This isn't uncommon, I've been to a few openings and they usually have this type of giveaway, aside from the usual swag (t-shirts).

The tshirts and giveaway are common, but I haven't heard of anything like these gift bags before. I can't find any details from clicking on the link though...

I live in SF and got an email from apple yesterday about the opening. I really want to know what's in the grab bags. It could just be 600 bucks worth of USB cables.

I'm going to the opening (lucky me :D), and I'm very tempted to get one of these bags. I can only assume it contains an iPod of some sorts, which I really want. I guess we'll see.

I stood in line for more than half an hour to get into the "Grand Opening" last night for the new Apple Store in Mission Viejo and expected some kind of celebration deal like this or otherwise - NOTHING!
The tiny store was packed needing crowd control in and out.
I know Apple stores in the past have offered special deals or discounts on such occassions - and this San Francisco deal is just adds to our expectations.
I was really surprised and had to ask about discounts since there were no signs or anything to be told there was no special deals - that they could only offer them if they were being offered nationally.
So San Francisco gets a special deal but we down here dont????
I should say that while I welcome a store so close to home, this store is the smallest Apple store I've ever seen - well at least I now have the choice of *3*, yes three Apple stores within a 20 minute drive - Costa Mesa (South Coast Plaza), Newport Beach (Fashion Island) and now Mission Viejo.
I wonder how long CompUSA will keep there apple store in a store now - no incentive at all to shop there.

sf is a huge flagship store like in ny and tokyo, plus theres a whole lot of artsy mac users up here. they probably figured that offering the gift bag would sell more units at an apple store surrounded by Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Saks, and the like.

Yes -- maybe they think that about sf.
But I doubt the mv store sold much -- just lots of folks streaming in to find out what deals there might be, finding nothing on offer, and streaming back out asap to grab a t.
I know I would have spent $$$$'s if there was a one-time only deal or discount.
So Apple lost sales in the end. First impressions can count a lot.
