I've been looking to upgrade the RAM and the hard drive in my powerbook g4 so I can prolong this little baby's life. I don't see the point in throwing something out that is still working.

However, after a little scouting around online, I can only find 250gb drives advertised for Powerbook G4. Is this the case? Are there no 500gb drives that I could install too?

Is there a specific type of drive I need?

Any help would be much appreciated as I'd love to add as much HDD space as possible and 250gb would be ok, but 500 would be fantastic!

Thanks a lot,

TM

I'm pretty sure the only 500 gig drives available all have SATA interfaces - I believe the PB does not use SATA, only PATA.

Thanks! Can anyone else confirm this is right?

that is correct. 250gb is the largest drive available for that mac. the larger drives are all sata and cannot be used in your notebook.

Yep, true.

Maybe someday they will make bigger hard drives for those.

Thanks guys for the info! 100gb to 250 is still a good leap!

Ahh...

It's a good leap but you'll be like "Man this still isn't enough" :p

When I switched from 40gb to 160gb I was like YES!! (But I ran out again )

Now, I'm going to upgrade my iMac to a 1.5tb HD and hope that it will last a little longer

Fairly unlikely really, I'm afraid. All new laptops nowadays use SATA harddrives AFAIK, so there's little incentive for the manufacturers to spend the little extra on making a PATA version too.

Sorry to rain on your parade but Hitachi made a 500GB IDE drive, it is a Deskstar 0A32298 7200rpm and has an IBM FRU of 0A32307. Whether it will work on an Apple computer I'm not sure as the one I'm looking at doesn't have the Apple logo on it so may not work.

It won't work on a Powerbook - that drive is a 3.5 inch model designed for desktops.

Yep, I found this post search for 500GB PowerMac G4 and realized that after I submitted my post.
