View Full Version : [Merged] What to expect from third generation of iPod touch?

I've been eyeing the iPod touch and was just wondering from those of you who already own one, how will Apple make this thing better when they release the next generation (probably Fall 09)?
It seems a complaint about the 1G was the lack of external volume control, which was added for 2G. Any blatant problems with the current version that will be addressed by Apple?
It seems obvious to expect that the 3rd gen will be even thinner and with larger capacities for the current prices. I guess they could increase the screen resolution but at that size I wonder if it would make a difference. Is there a chance future generations will be able to support flash-based websites?
Thanks!

Almost anything is possible. I didn't think gen2 was worth upgrading, but if they had enabled bluetooth 2.0 for headphones and such I'd have bought one in a second. I don't think they'll make it any thinner, as that would compromise battery size/life.
I'm more interested in gen 5. By then it'll be thin membrane that uses the minute charge in your body to power OLED screen and the rest . You'll wear it like a glove. ;-)

FAKE!
an mp3 player would not ever have 3G, thats a cellular network frequency and why would an mp3 player make phone calls??!?
i can see a GPS in it but no way theres 3G unless its the new iPhone, definetly fake,
and besides that pictures is not the way apple would make theres and, besides now is not the time they would even begin starting to make advertisements like those

I wouldn't think there would be a new generation until September next year, that's when Apple traditionally revamps their iPod line.

Completely fake.
As for the 3rd generation Ipod Touch, the 2nd gen was just released in September so you won't be seeing a new version until next September at the earliest. There is some speculation that Apple may release a 64GB version early next year but I have my doubts.

new one came out in september. that's when Apple usually updates the iPod line. iPhone is usually around June/July with announcements in January/MW Expo. My friend let me use his 2G and it totally rocks. Much better than my 1G and makes it feel clunky in comparison.

Clunky, give me a break. They are exactly the same the same size! The new one gives you external speakers which are pretty nice but my older one can be charged by any charger.

New one is 0.5mm thicker than the 1st gen, so although it doesn't seem like much technically they are different sizes. The tapered edges on the 2g makes it feel much better to hold, also.

I reckon its a very good fake.
The thing that gives it away for me is the original, reflective dock which was on the 1g touch before the option to rearrange your icons was available.
Edit: The specs on that 'new' touch read more like an iPhone to me and as Apple's flagship hand-held device it would (and usually does) get all the best upgrades before the touch.

more for apps would be ok, but i think 36 hrs for music is the most their fitting in that small of a device unless they use like silver zinc or w/e that new kind is.

The capacity of an iPod touch has never changed at the same time a model has been released.
The last time capacity was increased was MWSF '08, and that was to 32GB.
It is suspected that a 64GB model will be released at MWSF '09.
If that does happen then we have great reason to believe that a 128GB model will be released not during fall '09 but rather MWSF '10.

No it wasn't. It was revised over a month beyond it. I don't see why everyone's getting all rallied up for macworld seeing as there's really no evidence to support that.

GPS. The number one reason I am waiting until the next revision. Absolutely no WiFi connection needed with pre-installed maps, like every other regular GPS device on the market has. The device is thin enough. Make it even a bit thicker, but give it GPS.
I would also like to see more emphasis with the device on the idea of being a PDA. Being able to actually put Word documents on it, and buy a small external roll-up keyboard for taking notes, would be extremely useful.
Also, more emphasis on connectivity, such as being able to output to a projector for presentations, or connect to an external game controller, ect. would be insanely useful.
No 3G, or other things pertaining to a phone contract. The reason this device is popular is because people want an iPhone without a super-expensive $2000 contract. But a camera for emailing pictures when connected to WiFi would be great. The side volume buttons, and speakers were two things the touch needed, and got in the second revision. Now we need GPS and a camera, as well as more options pertaining to a PDA.

I would like it to have features that the iphone doesn't have. Because right now the iphone inherits all the features and properties of the iPod Touch plus a camera and phone funtions. I want he iPod Touch to be unique, and not just "a dummer version of the iPhone"

Flash can be added through a software update right now if Apple wanted, and it'd work on both the 1st and 2nd gen already; it won't require entirely new hardware.
I, personally, think Apple shouldn't stray any further towards making it MORE like the iPhone; it's close enough as it is. Now that the speaker and volume controls have been added, there's been a few threads (including this one) where people have said they want cameras and, most absurdly, access to EDGE and 3G networks.
I personally don't see the camera happening, but to think it will get access to cellular networks is just stupid. That's what a phone's for...the people that suggested it don't seem to understand that to connect to EDGE/3G you'll have to pay some sort of regular fee to use it and most of all they seem to forget that ultimately it is an iPod. If they want to go overboard with suggesting features like that, just buy an iPhone. There is no way Apple will add that because they wouldn't want to infringe on the iPhone's market. Letting the iPod touch access cellular networks would honestly render the iPhone totally useless.

That is a most obvious statement few seem to comprehend. However, even fewer still seem to understand that just because the Touch will never have 3G (nor should it), does not mean it can't or shouldn't have a camera and GPS.

Just because the iPhone has a camera, doesn't mean that it is a stupid idea for the Touch to have one. It would make the Touch no more of an iPhone than having a browser, having the ability to use Apps etc.. There are now many apps out there that require (or at least make using them easier) the use of a camera. If the Touch didn't have a browser right now, and the iPhone did, would adding a browser to the Touch make it an iPhone?
I'd also like to see the battery life increased. Right now, I think the size of the Touch is perfect. If I had the choice of a better battery life, or a thinner Touch, I'd pick a better battery life.
Although it would be more of a software upgrade than a hardware upgrade, I'd also like the ability to manipulate my music more within the iPod. The ability to delete songs, create/change playlists etc.. then sync back to iTunes, would be nice.

The only likely hardware upgrade is a bump to 64GB along with the software upgrade of 2.3.
There is also the chance of a price drop.

Your source must be a year or two behind the times - or perhaps non-existant - because Apple's already got something exactly like it in the iPod touch called an accelerometer. Most applications support it, in fact.

Accelerometer, anyone?
It's what causes the iPod to change between landscape and portrait views, the best example of it's application would be games like Super Monkey Ball, where you move the iPod to move through the game.
It may not seem like Wii remote-type 'motion sensing', but in the end both the Wii remote and iPod use the same technology to do it; an accelerometer.
And if your friend happened to somehow mean something else, I wouldn't believe it unless they happened to work at Apple on something to do with the iPod touch/iPhone or was Steve Jobs himself.
Quite frankly, your friend has no idea what they're talking about.

