Bloc Party, Muse, Snow Patrol, Interpol, Foals, The Verve… they seem to be the artists in my library that Genius picks up from Coldplay, Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire.

Don't forget Keane. They're awesome.

Are you serious? This is exactly what the new Genius feature in iTunes is supposed to do!

Yeah, he could use Pandora... but Genius doesn't just make playlists out of the songs in your library, it can also recommend songs from the iTunes Store.

Hahahaha. Alt Rock? They're the most MOR band ever.

Why not try British Sea Power?

You might like Brand New's albums, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me and Deja Entendu.

A few songs you might find interesting are Jesus Christ, Degausser and Handcuffs from The Devil and God...

Yeah, they're quite middle of the road, but I'm sure they're lovely people to meet.

It's hard to suggest anything to you, mostly because Coldplay and U2 exemplify middle of the road British bands that other bands like Keane just mimic. There are LOTS of bands that sound like Coldplay (but worse), and even more that sound like U2, since they're so incredibly average.

I guess The Doves. They're Brit-rock, if you like that kind of thing (I do), but they're not boring, nor are they Coldplay/U2/Radiohead/Beatles copy-cats like most other Brit-rock bands, really. I think their best album is "The Last Broadcast" from around 2001, but some music elitist types will say that "Lost Souls" is the better album because it's more eclectic, and less mainstream. They're very good though. You'll also like like the entire Doves album, "The Last Broadcast", if you like U2. ;)

There's a version of Life in Technicolour with full lyrics. ;) Coldplay didn't release it until recently (or they haven't officially yet....not sure). It's new enough to just recommend, no? Just look for it. It'll be like getting a brand new song. :p Actually, one song that reminds me of "Life in Technicolour" is the Band of Horses song, "Lamb on the Lam (in the city)". It just sounds pleasant. The rest of the album, "Cease to Begin", is also quite good, although it gets boring near the end.

If you like DMB from the "Two Step" era, which basically includes every album before Everyday (i.e. Crash, Before These Crowded Streets, Under The Table, their EPs), then John Butler Trio will be perfect for you. John Butler is a crazy guitarist though, and cooler than DMB is right now. ;)

Really? That'll be nice :)

If the forums allow, would you mind pointing me to a torrent?

From your somewhat random list ;) here's a few recommendations...
Explosions in the Sky
Mogwai
Rooney
Travis
the new Oasis
Death Cab for Cutie

I find Last.fm is the best at finding new music I like. Just put in a bunch of artists you like and it will do the rest. Pandora of course is also a good option.

Give Winterpills a shot. Since you like Coldplay and The Arcade Fire I think you might dig them. "Lay Your Heartbreak" and "Broken Arm" are amazing songs.

Not a band, but you should try last.fm it records what you listen to and on each artist page gives you similar artists, for example if you put in arcade fire (http://www.last.fm/music/Arcade+Fire) you get suggestions.
