Using a Time Capsule with a NAS connected via gigabit Ethernet ?

I’m currently using Time Machine to back up to an external drive connected via firewire. I have an extra NAS with a gigabit Ethernet port. If I purchased a Time Capsule can I backup to the NAS if it’s connected to the TC via gigabit ethernet connection ? I know I can connect the NAS to the TC using the USB but I thought it might allow for faster backups if I connect it to one of the four gigabit ethernet ports on the TC. I wish I could back up directly to the NAS on the network but I’ve heard that’s not possible unless you go through a TC.