While a nice list, I doubt we'll see all of these.

The problem is, last September's update was so lackluster, the next version in the coming September will HAVE to be a significant improvement, or the line will just be outdated. Basically, expect the upcoming Touch to be much more of an improvement than the one in September was. I was bummed by the update in September. I don't expect to be as much so NEXT September, and might buy one.

so third Gen. ipod touch will be coming Fall 2009. I think that only few options will be possible.
1. longer battery life.
2. boost internal speaker function.
3. camera (just basic function like iphone 3G).
4. microphone for different function (not for calling because it is not still phone even though we can call somebody through wifi capable apps with additional microphone equipped headphone).
5. more space (64GB).
6. more rigid form factor & material for less damage.
7. more faster processor chip (I don't remember that recently Apple acquired graphic chip based company for mobile device)
these are so far I can guess. if you expect future ipod touch will be more similar to iphone, forget about it. it won't be. 2007, 2008 is the year that Apple try to experiment with two similar devices. so I think that 2009 will be divided to different way.

3.) 64GB storage

An AMOLED screen would help extend battery life. No backlight required. Add a simple app that lets you turn off WiFi/Bluetooth/Nike radios when not being used. Add another simple app with economy/sport settings to let you easily choose best settings for longest possible battery life or a more entertaining but battery hogging profile if you prefer.

I don't think they will add a camera or GPS, what with PrePay iPhones just coming out they won't want this to compete too closely.
I think the overall size will stay about the same, but the screen may become sharper, brighter, maybe OLED?
Faster processor for games, more memory. More of what it does already, only better.

I think the ipod touch is almost perfect. It's on my X-mas list, actually. Ummm, I kno that doesnt entitle me to an opinion since I don't own one but from my point of view, a person who doesn't have one can see the pros and cons better. So anyways I was thinking to make it MORE perfect, they should make it to where you dont need to be in a wi-fi hotspot to use the internet. It can get annoying if you live far away from any sort of wi-fi. Oh, and maybe it should have the ability to be organized the way it's owner wants it. Having to look through it over and over to find what you want seems to be a problem (I do my research though I don't own one). But as for texting and cameras? That's a total no-no. The name iPhone mean anything to you people? Well that's where those feautures are. If u want them get an iPhone.

For the millionth time, Apple will not add cellular support to an iPod! The reason it has Wi-Fi is to connect to the internet, its not a phone! Wi-Fi isn't free you know! You do realize that you can buy a Wi-Fi router for $30 for a home network. Wi-Fi is just wired internet being broadcast wirelessly. So everybody listen (read) iPod's will never get cellular capabilities, that's what iPhone is for.

3. Some so of word processor that would be synced to a computer and printed (which also means bluetooth for a small keyboard, but that is already possible on the 2G because it has a bluetooth chip in it atm)

.....So anyways I was thinking to make it MORE perfect, they should make it to where you dont need to be in a wi-fi hotspot to use the internet. It can get annoying if you live far away from any sort of wi-fi......
Hmmm, well there are several ways Apple could make it that way....namely, roll out a 1,000,000-petabyte model that stores the entire Internet, and content is automatically updated every time you connect it to iTunes. :D Or, the touch could be 3G enabled, i.e., cellular Internet access. Or thirdly, you could move to a city with WiMax service.
ORRRR, you could buy a wireless-N router at your local electronics store for $69, and voila, you have WiFi in your house. ;) :D :D

GPS?
MICROPHONE?
Are you people insane?
Now that Apple knows they can get $70+ from microphone sales with the ear buds they will NEVER incorporate a mic. until sales wane enough or the hardware gets insanely cheap to make. Why GPS? What will that do? And why a vibration feature?
I am pretty sure Bluetooth will come along soon, and very possibly a camera on higher end iPTs. The iPT will always be a low end version of the iPhone and will never meet or max features with the iPhone. It will be integrated better into voip as a selling point, but you shouldn't expect it to be far beyond what it is now.
Hopefully they do allow it greater interactivity with the computer concerning data.

There's no point in being incredulous about seemingly impossible features. Go back two years, before the iPhone was announced and half the members here would have laughed you off the forum for suggesting Apple was making a phone. No one imagined there would be free edge network access in an ebook reader (except Amazon). A device doesn't need to be a phone to take advantage of ubiquitous network access. Half the apps on the touch use data from the internet. A device doesn't need to be a phone to benefit from GPS. Those who claims to KNOW Apple won't put either in an iPod are the same folks who KNEW they'd never make a phone.

No my friend, not like the accelerometer at all. Instead of touching the screen you hover your hands over the screen. I don't like the idea but hey, It probably won't happen. Might be just a rumour, but We'll see soon.

The problem with your argument? The iPhone has a $2000 contract. The Touch does not (see my sig). The two products have completely different markets. They do NOT compete.

Yeah, your argument would make sense in one world: an imaginary one.
Try to factor in price vs. market slice.
iPT has a wedge of market they aren't going to upset for a while.
With al that stuff in an iPT you will get an iPT costing as much as an iPhone, but without an iPhone. Think sales will last?

Did I anywhere suggest that the Touch should have a phone connection OR a 3G connection? No. And those two items are what differentiate the two products so much that virtually no one is trying to decide between the two product lines.

I don't think apple will release a netbook. I have a feeling that the highly mobile category device from Apple is, and will be, the iPod Touch and iPhone family. It will be once there is a more supped up version of OS X Mobile, a faster processor, and more memory (ram, not capacity).

Beric speaks my mind. The whole entrepreneurial buzz about iPhone/iPod Touch is that it's the pre-eminent platform for mobile, location-aware computing. Being a phone is as secondary as being a music player. I could really care less about either of these so-called primary functions. To me, it's simply the world's greatest (so far) hand-held web-browsing computer.
Just give me REAL location-awareness with GPS and some basic connectivity as a portable hard drive (wired or wireless).

- NO Bluetooth: Now that Apple will be able to supply expensive headphones, microphones, etc. I doubt they will rework those accessories and destroy a cash cow for the next couple years.
- NO GPS: I doubt Apple is going to enable the iPT with that because there is a small, small, small amount of people that would use an iPT with GPS. And it is expensive to add and keep the price range. Keep waiting, guys.
- NO Camera: I really doubt the camera is coming to 3G, but who knows? I bet it comes on the 4G. They could put it on the 3G as a boost to sales, and it wouldn't harm their iPhone market by making people move down to the iPT.
Better battery life, thinner, synching, hard drive, cut/paste/copy - I could see all these coming along.
The iPT is a high end iPod and a tinkertoy version of the iPhone. I really doubt Apple is going to bite into iPhone by allowing too much iPhone function to migrate to iPT. They'll probably try to migrate people upward to iPhone unless Apple can create an incredible voip service/network that trumps cell phones.

