This is an absolute insult to the consumer market. How can microsoft insult our intelligence like this?

This was obviously a complete marketing ploy..
think about it..

Windows Security issues are abosuletly brutal. People are getting frustrated with patching and virus issues.

What better way to relieve the blame than release an APPARENT code leak to scape goat the security issues now! ...

funny how over the last 9 years .. no other OS source code nore Office code had been jeopardized...

It seems fishy that .. WOW .. now we have longhorn coming out in 2ish years.. how are we going to get people to switch over...

Face it.. Windows is a security nightmare.. Microsoft is spending a ton of money developing longhorn.. they want people to use longhorn.. they want to abandon all older OS support.. this is the perfect way of doing it! .. Blame the "HACKER" community for them having to abandon XP and NT...

People like to have a bad guy to Blame, and a Hero to save them...

This will also open up them selling millions of copies of longhorn and FORCING an upgrade for consumers.

I can't believe people are buying into the story.. hook, line and sinker.

What kind of company lies and cheats people like this and gets away with it??
How much do they actually care about the consumer to do something like this!

Apple at least was honest about OS X transition upgrading.. They told people we are abandoning 9.. so upgrade now.. it is the future.. no smoke and mirror publicity stunts like this..

Absolutely insulting what Microsoft is doing.

And it just shows how much they care about your security and data to release code like this! .. Face it.. they want your money, that is all.. they will do anything to get it...

Somehow I dont think a ploy like that is going to encourage me to go out and buy Longhorn in 4 years time

I thought I was just being paranoid when the same thing occurred to me. I still think I'm paranoid, but at least now I believe I'm justifiably paranoid.

Since Microsoft obviously can't identify their security holes even if they fell in them, why not turn over the code to those that can? :) I think this was intentional, with the hopes that these hackers will identify most, if not all, of the security problems in their code. And they're doing it for free to boot!

Wait wait... what is this supposed to mean?

Fourthly, for Microsoft to have this code paraded in public is hugely embarrassing. Not least because the code is littered with profanity and might show that many Microsoft programmers do not do a very good job.

Microsoft programmers put swear words in between the lines of code? Such as "Working for Microsuck sucks sh*t"?

When I heard this news story, my first reaction was <nelson>ha ha</nelson>. Then I thought "oh no, this means more hackers learning more ways to attack Windows systems", which I dislike because my PC-using acquaintances will suffer further attacks. But this article makes the point that hackers won't bother reading the source code because there are plenty of holes in Windows as it is - no need to hunt very hard for new ones! So back to <nelson>ha ha </nelson>.

Read my sig below. MS didn't release this. It appears that the software came from 3rd party vendor's system. There are dump files that point to Mainsoft as a originator of the leak.
Give it a read with the conspiracy theories.

It was a 3ed party, 100% not M$...

I mean really.

Come on guys you think MS would do this?

Nahh...

If it were a disgruntal employee then it would be Win 3.0, 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP....

Not just NT and 2000.

The Windows source code leak was in February. It's been a few months, and now we have another major leak: source code for Cisco networking devices. link (http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/story/0,10801,93215,00.html)

Russian security site SecurityLab.ru reported Saturday that the operating system code -- used to power a majority of the company's networking devices -- was stolen from Cisco's corporate network, with some leaked onto the Internet. The site estimated that around 800MB of code was taken.
This is going to let hackers look for router insecurities that could affect a lot of businesses, and many of our ISPs. Ouch!
