difficult!

http://www.theforce.net/theater/shortfilms/troops/ Check that out it's pretty funny! At least the part I've seen :D

This is from the Gasparilla Night Parade...it's hard to believe that no one knows about it anywhere else since it's a huge event here but anyway if you've heard of Ybor this is the infamous party that happens every year...there are three parades:

children's parade (people take children, drunk: minimal)
day parade (everyone goes, drunk:medium-high)
night parade (a whole lot of people go, drunk:so high that you just need to be there to get drunk!)

This was one of the floats...we think that's a hot air baloon "engine"....it was a new idea for this year methinks...argh it was 104k....if the quality is low, sorry, didn't feel like finding and shrinking the original again (the rain is now a drizzle and I'm ready to leave...actually it's a Tampa drizzle which is just plain rain everywhere else...)...

Let's try this again! Maybe it reset after I tried the last time and it didn't fit, though it's never done that before....

Yeah, it looked crappy but what're you gonna do?

Anyway there were 2-3 people breakdancing in Centro [Ybor] and I got a shot off while the guy was spinning on his hand...he did some really cool handstands where he bent really far back with his legs, getting them about a foot or two off the ground....really cool...I could do it with practice if my wrist weren't still messed up!

MacBandit, yeah I really wish my powerbook had a larger native resolution....oh well....don't worry, when I actually get to it, I'm going to make desktops for most common sizes, like 1600x1200, 1280x960 (and 1280x854 obviously), and 1024x768....probably skip the 800x600 and under crowd though....I'm glad you enjoy them...I'll let you know when I get around to making some at that resolution....which ones did you like better? The ones with the plant were easy to make but the other ones will be pretty hard to redo at a larger resolution...still have the .psd's methinks so it wouldn't be TOO hard :D

My favorite ones are of the river. The plant is a close second and I don't like the collage of the woman at all. I'm not fond of collages. If I'm going to have a portrait of someone on my desktop I like it to be clean with some gradients and maybe a some lightning/tearing effects thrown in to jazz it up and the person on one side kind of as a border on the screen.

The woman was on there briefly...it annoyed my girlfriend methinks :D....I had considered making it more like you said as I don't really like collages either but they were web images and thus too small (right now I wish I had an undo function as this accidentlt got erased once :))....the first river one is somewhat of a collage too, actually....the .psd file contains many of the images I've shown here :) I was hoping you'd like the river ones as they would be easier to remake, although it still won't be anything exactly like the original only a different size...it'll be fairly different...

While not all that artsy, I found this one to be one of the better shots I grabbed. It's for a fashion article, and this was designed by an internationally reknowned designer who lives here in New Orleans. He actually had some designs prepared for the Oscars last night. ;)

i couldn't find an option for not viewing thumbs first. but, to get around it, all we have to do is use the image tag and host the image elsewhere. only attachments are turned into thumbs. my guess is that arn wants to save some bandwidth.

I concur! I especially like the one of the drops hitting the wood and leaving circles....so you guys just got your first storm? Ha! we just finished a week of storms...it still pretty overcatse during the day, I'll post shots of it tomorrow...tonight the only holes in the sky looked like aerial views of a hurricane! It was clear enough the other day for us to see Jupiter and it's moons through my friend's dad's telescope....funny thing that other day....we dressed a Jedi for our friend's birthday and took him horseback riding and I lost my damn glasses...and I likd them too!...anyway I accidently gave away that we were going to a casino later in the night by saying maybe I'll win my money back for the glasses....sure enough after loosing about 18 dollars in the slots I got 900 credits @ 25cents per credit = $225.....so I was pretty happy! I so almost didn't keep playing after I had $4.93 left of a twenty....my original limit was $10 but the night was young, it was the only bill I had, I figured I'd only be there once in a long while, and I didn't want to be bored sitting around doing nothing so we tried random machines...the light on my winning machine was flashing and a bell was ringing and I was shaking the hell out of my friend! I didn't even notice 900 credits, I just kept watching the money go up and up and up! I thought it's stop at like 30 or 50...boy was I wrong! I had my camera in my pocket and didn't think to take a picture of the event but I have a picture of the machine which I'll also try to post tomorrow...got to think if I had only bet the max :) (it was 1.25 already...well 25cents with a minum bet of 5 credits...)

Nice shooting. Did u rely on natural lighting?

yeah, i just used my good old S45 Compact. Prolly looked unprofessional, but it came out well. The shadows on the b&w one are great, i had the guy stand in the shade of a tree. i feel like i gave him hair in each pict.

there was more contrast in the printed version. you could actually read the text on the right.