So everybody listen (read) iPod's will never get cellular capabilities, that's what iPhone is for.
and you obviously know all that being an Apple employee? you 'aficionado' type peeps make me laugh sometimes. like all those who say flash will never happen. Apple is capable of almost anything. and yes, it does make logical sense not to cross over the Touch and iPhone units too closely for obvious reasons, but it's certainly not impossible or against all realms of probabilities.
And it's certainly out of your reach to categorically tell us otherwise ;)
My biggest wish for a future generation iPod Touch is mobile broadband (without phone facilities). Something Apple is easily capable of doing, and i'm sure could come up with the correct pricing structure when the time is right. I bet the wish for this would be uber popular.
There are numerous mobile broadband hand held units on the market that do not contain phone facilities, that offer a yearly subscription for pence next to combined 3G internet/phone pricing, so why not? i'd love mobile internet, but i certainly dont want a phone. and the two dont need to go hand in hand.
lets have a bit of open mindedness and be a bit less condescending and know-it-all attitudes eh? we're all in the same boat. :)

I expect, perhaps not the 3rd Touch but maybe the 5th Touch, to have gotten rid of the need to touch it. It will have eye tracking, so it can tell what you're focused on. Sadly the ADA (http://www.ada.gov/) folks will file a lawsuit against it because one eyed people can't get it to work. Apple will respond by enabling touch to work again, but including a switch to turn it off. ;)

Here is my list of things i think should be on the next ipod touch:
More memory
Better battery life
A built in mic
Drag and drop onto it like a hard drive
A back that does not scratch easily
More customization ( like after jailbreaking without actually jailbreaking it)
GPS
Better speakers
Bluetooth
Camera
FM radio
Basically these things would be nice but they are not all going to happen
What i mean by a back that doesnt scratch is something aluminum brushed or plastic or anything because as cool as it looks it makes me want to handle it
really carefully and there would be no need for a case then. FM radio, bluetooth and a camera are all possible but don't count on the camera.

Definitely needed, especially if they finally let applications run in the background.
Better battery life
Always a good thing.
A built in mic
I don't think this will happen due to the f act they'd be ruining sales on a newly released product that has a mic and it would make it look to much like an iPhone (which Apple is trying not to do).
Drag and drop onto it like a hard drive
This has been needed for a long time but there are some apps that let you do this.
A back that does not scratch easily
This would be really nice but it's unlikely.
More customization ( like after jailbreaking without actually jailbreaking it)
I don't think this will happen because it goes against the SDK but maybe they will change it.
GPS
Not going to happen.
Better speakers
Seems likely. No matter how significant the update most things are upgraded somewhat.
Bluetooth
I hope so. It already has a Bluetooth chip for the Nike app but it probably has potential for other uses.
Camera
One of the main things I'm hoping for.
FM radio
Definitely not going to happen.

I would buy a 3rd gen even if it only got a camera and better battery life.

If they put GPS on the next generation iPod Touch (one being released in 2009) I will buy one myself just to spite myself. But, no. Never going to happen. The iPT has a market and it has no solid reason to get GPS to fit that market. GPS would increase mfg. price and lower profit compared to the amount of extra sales... how many people would actually come to the iPod Touch just because it has GPS? 1%? .001%?
I wish it had a camera, but I have the suspicion that it won't be on the iPT until 2010, if then.

Saying "no cell phone" uses real GPS is incorrect, unless you mean "cell phone" as opposed to "smartphone" (even though the iPhone is sometimes lumped into the "not a smartphone" category, it's hard to argue that it isn't, I think...)
As at least one example, the AT&T Tilt (a.k.a HTC Kaiser, HTC TyTN II) has and can use normal GPS (not AGPS) to navigate without using any kind of cellular data. I have one, have used it, and know this to definitely be true :D I imagine there are other smartphones that can do this as well.
Also, as far as I can tell, the iPhone does have normal GPS, but it also is assisted by other things.
It wouldn't be impossible to add to the iPod Touch, but I'm unsure as to whether Apple would /want/ to. It would be crazy useful, and I'd be all for it, but Apple does have a benefit to keeping the two devices reasonably separate and features that bring them closer together isn't necessarily in their best interest.
Although who knows? Maybe one day they'll be the same device and if you want the cell service you get a contract for it and if you don't... you can still use all of the non-cell dependent features. But that seems unlikely. XD

having a text messaging feature will need a wireless service and completly defeats the purpose of a Iphone.
more apps will be better too.
perhaps a wireless syncing device might be good.
And a less-easily-scrach able back.

I'm afraid wireless syncing would kill the battery.
And yes, a less scratch attractive back would be awesome. Maybe something like the iPhone 3G's back.

I found it interesting reading through this thread.
Obviously, many of us have our pet desires that we want to see on the next gen touch.
I would expect the following for sure:
- More memory (64GB)
- Longer lasting battery
Items I would not expect to see:
- FM tuner
- Camera
- GPS
I would be willing to bet that there is a pent up buying demand for a larger capacity touch with a longer lasting battery. Just those two items alone will result in sales.
Personally, I would love to see an application or built in feature that you could display anything on the touch to a TV. Right now I can do movies. Hopefully, we'll see that in the future as the touch would make a nice presentation device for PowerPoint slides (converted to JPGs).

We are doing exactly what you describe with a Sansa View. I demonstrated and sold mine to my department as it was far simpler to use than a laptop, the cable cost $7, and we can haul it to presentations in a pocket. What some manufacturer needs to implement is a little IR receiver that will let you control the device with a remote control. The Touch developers might come up with a wifi remote. I could see bluetooth working for those devices that include it.
And although I haven't seen one to buy yet, Samsung has a media player with built-in pico projector that will play powerpoint files natively. Just put them on a microSD card and stick it in the player.

