View Full Version : We're sorry but Ancestry.com is temporarily unavailable

For the last day or so, the entire Ancestry.com web site has been shut down. The only information they offer subscribers is, "We are undergoing routine maintenance or we may be experiencing unexpected technical problems." IOW, we're in big technical poop, and we don't want to talk about it. For a while yesterday, the site was generating visible SQL errors and other weird issues. Now, we get this generic "out of service" message.
Ancestry.com has become an important part of our business -- expensive, but worth it. They probably have millions of users. It's not much short of shocking to find such a popular and important internet destination closed down without any explanation, or apparently, any ETA for its return.
This seems unprecedented to me. Even more surprisingly, the media hasn't picked up on this at all.

Have you tried another browser, clearing caches, cookies, location, computer etc. etc.

No. This is puzzling. Nobody else is seeing the "unavailable" page?

Working for me as well, maybe it's an issue that deleting cache/cookies can solve?

Maybe but is anyone else a subscriber? Try a search, and let me know what happens.

Okay, this is so strange. It worked on another Mac here, so I flushed the cache in Safari on this one -- and now it works again!

Cache issues can be annoying when you visit a page like that however if other people can get on that is one of the first things to try.
Good that it was a simple fix.

It was probably down and then came back up, but since your browser tries to load as much from cache as possible, it just didn't go get the new stuff. Caching is great when it works, but can be a real pain sometimes.