As for lighting, I sooo much prefer to have it natural if possible. There's been too many cases where I used the natural lighting and got much favorable results than I could have otherwise.

I've enjoyed many of the posted photos and wanted to show something I've been enjoying recently--applying color to some very old ancestal photos. There is everything from fairly recent snap shots to cardboard mounted 4x4 b&w photos, tintypes, and a few emulsions on glass plates. This "people at lake" is one of my favorite scans, tinted (slowly) in Photoshop Elements 2.
I hope this departure from showing strictly your photos is enjoyed and maybe someone else is interested in this technique.

So I gotta jump into it here a little.

I recently purchased a new lens for my camera rig, Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro. This thing is pretty damned sharp, and FAST I tell u.

Anyway, here's a few samples from it.

What camera is your Nikon 60 mm macro attached to? Nice shot and just the right depth of field; how so sculptors do the eyes that well complete with little peripheral iris ring.

Thanks. I honestly love shooting in cemeteries though. I have my favorites, and I make it a point to venture into them whenever I can. I do it as a sort of way to refresh myself when I feel uninspired or just need to get back to my "roots," perse.

To answer your question, yes the dead are buried above ground here in New Orleans. This practice was started years ago before our drainage systems were in place, as our below sea level elevation caused bodies to resurface & float away during rain floods.

The people don't bother me really, it's a very common thing to see a photographer perusing a cemetery. ;)

Wardofsky,

there is almost a complete pastel color palette in the leaves--very subtle and I'm sure was difficult to expose correctly to capture it. That is not only pleasant to see but also worth saving to be able to harvest colors with the eyedropper tool!

Mind you, this is from the older digital camera which didn't have the sharpness but was perfectly adequate for being 4 years old.

i did some concepts for a wrestling website a while ago... though i find wrestling a bit weird. i had to try not to give it that 'homo-erotic' feel. the guy on guy action positions are hard to design with. if it doesn't look angry or it just looks gay; or maybe it's just me. ?

I have avoided shooting certain moves. I believe that the wrestler's dignity comes first. Until that shot, the wrestler in the gold singlet had never seen a photo of himself where his butt wasn't the predominant image. Too many of the photographers I've seen know how to shoot well, but they don't know wrestling at all and it leads to some unfortunate and embarrassing shots that the wrestlers don't want to remember.

My old digital was an Olympus C-2500L, 2.5 MP, 3x zoom for $1800 although I got it at Best Buy in 2000 (imagine that!) for an open box price of $850 nine months after its release. My new camera is an Olympus E-1, which was $1800 for the body only.

It's 1.5x, which can pose problems at times, but isn't too bad. I'm hoping, that whenever chips & dslr systems are finally evened out to their 35mm counterparts, that I'll have made the right decisions in my lens choices. My next purchase is going to be a Sigma 12-24mm super wide. :D

[QUOTE=cr2sh ... aerial photos of the barringer crater. [/QUOTE]

Nice photo of that crater and an interesting web site about it. West of El Paso there is a large sink hole called Kilburn Hole, formed from collapse of a gas bubble. It's not quite as large as Barringer. Years ago cattle rustlers would drive cattle down into it, disappearing from sight until it was safe to come out. Now it's a great place for rattlesnakes. Check it out on your way back--it's right under the airway west of ELP.

how did u do the raindrop color effect

If you're talking about mine, I got the original picture, extracted the grayscale picture by showing the separate red, green, and blue channels, and picking which one best fits my needs. I copied the grayscale layer, pasted it on top of my color image, and adjusted the curves to get the desired effect. I then took an eraser, and erased on the grayscale image where I wanted the color to be. Nothing too complex.

That is actually way more complex than it had to be! All you had to do was duplicate the layer then Desaturate/Channel Mix the top layer and erase. I'm not even sure how you did what you did. Did you copy one of the channels to the layer palette? That's what it seems like you did....Channel Mixer would have been more effective but still the pic was pretty cool...

I'm not too familiar with photoshop, but I did what I could with what I knew. Now that I think about it, what you said does make sense... Don't worry about it...I just thought that would seem a more likely way to do it....that's the wonderful thing about Photoshop! You can something many different ways! Some ways offer more control (my method here would involve more control if you used Channel Mixer) some offer faster product, while some ways are just easier for some people to do or understand. The coolest thing is that each person optimizes themselves for Photoshop, and each person's way is the correct way for them! I know I can shut up now 'cause I'm sure you're catching my drift!