In addition to the numerous performance enhancements already suggested in this thread, I would like to see a cosmetic one - namely, do away with the scratch prone, shiny, mirror finish silver case. I have done nothing but place my Touch on soft cloth surfaces, yet it still somehow attracts numerous scratches. I have a feeling though, that Apple won't do this, because if they did, fewer people would buy those expensive $20-30 dollar aftermarket cases. I have a Nano that does not have the shiny back and I have yet to buy a case for it, and guess what - no scratches.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Apple may do one of two things here... the next Touch will either cost £100 more for little gain - maybe the 64GB people are talking about, and one or two other minor upgrades that don't really affect things that much or add any new features (I'm thinking of the new MacBook here, almost seems like an expensive downgrade in some respects), or it will just be a few minor improvements but nothing that will get people rushing out to the shops.
I don't have an iPod Touch, although I was looking at maybe buying one until I read about the numerous problems, so it's these that I would like to see sorted out first and foremost. Whether it requires a few tweaks in the hardware, upgrading a few ICs or periphery devices, or a major software update (in which case it wouldn't be a new product as such), I don't really care so long as the major problems get fixed!
After that, GPS would be a very nice feature - imagine the in-car entertainment potential for such a device, sitting on your dash as a GPS device too.
Not bothered about a camera, but the ability to sync with bluetooth-enabled cameras for geowotsit on photos would be excellent - imagine having your Touch in your pocket (with tunes playing while you're out and about if you like), your digital camera takes a photo and automatically reads GPS data from your Touch.
Incidentally, does anyone have a clue when a software fix or new generation of hardware might be forthcoming? What are the usual cycles for such things?

I don't think you really know much how technology works...
1) Bigger speaker means bigger ipod. They aren't going to make the ipod much bigger just for a bigger internal speaker that is only really useful for little noises and not for playing music anyways.
2) You can only have an internet connection everywhere if you pay for a service to give you internet. There's no world-wide wifi connection.
3) The amount of apps is constantly growing and they are developed by normal developers, not Apple.
4) Since they have an 8Gb, 16b, and a 32GB, the next logical step would be 64GB.....no 80GB....ever
5)Camera (Camara as you like to say) most likely will not be added in my opinion because it's one of the things that encourage users to buy the iphone. IMO, it would be stupid on the Touch and just make it bigger, which I do not want
6) Input for printing....? Not sure what you mean by this, but I dont know what you would have to print on your ipod that you can't readily get on a computer
7) Copy and paste...I agree. That will come with a software update, and hopefully the next one available.

HEY! "It's not an iPhone" is my line!
And that wouldn't ruin iPhone sales, only increase the sales of the iPod touch.
I say "It's not an iPhone" when people think it should have EDGE / 3G and/or a built in mic.
Totally agree.. A camera WOULD NOT deserve the "It's not an iPhone" line, nor would a built-in microphone or even GPS! All MacBooks have a camera and built-in microphone. Should we be saying "Dude... It's not an iPhone!"... or to the iPhone, "Dude... it's not a Mac!"??
Don't limit the iPod Touch in this way... as iParis said, EDGE/3G should not be a part of the Touch, but I'll have to admit, I would like to see continued support for VoIP (like TruePhone). The Touch could be Apple's trojan horse to supercede the carriers. However, Apple is pretending to not focus on that quite yet.

It needs more hardware buttons. At the least, something for play/pause.
That's the biggest hardware flaw (aside from that they seem to die from rapid temperature changes).
Software-wise Apple still needs an office suite for it, and support for more calendars in Windows...I mean Outlook is the only thing they support?
Lots of software issues like that. Needs a lot of work to get it up to Palm OS standards from a decade ago.

Yeah, no it's a pain to do anything super long, but it's very useful to just edit a little bit of data, or view it or whatever. I've had a set of office documents I've been using since the late 90's on my Palm, and there's not equivalent functionality on mobile OS X.
I just saw this...MobileFiles Pro from Quickoffice though yesterday though (someone on here pointed it out!) It LOOKS like a really solid spreadsheet, and it's by a company that's been making products like this for a long time. No Word equivalent, but at least it's something. (The process of getting files on and off it is a total hack too it looks like, but...hey it's innovative!)
I'm planning on buying that today I guess.

Office (or iWork) for iPhone, this can be solved with the app store though (obviously)
*Copy/Paste...!
Hardware wants:
Slightly better-sounding speakers, I'm not talking anything super great, but just a slight update.
Bluetooth
I don't like the chrome backing, but I really don't think this is something Apple will want to be changing anytime soon.
*64 GB would be amazing, albeit expensive.
Better, more durable LCD and glass
*Better battery life
*=Something I actually would expect
I really don't think the new Touch will be anything much different than the current generation, but we will have a good idea when the iPhone 3gen comes out in a few months.
EDIT: Guys. A camera is NOT gonna happen. And I'm fairly sure Bluetooth and Wireless sync won't happen either...do you realize how long it would take to sync wirelessly?

I wouldn't count on a better internal speaker; it's not supposed to be high quality, I think its really only for games.
I like the look of the chrome backing when it's new, but it scratches quite easily.
What I really think apple should do is start putting OLED screens in the iPods. It would look great and save battery life! They could at least do it for the nano and classic; they only have ~2" screens.
The touch is leading the iPhone in terms of hardware right now, we'll see if that continues.
Apple has said from the beginning that wireless syncs aren't an option because of times. I don't think Steve Jobs would say that unless they've tested that extensively.

Those of you (including me) who wish the Touch had full-time internet access, it's not impossible. The Kindle has it, and after looking at comparison prices you could conclude it's worth about $100. The new Kindle is $359. A Sony ebook reader without 3G is $259. Yes, some of the access cost is mixed into the ebook price you pay, but not everyone buys alot of books. My wife has purchased only 8 in the last year of owning her Kindle. The Kindle has a browser (although not a very good one) but will give you access to the web when nothing else can. She's demonstrated access to the Kindle book store probably 300 times in that year though.
So if you wouldn't mind an extra $100 in cost for your Touch, and are willing to pay another 10% or more for apps and music, then you can have that always-on 3G connectivity.
If you're curious about the new Kindle, I've posted some unboxing photos (http://4dthinker.blogspot.com/2009/02/kindle-20-unboxing.html) on my blog.

My fiancee and I were talking about this subject this morning after I resurrected my 2g from it's watery grave in a baggie of dried rice.
With the comparitive robustness of the touch (compared to the classic) and its features, I had a hell of a time thinking what features on a new model would compel me to buy it, and I'm a gadget whore.
We were then speculating that with the flash based models, apple may be reaching the ipod saturation point, where everyone who wants an ipod already owns one or two that they're content with.

Colors irritate me. Yes, there's an easy way to delete songs. Select songs by holding Command and clicking at the same time. Then, once you've selected all the songs you want to delete, hold Control and click on one of the selected songs. Click Delete. Do not keep the data, move everything to the trash.

