LP (record) Transfer Advice

Seeking advice on how to best transfer my LP (record) collection into iTunes. I know there are services that can transfer to CD which I could then import into iTunes, but, hey, they're kind of pricey. Aside from a record player what else will I need? Thanks.

ATPM looks like an excellent source for Mac related information.