It's a gradual thing but because of the atmospheric disturbance the shuttle itself is causing, gradual is somewhat more accelerated than you might think normally. Combine the disturbance with the flight path and the normal winds and the trail does tricks. :) It's completely gone in a few more minutes and so are all the people on my street who were watching.

G'day peoples, just got back from an 8 day camp in the country with a lot of sailing and kayaking.

I took a little disposable camera with me so I'll get the film out soon, it was really fun to shoot on something so simple when compared to using a full on DSLR, I have to say everyone should buy a disp' camera and take some shots, we could have a little comp.

I decided to keep the camera and just take the film out, so I snapped open the case, took out the film and modified so that you push a little wire and the flash will go off.

How about the general use Kodak 35 Funsaver... according to the kodak page its almost 80% recyclable... :)

http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=2/3/9/1026/1050&pq-locale=en_US

Sounds good to me, if that's what we decide, I'll pick one up from work tomorrow...

We could have like 5 themes and then you use all of your 24 shots to their effectiveness....one of the five themes could be 'whatever you feel like'...:)

I'm glad to see the disposable camera comp kicking off.
I set up a quick site: http://www.wardofsky.com/dispose if we do go ahead.

In terms of cameras I liked the Agfa Le Box http://www.agfa.com/photo/products/fwl/

You can reload it yourself if you know how...

I haven't seen an Agfa camera in the states....I think we should stick to the Kodak funsaver 35...

I say we keep it as simple as possible.
35mm Disposable B&W or colour (we might seperate them tho)...

I missed the reply email :( Oh well, I'll get whatever we decide tomorrow...I'll probably end up working on Sunday anyway so I'll have a chance to get it then...I say we go with something kodak or fuji....fuji makes great films and kodak is usually ok....they're both fairly good....

I'd probably prefer fuji, but this doesn't really matter all that much, so whatever....

I don't mind the Kodak Funsaver 35, but whatever....you guys decide :) I need some sleep, it's 4:14 AM here...but hey, I've only been up since 5:23 PM :(

Disposables? They're too good. :D

I'd like to see how you all do with one of these:

http://members.aol.com/Chuck02178/27.htm

I started photography on a camera like the one on the left. It uses 620 black and white roll film and produces 2.25 inch prints--I think the negative is 2 inches. I suppose it's not too bad if you've dealt with a medium format camera but the viewfinder gives you the image at the top of the camera and the image is upside down.

Needless to say, I don't use it anymore.

neut, your shots are still amazing, I love 'em...<snip> have to say everyone should buy a disp' camera and take some shots, we could have a little comp.

thanks.

ok, someone make a decision. what camera? what film? i got all next week to work on it, (helps being an unemployed bum) ;)

and- to continue my dinner theme. last night i grilled shrimp on the barbi. (sp?)

the attachment is charcoal starting. it is more than one pict. most heavily photoshopped pict i have posted. (but less than a neut pict :) )

just shows how we each have our thing.

erm, hi :) first post here after lurking around for a few weeks
hope I got the attachment working and everything

this pic was taken with a 35mm slr, with 400 iso film, bumped up to 3200 (camera won't actually go that high, had to work out sutter speeds myself) then the negitive was contact printed and scanned (the scratches and dust are from the scanner glass) then messed about with in photoshop to up the contrast and emphasize the scratches, and then tinted blue, just 'cause it looks cooler that way

Welcome, MatMistake!

That is a neat picture--there are dynamic things going on in it, made dramatic by the techniques you used. That could be used for a thematic appreciation test by a shrink. "And what do you think of this picture?"

very nice. i like the technique.

i loved to dirty my images when i was in B&W class. i was terrible at developing (klutz) so i made a style of it. :D

i'll have to post my current pics in the morning; remote ftp is still down for some reason... i can't wait for wireless to move in here at home (1.5 mbps up and down for $40/month).

So I went to Cambridgeside today. Stopped at the Apple Store, those iPod minis are pretty sweet. But afterwards, I stopped at Ritz Camera on the 2nd floor. I finally found a place with a Digital Rebel that wasn't crippled! SO I compared it to the 10D, and now I say "Screw the Rebel, I want a 10D!" :D

I can relate to that entirely.
I had the option of a.) Saving money|getting less camera or b.) Spend a bit more|Get more camera.

The 10D is one of the nicest cameras in the range, that and the D100 of course :p
