tonight, my blackbook marked a big X in the battery icon in my finder bar.

I took out the battery and placed it again, and it's now "calculating", it's got 82% left, but it won't charge (the power adaptor is fine because I ran the computer off of it with the battery off, and ran fine), but while the power adaptor is connected it won't light up the little led that shows if the battery is charging (orange) or if it's charged (green).

so, it seems to be a battery issue..... is my battery dead? or is it a mother board issue?

That definitely sounds like a faulty battery. Go to apple, they replaced my battery for me. I had the same happenings as you, although a new battery did not fix my problem.

I found out that the prongs that connected to my battery were actually not touching the battery, and caused erratic battery behavior. In that case, I bent the prongs out a little to make sure they touch, and voila no more battery problems.

That is just in case you come across the same problems as me.

good luck mate
