GOTY 2008:

Who do you think will win it this year?

I'm think LittleBigPlanet because of the cute factor, and the pure fun of gameplay!

Double post?

I can imagine something with history getting this year's 2008, something like Fallout 3.

Personally I'd give it to Smash Bros Brawl. I've still to play any game that's pulled me away from that for more than a day, on any system.

MGS4 or GTA4 will get it, they both got a lot of perfect scores from most respectable review places rather than just the "offical" magazines. But GOTY choices are picked by people with amnesia, so if the game didnt come out in the fall then they wont remember it, so their summer releases will really hurt their chances.

Well if Gears 2 isn't as repetitive, maybe that. I probably think LBP though. Just cuz.

WOW!!, really? I found that after the initial 10-15 hours of play the game gets boring and repetitive, maybe it was just me?

That's ok I find it very hard to play most modern games. I normally give up after a few hours let alone 10-15 :D Brawl is probably the only console game that I've stuck to so far this gen. Last gen I was glued to Burnout 3, GTA 3:VC and SA, Metroid Prime 1 and Melee. Barring Brawl I've been unimpressed with all their sequels on current gen systems.

LBP for me, of the games I've played. It was SOO different from anything else. The community focus is great!

I can see GeOW2 getting some love. MGS4 could see love, and Fallout 3(but I've yet to play any of those, so take thats for what its worth)

MGS4. Not only is it a great game, but the "last hurrah" for Snake. LBP definitely gets most innovative game and GOTY runner up.

*Edit - Haven't played GOW2 yet, I need a cortisone shot in my left hand. :(

I have a few games of the year, i'd struggle to pick just one.

The creative streak in me loves...

LittleBigPlanet
Banjo Kazooie : Nuts & Bolts
Viva Pinata (DS)
Viva Pinata : Trouble in Paradise (360)

The child in me (not in a Micheal Jackson way) loves...

Lego Batman & Lego Indiana Jones

The boy racer in me loves...

Wipeout HD
GRID
PURE

The video game killer in me loves...

MGS4
Fallout 3
Far Cry 2

...........
and I still have plenty of games yet to play before the years out
including Mirrors Edge (great demo), Prince of Persia, Resistance 2 etc...

Good year for gaming overall I think.

Heres the table:

MGS4
LBP
Gears 2
Fallout 3
GTA4

I guarantee they won't pick an exclusive(even if it deserves it like MGS4) because all it will do is piss off fanboys from each side.

My opinion is Dead Space.

Yea, be damned if they don't agree with what you think constitutes as GotY!

But I honestly believe GTA4 will have it hook(er) line and sinker. Granted I hate the game and hope the next GTA's will have a little more humour and be fun again.

I think you've got a point here, although (like already stated) that a single platform idea would be bad (I'm not too sure about that though, because most of the superb games this year are only for 1 platform)

Having now grown utterly addicted to LBP's create mode, i'm going have to say it's probably one of the greatest games I've ever had the privilege of playing.

Stephen Fry Rocks.... just wish he could comment on my levels :D

This is almost exactly what I came into this thread to write. Dead Space was mind blowing. I just started FO3 and GOW2. GTA 4 was nothing special, but will get a lot of acclaim because of the big name and advertising. I don't have a PS3, so I can't comment on MGS4 and LBP, but they both look really good.

I'm gunna say GTA wins GOTY, but not because it deserves it...

I think GTA 4 has the best chance, with LBP having an equal chance. MGS IV may get the award from a few critics, but I don't think it'll get the majority of the GOTY awards.

I'm hoping Persona 4 wins and deserves the award for years best RPG, but I'll see in December.

What is the date that GOTY is released?

BOSS10L
Nov 15, 2008, 09:18 PM
Okay, I've since finished GOW2 and played quite a bit of LBP (thumb be damned!). GOW2 is a great game, but I'm not so sure it is GOTY worthy. Epic definitely upped the ante this time around, it was one helluva ride. I still have to say that I was quite annoyed with the somewhat linear storyline that left just as many questions as answers, and the usual horrible dialogue.

Sure, I know games like GOW aren't known for their gripping dialogue or epic storylines, but having a bunch of characters grunting and spewing expletives just for the sake of spewing them grows tiresome. Much like the characters and people of GTA4 for example.

LBP is as fun as it is innovative. I can easily see months of my life melting away playing other people's levels as well as creating my own.

I still stand by my original post though, MGS 4 for GOTY, with LBP as a very close runner up. I agree with Mr. Lax though, an exclusive will likely not win, and that is truly a shame.

