I thought we were getting a return to the John McCain of old after a gracious concession speech and humorous appearance on Leno. I guess not.

2002:

I think McCain can't wait to go back to being Mr. Nice Guy, but the GOP isn't letting him off the hook. They're blaming him for the miserable results in the election ("you weren't hard-right enough, you old softie!"), and now they want him to make up for it by salvaging this very important Senate seat at any cost, because he owes it to the party.

McCain - moderate to conservative Republican desperately trying to see which his party was all this year and keep up with soundbytes.

He's a politician, and a master one at that. He didn't get to where he is by being stupid. As dishonest as, let's say Newt? Maybe. :)