I would think the 3G would cost more than that. I would estimate the Kindle's price to be maybe 100-150 without it. Also, the Kindle doesn't create heavy traffic because it's only useful for text-heavy sites like wikipedia, which doesn't require a lot of bandwidth. Besides, Touch + 3G + mic adapter + VoIP (fring) = no need for an iphone! :P.
Oh, and one more thing. You never took into account what it would cost (both in money and space-wise) to fit the 3G chip into the iPod. It might mean no 64GB iPod for a while, because Apple would be limited to one memory chip like the iPhone.

I don't need 3G on my Touch because I have WiFi at home and work (a college campus), essentially 95% of the time where I am. I don't need GPS as I don't get lost and don't see a need for any of the location-based apps. I don't need a camera as I have one in my phone which is already with me everywhere I go.
What I'd love the Touch to do is become more of a portable computer.
- Add bluetooth that supports keyboards and mice, printing, and stereo headphones.
- Add a display port.
- Or maybe make a simple dock that you can park your Touch/iPhone in to turn it into a PC. That dock could contain bluetooth or USB connections for Keyboard/Video/Mouse.
Then make available iPhone/Touch versions of Word, Excel, etc., whatever your mac-based favorite productivity apps are. I'd buy two sets of periferals, one for home and one for work. Then I'd stop lugging a laptop around.

I'm more interested in gen 5. By then it'll be thin membrane that uses the minute charge in your body to power OLED screen and the rest . You'll wear it like a glove. ;-)
Maybe, i don't think nano/membrane technology will be around in consumer electronics for a long time soon, it's great to imagine what it could be like but tbh the technology will be way too expensive to sell to the wider market, your looking at 50 - 75 years before it becomes cheap enough to manufacture for consumers.
I do agree with oled screens though, i think if apple took the first step in portable oled screens then we'd see some major breakthroughs in technology.

I want apple to spend atleast 2-3 more years before they bring out a new ipod touch. Mainly because they need to spend lots of time developing new technologies so that it's top of the line and the technologies less expensive. I'd also like this because i've only had my ipod for six months and would like to keep it for a few years before being forced by apple to upgrade it.
when i think about what i would like on the new ipod touch which there inevitabely will be, i think that they should probably start on upgrading the screen to an oled screen and somehow figure out how to turn the oled screen into a touch screen. I'd also like improved speakers and bluetooth for bluetooth earphones and to sync via itunes with it. I'd also like some document editing software which could be easily bought through the apps store.
It's hard to think of anything else though as the ipod touch is such a good multimedia player already. I think a main upcoming improvement will be the memory which should be upgraded to 64 gb undoubtadly.

Won't happen. I can't remember a time where Apple hasn't updated one of their iPods during the September 'refresh'. Yes, the shuffle may not have had many major upgrades in the last couple years, but in the last two years it has seen a 2GB model released, as well as new colours just a few months back.
2 or 3 years between any updates? Don't think so.

About all the speakers are good for is the bleeps and zings of games, when kids have pals looking over their shoulder and they all want to hear the pops, whizzes and splat effects during play.
But anyone listening to music on the speakers built into an iPod Touch would get better quality if they bought a 20-year old, $5 transistor radio from a local junk store.

When most people think ipod they don't think of all the apps, the internet, watching high res movies or accelerometer. They think MP3 player. The camera would be great if not just for fun with all of the apps out there. Flash is a MUST right NOW, there are too many websites using it. I would like to see the camera, cut and paste, good speakers and mic, more ability to create edit and print documents, let me change the theme already!!! this is just ridiculous that we can't and better battery life.

I am looking for 3 major things.
More memory, which we assume is a given.
Longer battery life, by at least 1 hour, also very doable.
Louder and higher quality speaker.
I know that some have been down on the speaker but I have used it often including when I am showing movies to friends or letting them listen in on podcasts.
A louder speaker is a definte plus for me.
Also I would love to see a brighter screen.
I commute on the bus every day and I set the brightness on max and it works well. But sometimes its not enough, especially in direct sunlight.
So a brghter screen setting would be great as well as a higher res screen.
Finally, I have always thought that the touch could fit a larger screen, by stretching it out to cover the entire front.
A 4 inch screen would still be very portable and, if it were OLED, have a great battery life.

FAKE!
an mp3 player would not ever have 3G, thats a cellular network frequency and why would an mp3 player make phone calls??!?
i can see a GPS in it but no way theres 3G unless its the new iPhone, definetly fake,
and besides that pictures is not the way apple would make theres and, besides now is not the time they would even begin starting to make advertisements like those
I agree it's fake, but I'm not sure that the idea of 3G is totally out of the realm of possibility; I don't see it happening anytime soon however. If we were talking about an iPod Classic, agreed. But the touch is almost a mini computer in itself. Like a mini netbook and you can get 3g with a subscription service to AT&T now and subsidize the cost of the thing. They gave the touch wi-fi to get internet access, so why not a full-time paid subscription internet with 3G?
I can TOTALLY see 3G making into the 10" netbook/big iPod/whatever it is that Apple is rumored to have in the works. Different story I know, just saying how 3G can/is working itself into other devices.

my only want is go-anywhere internet, even if it's made available via a dongle. i wouldn't mind paying a few bucks every month for that service at all :)
I'd love to see Bluetooth added with the ability to tether through a phone. I don't actually expect to ever see it, but I'd love it. That way I can use a phone and carrier of my choice, and if my iPod's battery runs out because I've watched too many movies I can still make phone calls.
Really, what I'd like to see in a new iPod touch are improvements in the areas where my old Palm TX still beats it:
- calendar UI (creating a new event, for example)
- Bluetooth tethering (Internet anywhere, as long as my phone and network support it)
- copy and paste

To borrow from "Macysamum" said I would like to see the new ipod touch have the following:

Like I said before a radio would be good
Blutooth activated would be cool
Streeching the screen so it's like 4 inches would be cool
A 2 megapixel or higher would be great, and a digital zoom.
Radio can go either way-now xm would be great. *
Bluetooth ok
Bigger Screen. Hell yes? * Rember the Newton? I would like a screen like
that. And the option to have 1/2 small sd cards for storage ext. :D
Maps and gps - lower 48 states *
I would upgrade my ipod 2g to this when i first came out.
* options like the the 8, 16, 32 gig units now, but with 16, 32, 64.
Improved speaker for gps. Camer with lens facing out in front of windsheild
for recording, trip while using gps.
just my thoughts.