Still sticking to LBP with both Banjo & Viva Pinata 2 in joint second.

However still to get my hands on Resistance 2, Mirrors Edge, TombRaider : Underworld & Prince of Persia yet...... Though I doubt any of them will rock me as much as those others.

MRU is right. Both.

While the game isn't the deepest (really, it's about 25 seconds of 'awesome' repeated countless times) it's the most fun I have had all year on a game.

Graphics are the best on a console (art style isn't all that amazing but from a technical standpoint, it's fantastic). The music is fitting, sound effects are great (very nice, bloody, mushy, fleshy death sounds), story is better (dialogue is still laughable), and the progession is top notch. You feel like you are always progressing, moving along and seeing new places. The world is still ****ing drab and depressing but it's supposed to be.

There are little touches that make the gameplay better, things like when you kill a guy, Marcus will mutter "looks dead to me" "scratch one grub" etc. not to be funny (though some are) but to tell you the dude is dead as it can be hard to tell when they are behind cover. Or the variety, amazingly, that is in the game like the "bowser's castle" like level (David Ellis from 1up came up with the description) or the boss battles or the rather creepy-yet-platformer-ish level. The new weapons like the flamethrower or automatic pistol, or Horde mode (which will like grow dull soon but whatever) are all welcome additions to the Gears 1 base.

It's just a polished game that is a lot of fun. It's better in pretty much everyway than Gears 1, which is what a sequel should be. Now as long as Gears 3 have 4-player co-op (gears 2 screams for it) I'll be happy. There aren't a lot of "well, it's awesome but..." moments IMHO like there are in other games (ie. repetitive/archaic mission structure in GTA IV, conflicted gameplay in MGS 4, previous gen menus/actions/animations in Fable II, dependence on community contribution [and less moderation :p] in LBP, etc).

but that's just me.

I'm sticking to my original choice in dead space because the story was engaging from start to finish and they pulled of the space atmosphere & scares very well...The story was interesting as well.

LBP is right next to DS. I haven't really smiled or actually laughed at a video game joke until LBP game to the market....its adorable, fun, challenging and did I mention FUN. I'm impressed that something so Non-violent can capture so much attention and really live up to the hype....now thats EPIC to me.

LBP is definitely a breath of fresh air.

Sorry you're going elsewhere. Why do you think it's imitating LBP?

:( aww okay, I think that the creation tools in LBP are going to be copied lots once developers see how much fun it is. Look at... Lets say Unreal Tournament, or GTA, or DOOM. There are several games that are trying to imitate, but it think its a lost cause. They copies will never be equal to the original. These games are just trying to make profit off of something that people like, and is a tested idea. Game developers don't want to come up with something new and original, and the more games that are out the harder it becomes for the developers to create something new.

To summarize (because i don't think i actually answered your question), i think that based on the proximity of release date on these two games. It's not really imitating, it just happened to have a similar idea of collecting parts, creating your own vehicles, and using them in levels.

JackAxe

Speaking of developers copying, Microsoft is already on the MEE TOOOO bandwagon for LBP, did you see this;

Is it any good though?

Yes it's excellent. It's like the original Viva Pinata. It's a deeply complex game hidden underneath a child like magical world.

In many way's like Viva it's flawed in this regard as the complexity wont win favors with children market, and the graphical style may not appeal to adults.

However if your enamored by both great art style and the joy of creative freedom then yes it's an enormously entertaining game, and one that like the original Viva Pinata will win over a cult following and will be looked back on with great fondness, even if it commercially isn't a 'triumph'.

Both it and LBP are fantastic and I'll happily sit down and waste a few hours on both with a :) on my face.

It's the age old problem. To make something new and original that is widely accepted. Even looking on my server at what indie gamers want, most of the downloads are for my more traditional games.

To summarize (because i don't think i actually answered your question), i think that based on the proximity of release date on these two games. It's not really imitating, it just happened to have a similar idea of collecting parts, creating your own vehicles, and using them in levels.
This isn't a new thing though, take a look at BlastWorks on the Wii and Xbox360. Even indie games like Knytt Stories have a similar method of creating levels and sharing them and Smash Bros Brawl, whilst offering a basic version of this lets players unlock new parts to build (and share) their own levels with.
And then of course there's Garry's Mod where people construct levels or whatever they want in groups online.
Just like how Mario Galaxy is technically nothing new - LBP is just using old ideas and pushing them forward into a much better gaming formula.
