hello. i'm a college student and i use a hotmail address...don't really want to switch addresses, so i'm looking for an alternative to entourage, which sort of sucks.
does thunderbird support http mail?
if not, what else besides entourage does?
i already know there are plugins for apple mail...tried them and found them to be not so fantastic.
thanks!

I'm not totally sure what you mean by http mail, but I think thunderbird pretty much does anything, if you get the right 'add-on' (extension). I love thunderbird.

http mail is hotmail...it's not a POP account, so i don't think thunderbird can access it (i just installed thunderbird to find out that it doesn't work.)

How about Eudora (http://www.eudora.com/) or Outlook Express from Microsoft?
You might also check out this forum thread about using hotmail with Thunderbird.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=47212 Eudora is the mail client to use when you don't trust HTML mail. Outlook Express has not been and never will be ported to MacOS X.

If I am not mistakened, I don't think that any other email client can access Hotmail email from an App other than Microsoft programs (Entourage, Outlook).

Another one is hotwayd (http://hotwayd.sourceforge.net/). It uses the same modified-WebDAV protocol that Outlook Express uses. Works well enough for me.
The only downside to using Hotmail is that you're using Hotmail. Hotmail has been dropping mail without delivering it. My site gets no bounces but only about 1% of the mail it sends to Hotmail addresses ever gets delivered. Doesn't even land in the recipient's Junk folder. Customer Service basically told me to go screw myself, that they have no oblilgation to deliver any particular piece of email.

any suggestions for free POP email? I'm not in a position to get established with a provider, since I'm in school and will be moving when I graduate in May (still don't know where!)

I haven't used this but this supposedly works with Mail.app and hotmail.

Edit: Never mind... sounds like you've already tried it and didn't like it.
