Apple is the only company who has got it completely 100% right with digital music. They built a product, but just as importantly they built a media application to manage content, to buy content, and to install updates. Its an interaction of hardware and software, is the reason Apple has done so well in this market. They also scored key firsts with the music industry in terms of DRM.

MySpace are going into something they know absolutely nothing about (I mean in terms of hardware and software), and will probably come out with a nice looking cheap product, that will flop immensely for the reasons I described. As will Dell, as did Microsoft.

Myspace has no chance.
They are heading head first into a market that is already established.

If they want to become popular with digital music and media players, they need to create new technologies and products no one has seen before. If it' just another iPod wanna-be it will fail.

If it is designed anything like their website, then it'll be a pile of crud.

Wow, cant see how a company with no exposure to hardware and limited exposure to software, make a claim of fighting with a market leader like that. Whats next, an OS to compete with windows?

It could (knowing the stupidity of people) gain a tiny market share >1%.

But as a direct iPod competitor? Please...

Things that were said about Apple when they released their first iPod:

- no experience in making mp3 players
- will only be a niche product
- no one will buy it
- etc.

Sound familiar?

good point but apple were the first to introduce truly portable and easy to use mp3 players, they are now made by every second company on earth.

How many MP3 players do you think are on the market? How many are competing with the iPod? Tons. Creative, Sony and Microsoft can't even do it. You really think some stupid bloated social network website is going to do it?

Like I said,
They would only succeed if they were unique in making a different new type of technology.

The iPod brought the simplicity and (mostly) harddrives to MP3 players.
Myspace would have to make something new and advanced to succeed.
