Will this provide GPU enabled H.264 decoding or is it just aimed at iChat compatibility?

I was just about to ask this but knowing Apple the answer is probably the latter

1. It would be larger than 3MB.
2. Don't you think they'd mention it?

Apple didn't mention that the new MacBook's had it. It is the kind of update that Apple wouldn't mention.

Actually it is a pain. Im uploading a terabyte of information to my online backup service, which if is interrupted(Ie reboots) then it starts all over from the beginning. You know how slow a terabyte uploads with only a 768kb upload?

it is a PITA though, because then the first few times apps open, they are much, much slower (namely Safari, iPhoto, and Itunes). ugh.

Ah...never had that issue in iChat and I've watched stuff using QuickTime and chatting on iChat.

Nice to know that it shouldn't crash under those circumstances though.

Launch times will be slower. Performance of the applications will definitely not change.

No I dont HAVE to do anything. I dont HAVE to backup my stuff. I could simply risk it. I dont HAVE to pay taxes, again another risk.

So whats your point? Do you HAVE to type on a message board telling me I dont HAVE to install it right now?

YaY for Updates!

I think it'll show up for everyone who has quicktime.

and it requires a reboot. Boo for Reboots!

You back things up for a reboot? I do backups once a month or so. (Manual. I don't need no fancy time machine.) The only time I will actually back things up before a reboot is a point upgrade. I.e., 10.5.5 -> 10.5.6.

No, Im doing an initial offsite backup where I am sending all of my data, pictures/movies to a server. Im not running time machine right now. But eventually will. I have a TC, which is full with backups. So I will send that to the server, along with everything else. After the initial backup, I will start time machine all over, and delete the backups off of TC, fill it up again, then backup that info onto the server, and keep going.

Its a good thing the offsite server is unlimited storage:)

Does this update screw up iMovie capture using the iSight? I use iMovie video capture every few days for Youtube and I just got a fresh copy of Leopard on my MB. I don't want to do that again... Cheers!

Why don't you download the update later? Are you planning on using iChat while watching a QuickTime video and uploading your TB of info? Perhaps you can wait - or are you one of those instant updaters that run home for a keyboard firmware update? :D

My girlfriend swears this vastly improved 720p x264 (!) playback on her Powerbook G4.

I got the update. I just don't watch much video on my computer. Oh well, it doesn't look like it's messed anything else up, so that's good! :)

By my calculation that'll take about 120 days and given my experience with Mozy, you won't max out your 768kb upload either, so it'll take even longer...

Personally with Mozy I gave up trying to backup my 120GB of music to the service - it just killed the connection - so now I just maintain the core data (about 30GB) and that works fine.

Is it possible to REMOVE this update? As soon as this update installed, every restart results in terrible screen corruption. Moving an app around the screen will "clean" it up, but each restart brings it back.

And, sadly, I just noticed a corrupted icon in the dock that I can't "clean" up. I have a Time Machine backup, so can that be used to roll back this update?

Cut the guy some slack, pcb. He's just saying that this update probably has a lower priority than your terabyte upload.

BTW, who do you use for your online backup?

now when I restart, my screen stays black for 5-7 seconds after the DVD drive check before the startup chime... weird

Well I'm getting pretty annoyed by that as well, the update QuickTime h.264 compatibility update just doesnt seem to want to install, other updates that dont require restart install perfectly fine.
My MacBook Pro (late 2008) prompts for a restart every now and then, or when i use the software update app. I let it do its thing and it restarts without installing a thing (the h.264 update i mean).
Just keeps on prompting for that reinstall... I'm not transferring petabytes of data or anything but its starting to get pretty annoying.

I haven't tested it with any other updates that require a restart, so i don't know if the problem is specifically related to this h.264 update

I found this link of someone with a problem with this update as well. Its not the same problem but he claimed deleting the update file in Library/Updates and re-downloading the update file solved the problem for him. I tried this but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Does your backup service support rsync? That would be the best way to do this; if the upload gets interrupted you can resume it, and you can always update your backup quickly and easily by using rsync again.
