I see references in the forum to the new 24" cinema display essentially being made to extend the MacBook desktop. Any anticipation that it would also work against an iMac? Would be nice to extend the 24" iMac with a matching 24" cinema display side by side.

Right now its only compatible with the newly introduced MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air because it uses Display Port only.

Is it compatible with the first MBA or just the new ones?

It won't work with "current" iMac at this time. But since DisplayPort -> DVI is possible, a reverse adapter should be possible too.

Why don't you visit apple.com and find out yourself?
