Help! Firewire drive doesn't mount to desktop!

Running OSX.3.2

A coworker asked me to recharge his iPod so I plugged it into an available firewire port on the back of my firewire drive. Everything was going well until the finder locked up (for reasons unknown) and it forced me to reboot. Upon reboot, the fire wire drive didn't show up.

A little searching around the net I found that the 'fsck_hfs' command works on getting things fixed. But I'm missing something, since its not working.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Sorry to give such a broad reply, but I've found Tech Tool Pro 4 to be amazing with all my hard drive issues...

I bought it to clear up a hard drive issue, then I found it had AMAZING maintenance options - far above any prior version or any other program.

I haven't tried the most recent version, but TTP4 has some really cool features:

-it runs most hardware tests simultaneously
-it saves directory structure information every 2 hours (and saves a copy to all 4 HDs in case of multiple failures
-it checks my volume structure on all my drives (4) every 4 hours
-if it detects any trouble, I get an alert dialogue box and an e-mail!

There's a lot more - I highly recommend it...

was the firewire drive you plugged the ipod into bus-powered?
Can you see the hard drive in system profiler?
have you tried another firewire port?

Diskwarrior worked for me after a 2 seperate internal hard drive failures this year, if you have it give it a go.

Tried disk warrior and it only recovered 2 gigs of 70gigs....and I still get an error with the fsck that won't fix.

I'm going to call tech support and see if I have any other options

What happened with mounting your drive? I am now not able to mount my QPS external hard drive. I get a message saying "Disk attempting to mount as Unknown has failed verification or has failed to mount". Disk utility stays gray, so can't try to repair, or verify. Disk Warrior froze! when I tried to rebuild.
I have Jaguar, 10.2.8 as my OS.
Any clues, anyone? :confused:

is this drive the only FW device attached? what computer are you running and is it a 3rd party FW card? Have you tried it on another computer?

I had this same problem earlier this week. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=63787) Norton version 7 recovered all my files. I'm presently backing up and going to reformat.

Here's the craziest thing ever, but it works on occasion. Boot into OS 9 and use Disk First Aid. It's saved my drives several times where nothing else would even touch it.

Sorry to be "away" for so long.
I tried a number of things, including Alsoft techsupport suggestions for Disk Warrior. Ran it on OS 9, and First Aid, no progress.
Wound up shipping it back to QPS (now part of Digital Performance) after discussion with tech support that it was a corrupted directory tree due to using it with OS 9 and X, iMovie files under both. They could not repair, but were able to transfer data to a new drive. That's good. Next I will be installing Norton for OS X, and doing more regular backups!