Wow, lame fake.
First off, that iPod doesn't even have the newest firmware.
I'd say September, like usual. Do your research.
First, take a look at this thread, What to expect from a third generation iPod touch (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=596359).

how slow would that be though? mobile internet isn't particularly fast in the first place. trouble is, i dont use a mobile phone, so blue tooth (and gps) for me would be useless.

id also like to say that........ for you who think that puting a camera is making it to much like an iphone just think of this....... when apple made maps and wifi on the ipod touch we would probably of argued the same thing...:D
i would also like to see when controlling volume in music and stuff that we get like a clickwheel on the touch screen like on the other ipods just to give it more of an ipod feel..

Agreed. All the different buttons, switches and lights are not what Apple is about - even if Apple ever tried to incorporate these things into the design, they'd do it in such a way that the iPod touch still looks appealing. That mock-up is just...a total mess.

read this: http://dckj95.blogspot.com/2008/11/ipod-touch-64gb-leaked.html
It's all great aside from the art of the iPod itself, which is a poorly designed fake...
No rocker volume switch.
The chrome finish doesn't wrap around to the front.
There's a line on the bottom right hand corner of the iPod. Looks like a random extra button to me, and who ever heard of Apple adding a random extra button?
The camera is on the front! What idiot would design a fake iPod touch with a camera on the same side as the touch screen? How are you supposed to take pictures like that?
The "Shop..." and "Copyright..." lines at the bottom of the ad use the wrong font. The 8 is bigger than the rest of the numbers.

okay, if apple does eventually add all of the new features that people have been requesting (camera, gps, the list goes on), it will be way more than an ipod. (it already is.)
apple should change the name of the 3 gen. ipod touch to "i-thing with lots of cool features including but not limited to those of an ipod." :apple:

A 4 inch screen would still be very portable and, if it were OLED, have a great battery life.
okay, enlarging the screen to fit the entire front of the ipod makes so much sense! the bigger screen would be really useful, you could fit more apps on a page and have a bigger screen for cover flow, games (maybe fullscreen movies?). they could make the home button part of the screen instead of adding a separate button for it. i don't really like how the screen doesn't cover the whole ipod--is it meant to look cool design-wise or what? because functionally speaking, i don't think it makes much sense.

as someone earlier mentioned, being able to make calls through the ipt via bluetooth would be amazing.
I also want a legitimate gps chip to take advantage of the future turn by turn apps that will be in the app store
more memory is always nice :)
camera would be great, but its use would be slightly limited. i actually want an internal microphone. that way apps like ocarina, shazam, and others would be ipt compatible
of course this is just my wish list. here's what i think will happen.
memory update. and MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE gps.

my prediction would be
-3g even though I kinda doubt it because that would give it the ability to be a phone, and cheap one at that.
-maybe no buttons or just one touch sensitive one. since apple apparently hates buttons.
-higher resolution and maybe a bigger screen
-built in microphone. again kinda unlikely because, again apple wants the touch as far from a phone as possible.
thats about it for new features that I can think of. and since it will more then likely just be running iphone os 3 theres not really any chances for a new gui.

Aside from the jump from the original iPod 1st Gen to 2nd Gen, every new generation of every iPod has included major upgrades/changes. Check it out here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod).
On the iPod touch 3rd Gen, I think we'll see:
-Copy/Paste (3.0 Software, Already confirmed)
-Bluetooth compatibility (3.0 Software, Already confirmed)
-A slightly larger screen. Perhaps a full screen, with the home button moved to the side above the volume rocker.
-GPS
Aside from those features, the only other thing I would like to see on the next generation touch is a camera. I know that thousands of people have said that there's no way the touch will ever have a camera, but, as many others have already said, didn't thousands of people say there would never be a touch-screen iPod?
The reason I think we may see a camera on a future generation of the touch is because it fits in with Apple's slogan for the touch: "The Funnest iPod Ever." Music is fun. Videos are fun. Using the internet is fun. YouTube is fun. Games are fun. Other Apps are fun. Cameras are fun. So it may not come in the 3rd generation, but I think we'll see a camera on the touch at some point.
All that said, I'm still trying to decide whether I should ask for a 2nd Gen touch for my birthday (in April) or just save up and wait for the 3rd Gen to come out in September.

Those GPS devices have the maps pre-loaded. They're not downloading any information.
Prior to 3.0 Apple have not allowed any turn-by-turn development (except for one which somehow got through) but they soon will. Only caveat is that the developer needs to provide the maps so these apps will be considerably larger (many hundreds of megabytes) than the apps doing the rounds lately.
It'll be freaking sweet though. If they put a GPS receiver in the iPod touch we can use it on Google Maps when connected to a WiFi network to get better location based stuff and use the turn-by-turn apps with the maps pre-installed when away from a network.

Okay what device do you know of that is just a PDA type with a monthly internet service? And where would that service come from? Seriously all you are missing is the phone feature, Apple would never do this, they want you to buy an iPhone and an iPod separately. I think putting a camera is dumb, and you all are gonna be disappointed with some of the stuff you're asking for.
Think about it, Yes the Touch has become more a PDA like device, only because of it's software capabilities and the vast variety of what the touchscreen can do.
Now think about the Hardware: Volume buttons, Small Speakers, Headphone Jack, Bluetooth (for stereos and future headphones)... All music function related... now throw in a camera and the back looks like an iPhone, Apple doesn't want you to confuse an iPod with an iPhone.
As for GPS, I wasn't on board for this one, but it may be feasible depending on how they could fit it in there given how much the storage would go up, you notice for the Touch that the higher storage and the lowest storage are the same thickness so they have to go by the rule that GPS would have to fit with say 64GB of storage the same way it would fit with 8gb. But again, GPS shies away from the music aspect of what an iPod, so if they leave it out to keep the cost down I wouldn't mind.
I just won't keep my hopes up for stuff like that because, I've read these threads that come up with alot of things I think may or may not be in the next touch and some people start to believe it too much without any factual evidence of the coming features, then when Apple announces it without those highly talked about features you guys have discussed here, Some people get very upset. But like I said I keep my reservations about the next touch and hopefully be surprised more than I expect :D
Anyway I can't wait til September to replace my 5th gen iPod video 30GB with the new Touch!

That's pretty cool really, and though you right in saying it's not against all realms, I think for Apple's sake of being able to sell the Touch and the iPhone and not alienate one over the other goes against that theory. If the Touch came with wireless internet for a monthly fee, many people, including me, would get rid of their iPhone and not care to buy a new one. This sets themselves up for iPhones to sell below expectations since the Touch would be that much closer to it's features. So, although possible, for Apple's sake of successfully selling the iPhone and the Touch, they have to set some boundaries in features to differentiate the 2 platforms of Phone and Mp3 device.

