i definatly think metallica redeemed themselves with this album after the tragedy that was st. anger  after hearing just the first song i was impressed..
the album artwork is really cool too, i ordered the shirt for it, check it out:
METALLICA DEATH MAGNETIC (http://rockworldeast.com/)

very very good album, I am a fan of mainly the more recent metallica stuff, Load, reload, ST. ANGER! yes I really do like St. anger.
but Death Magnetic is well worth the wait!
track 2 is my fave.

I agree. I thought I was crazy about it sounding terribly (I ripped it from CD to ALAC to 256kbps AAC) but after googling some things it seems like the production (or mixing, whatever) was sketchy.
I downloaded a mix (Decifer remix I think it was called) where someone took the unmastered Guitar Hero mixes and basically re-mixed the album to take away the clipping and everything, it sounds SO much better. I was able to get a FLAC copy as well and have pretty much replaced my own CD rips with this guys remix.
As for the albu, I really like it. I'm as close to a Metallica fan-boy that you can get without actually being one (ie I feel like I can be objective) but I actually didn't mind some of St. Anger (Dirty Window, Sweet Amber). Death Magnetic is definitely a better album (in my opinion) and is most certainly going to get a better reaction from the general population.

I don't have the album yet, but from what I've heard the quality tracks are found in the latter half of the album. I think the main issue with the new music they're pushing out is James is no longer drinking and therefore does not realize his voice is getting kind of emo (which while being good for other styles of music, does not suit the majesty that is Metallica).
Despite all my natural instincts, I'm hesitant to torrent the album as when a band this old gets it back together and puts out some quality tracks I feel as if I should pay homage to them... literally.

the songs are definately back to the old sound. tracks are lengthier and much more raw sound of metallica.
*thumbs up
also rick rubin makes a substantial contribution to the sound, as he did with re-vamping the direction and growth of Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight.

I've been listening to it constantly for a few days now.
"Broken, Beat, and Scarred" was so ingrained in my mind that I actually stopped talking during an English presentation because I was thinking of how awesome the song was!

That is quite an understatment. I could have recorded the band and made them sounds just as bad for 1/10th the price they paid...:p

I got it a few weeks before it was released but I never listened to it yet. I did hear a song or two played a few months back when I was getting a tattoo and it sounded like old Metallica. One day I'll listen to the whole thing.
I gave up on them after S&M, that was the last thing I liked.

Death Magnetic is better then and load, Reload and St. Anger. I hated those CD's and it's about time they got back to their roots. With Robert Trujillo I think is a great addition also, and he's a great bassist. I never really liked Jason, then again I'm not a fan of bassists who use picks.
