Hi,

I have an American iPhone 1.1.1 that is unlocked so I could use it in Canada.

I would like to upgrade to the newer firmware but am not sure how. I am scared of bricking the phone.

Any help would be great :)

Thanks,

I have never heard of anybody bricking an iPhone.
I'm not positive if this will work but can you upgrade it to 2.1 and then just put in a different sim card?
Another try would be a jailbreak attempt.

It's not as bad as the first iPod touch firmware.
I say the 1G 8GB iPod touch with firmware 1.1 was a complete rip off for $300.

I'm a bit of a newb. By 2.1 do you mean 1.1.2? What is the newest version I should try to get to?

Tell iTunes to restore your iPhone. It will tell you there is a newer version to restore to. Do it. After its done, your phone will be in jail. Use quickpwn to get it out. Dont worry, you wont "brick" it. You will be very happy with 2.1.

Do do you have a link for that program? pwnage.iphone-dev.org doesn't seem to work.

Even with an unlocked iphone if I click Update in iTunes I won't have problems?

This sounds easy.

What do you mean by "in jail". Does this mean I can't use it on any other networks and I need to "jailbreak" it to be able to use it on Canadian networks?

I'm going to try this.

I'm downloading the software right now.

Everyone agree this is the course of action??

Should I have the SIM card (Canadian one) in or out when I perform all of this?

@$%@

Well iTunes won't detect the phone because I don't have a valid SIM card (not the AT&T one or whatever)

I'm trying QuickPwn but it doesn't detect the phone either. I go to the next step and eventually it asks me for the Bootloader v3.9 and Bootloader v4.6 which are where?

I found the bootloaders searching through google. Hopefully this works :(

Well I wish you luck.
Really hope your process goes well.

I am planning on doing something similar to what you are.
I'm going to buy an original iPhone from somebody.
My idea is not to use it as a phone, but to use it as an iPod touch with a camera.
I currently don't know what firmware it has.