Except under the new app model the developer could sell you the GPS app, with the ability to purchase just the maps that you need, when you need them.
The App Store is becoming a huge business for Apple and I wonder if some iPhone features will appear on the Touch, to increase App sales. I'm thinking specifically a microphone, but maybe GPS. A camera is less likely but could happen.

perhaps they'll incorporate an all in one feature on the new netbooks/tablets that'll no doubt be out soon ;)
you're certainly right about not letting the Touch encroach into iphone territory though, i agree on that point.
So my way of thinking is why not at least give the option for Touch users? as in make the new Touch hardware at least compatible to add-ons and plug-ins which will enable more third party hardware gigs - like dongle or mobile internet, speakers/mics, remotes, game control pads etc etc. Keep the Touch on it's own path from the iphone, but give third part hardware a chance, we as the end user at least have the option then if we wish to pay for it.
i wouldn't want all this built in as the sleek sexiness of the device, which is what initially attracted me to it, would slowly diminish. (look at the iphone, in profile it looks fugly to me) and, as you say, would probably start to piss off a load of loyal Apple/ipod supporters and Apple themselves, but opening up the Touch's hardware/dock port to 3rd party devices would be a real exciting option i think :)

is anyone sure about the september release date? i lost my classic and dont want to buy another one if the new touch has enough memory, but also dont want to wait 6 months!
Apple has always released the new generations ipods in september
And probably the 64GB memory update might be soon in April like last year
GPS is less likely because it would make the product thicker and make the IPT too close to the iphone
So I don't believe in gps even if it is in my wishes list:apple::apple::apple:

I'd like to be able to add some external memory. I see no one ask for such a thing. It would be so great to be able to push in a micro SD card, to be able to change your music, movies and such. Even better, if this would be possible you could buy bigger SD memory every other year.
I guess iPod memory size is not the mean reason to buy a new iPod for most users, so I expect this will not hurt sales that much. Actually, I'd easier buy a new one if this feature would be added.

My personal iPod Touch 3G wishlist is:
Higher resolution OLED screen;
Better CPU and GPU (graphical quality capable of competing with Sony's PSP2 that'll probably have graphics on par with the original Xbox or better);
High capacity (Silver-Zinc, for example) battery;
Louder, clearer speaker;
Vibrate function for in-game rumble and for notifications while in silent mode;
Fully activated Bluetooth connectivity with cellphone/laptop-to-ipod tethering, file transfers, P2P gaming (already confirmed in 3.0), etc;
802.11n;
3.2MP (minimum) still camera;
64GB version;
WiFi syncing;
Up to 5 apps running in the background (if the hardware can handle it);
Sleep button slightly moved so we don't accidentally press it while holding the iPod firmly in landscape mode;
Headphone jack slightly moved so we can comfortably hold the iPod in landscape while gaming;
100% backwards compatible with the current applications/games;
Fiercely advertised as a gaming device.
The main differences between the iPhone 3rdGen and the iPod Touch 3G could be, again, the GPS, the phone capabilities (obviously), the lack of a second camera for video calls (iPhone 3rdGen will probably have one), higher resolution camera with video (only on the iPhone) and many more.
This would make the iPod Touch a complete platform but it would still prevent it from becoming more attractive a package than the iPhone.
P.S.:
Unrealistic wishlist:
Internal GPS receiver or the ability to connect to 3rd party dongles via Bluetooth;
Built-in mic for VoIp calls and in-game chat without a headset.

First off all, the next iPhone that's coming out is the iPhone 2, not "iPhone 4G" like someone has been saying. I can understand the confusion due to most iPods being designated by their generation ie. My iPod video is the 5G iPod. But with the iPhone 3G is a type of wireless service to stay "untechnical".
A lot of what you guys are asking for is silly. The iPod Touch is a media player... NOT a gaming machine, if you want a gaming machine go buy a PSP. The guy asking for the SD slot... Come on, that's just not Apples style... If you think an SD card will make transferring music and media easier... You're doing it wrong now.
Here's what you will get:
Better resolution screen
More memory
Faster Internet
Faster CPU/GPU
You're not going to get a bunch of great stuff that the iPhone has because it's not an iPhone and Apple doesn't want the two products to compete.

Original iPhone - iPhone 1st Gen;

Next iPhone - iPhone 3rd Gen.
I disagree with you on the "The iPod Touch is (...) NOT a gaming machine" statement. It is most definitely a gaming machine, just not on par with the portable consoles from Sony and Nintendo. It doesn't mean it can't get better. People need to understand that the iPhone/Touch needs games specifically developed for the platform. Devs trying to force certain genres that only work with buttons and analog sticks will surely fail.

I believe all of those will be present in the next iPod but new hardware features will also be available and with the DSi sporting not one, but two cameras, I think Apple will indeed include a still camera in the next iteration of the does-it-all media player.

I know everone has a different want for the new ipod touch.
I want some one that has the infromation to explain how the gps on the iphone works? My friend has the iphone but doesn't know how it works. I have a thought but not sure. "does it just ping off cell towers"?
and please don't flame me for question; it just something i would like to know and see on future ipod 2g.

The GPS antenna on the iPhone connects to a certain number of sattelites to determine your position (just like any normal GPS system). But then, the iPhone connects to your 3G network so it can download the images and information into the Google Maps app.
Normal GPS systems have all the maps built-in, so they don't need to download them on-the-fly. Unfortunately, the iPhone needs to do that.
But with 3.0, devs can now make their own Map apps (GPS apps with maps built-in) and use the iPhone's GPS receiver to determine your location. That means no more downloading info over a 3G network when using GPS.
That's also why many people think the next iPod Touch will have GPS. Now that you don't need a 3G network to make it work, it's certainly possible.
But I think Apple will maintain the GPS capability iPhone-only.

how slow would that be though?
In my case, EDGE speed, so similar to the original iPhone. More to the point, it's going to be faster than waving the thing around trying to find an open Wi-Fi network....

not to mention APPLE is marketing the ipod as a gaming device
as for that list, i would want all that and extended battery life
a camera would be nice, but unless it is 3mp or more, i dont think it is worth the space it would take up on the ipod

The iPod Touch is clearly not just a media player. It has internet capabilities and has a great platform for games. I think especially now afterthe software update. I'm sure developers are going to make third party add ons to make games even better. I have a few games on my Touch that I absolutely love already.
It would take a lot for me to buy a new iPod Touch. I have a 2G Touch, and after the software update, there aren't too many more things I want. A camera would be great, though my phone has one. I don't drive enough to really need a GPS (when I get a car I'll need one though). The OLED screen would be great, and maybe a built in mic in addition to basic hardware upgrades. All of those would be nice, but not completely obligitory. I probably won't buy a new Touch for a few more generations either way. I need to get my money's worth out of the Touch I have now, which I LOVE.
There are a few other software things that haven't come out yet that I want:
- Some sort of document editing.
- Flash
- Better organization of apps
- Consolidated email
Other than that I'm good.

I see the iPod Touch as a MID with iPod capabilities hence why they called iPod Touch instead of Touch. With that said since other MIDs have GPS,cameras,3G,etc I don't see why the touch can't. But I don't see Apple doing a lot of those things being asked it is more up a 3rd parties alley.
Apple has not been marketing the iPod Touch properly hence why people are constantly bitching and moaning "It's a media player not a phone it can't do anything besides play music". Apple needs to stop focusing on the iPhone for minute and tell people that the touch is more then an iPod because apparently people aren't understanding.

the 3rd gen ipod should be spectacular. higher resolution? yes! thinner? no! the 1g was .02 inches less thick, but 2G gets hours more life. voice recognition should be standard, maybe fingerprint to avoid theft. could be used as a homelink to open garage door. finally they should make it fly. hehe (u never know...)

Haha :D are you new to Apple? Not even the first iPod had external memory, That's not Apple's style, if you buy an 8gb, they want you to buy a 16gb when the new one comes out and so on. Apple knows that if they put an external memory card you would have no reason to buy the next gen or even the one after that, they are a company and they want to make money.

I agree with that i got a 1G 8gb and now when the 3g comes out i'll get a 16gb because my 8gb is now full and probably the 16gb is going to be at the same price that the 8gb is now. so by each two generation i'll get a larger model

OK, so here's what it NEEDS:
-An OS that MAKES SENSE; I understand that Apple limiting options and stuff for the user make it harder for you to completely mess the thing up, but they need to have their OWN method of unlocking (similar to jailbreaking) so people like me can install the apps that are actually worth having, like Winterboard, MobileFinder, Torrentula, etc, without having to jailbreak the device and, "void the warranty." The ability to manage ALL filetypes on the device would be nice (music has been specifically mentioned in this thread). Added codec support (not hard, there are apps for the jailbroken software that already have added support). Better picture management: why is that my 240+ photos in jpg format take up 12MB on my CompactFlash card, which I can pop right into my Windows Mobile 6 PDA and read, take up 165+ MB on my iPod touch, in a LOWER RESOLUTION?! I SSH'd a 55KB jpg with the title, "IMG_0010.PNG" and a copy of it as, "IMG_0010.THM" and it showed up perfectly on my iPod touch, taking up only a fraction of the space it would otherwise use. I didn't change the file format at all, just the name and extention. And the apps like AirSharing allow direct copy and direct reading of jpgs, which is beautiful. For all the crap Microsoft gets (and I don't like Microsoft), they've had C&P on their mobile OS for YEARS, plus the ability to use removeable media, which makes file management SOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier. Folders for apps, instead of a stupid, 9-page limit. If there weren't TOTALLY AWESOME games for the iPod touch, I wouldn't have even thought twice about getting one; without games, it's a piece of crap next to my PDA.
-Everything the iPhone has, minus specific phone capabilities (text/MMs, 3G/EDGE); camera, microphone (for OS 3.0 voice notes, apps like that Steam app, or whatever it's called, and the Zippo lighter app, etc.), Bluetooth for A2DP, keyboard, etc.
-More RAM; my Windows Mobile PDA can run a better music player, IE mobile, File Explorer, AND Opera Mobile (with multiple tabs) and have more RAM left over than an iPod has, just from the home screen.
Here's what I WANT in the iPod touch:
-An OS that MAKES SENSE (see above); the music and video players should be able to search the device for audio files, or let you set specific folders, like on desktops and in Windows Mobile, and that should be used in combination with the following...
-Removeable media (SDHC, micro SDHC, whatever); this would allow for them to only have to manufacture ONE device, with, say, 8GB of built-in, and a micro SDHC or full-size SDHC (I'd like full-size, less expensive cards), then getting extra memory is cheap, and the device would appeal to a whole additional set of geeks, that it otherwise wouldn't appeal to. Heck, if they had support for SDIO, then people whouldn't need to complain about not having a camera, just buy one like this (http://sewelldirect.com/Pretec-SD-Camera-1-3MP-SmartCam_specs.asp?source=froogle&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=cse). They could up the price to $270, or perhaps $300, with relatively little money put into the technology, make just as many sales as they otherwise would, but have additional sales from people like my dad, and his boss, who use memory cards and take pictures all day.
That's all I can think of now, but I could've put that into some long lists of little things. Meh, whatever. The OS 2.0 sucked, the OS 3.0 will suck a little less, via copy and paste, but that's about it.
EDIT: A couple people said that they want higher resolution, OLED, and lower price. The only way to get all of those, is to...um...wait 10 years for the cost of OLED screens to come down. Even at the current resolution, using an OLED screen would make the 8GB model cost $1500, IF you're lucky. Sony has a 10" OLED screen for $2500, and that's just a screen, with HDMI input, USB, and one of their own MS card slots. Apple overprices their stuff just as bad as Sony, so OLED screens right now are out of the question.

Of course they SHOULD, but they won't. Apple CAN'T do anything they SHOULD. They SHOULD have put MMS, multiple-file e-mailing, A2DP, video recording, and C&P (to say the LEAST) in the very first replease. I'm utterly astonished at Apple's idiocy. If they had done that, then I would've actually had a measurable level of respect for their programmers/designers.

Someone said that, as a gaming device, anything less than 128GB is laughable. I disagree. Considering the resolution of the device, it doesn't need as much space. The total number of pixels (480*320=153600) is only a fraction of what I run my games at (1280*1024=1310720), less than 1/8, which means the whole game could be about 1/8 the size, depending on the type of game. And with a different architecture, code might be more efficient, and if they put in a GPU (which would be utterly awwesome), that could make it even more efficient.

I just thought it was funny how you tried to make the person who posted look stupid considering the number of Apps coming out... it was only a matter of time before this app was available. This may mean we will see these items on the ipod touch, as the DSi costs half the price of an ipod touch.:o
