Apple Releases Pro Apps Updates 2008-004

Apple today released Pro Apps Update 2008-004 (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Pro_Apps_Updates_2008_004) for users of Final Cut and Logic application packages. The update includes Final Cut Pro 6.0.5, Compressor 3.0.5, Color 1.0.3, and Shake 4.1.1. While Apple's download page simply mentions that the update "addresses general performance issues and improves overall stability," further details on the changes included in these updates can be found in the accompanying release notes (http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/Final_Cut_Studio_2.0_rn/). The update weighs in at 149 MB and requires OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.5.

They still make these, what did you call it, 'Pro tools'? Seriously, these have been getting pretty stale relative to the compelling integration that Adobe is doing now.

I remember reading in several threads a while ago that MacRumors tries to get the more "interesting" stories (confirmed or not) on the front page and the less interesting (even if they are confirmed) on page 2. That's mass media for you.

As for the updates, I don't really use them. But if it makes using these apps easier/better for those people who do, yay!

Having been to Adobe's CS4 UK tour and been able to try it out (Premier Pro, Sound Booth etc) I still prefer Final Cut Studio.

However, I loved Adobe Bridge - that is a really cool application. Their CS4 suite is full of awesome features, I just find it a bit bloaty to use. Even in their demo's on the high-end iMac the video playback in Sound Booth was rubbish because he had Photoshop and Premier Pro running.

Only advantage of Adobe CS4 is it is multi-platform.

Express versions are the cut down consumer versions of the Pro apps. They get different updates.

also, the last time a "Pro Apps Update" came from Apple few months ago, it showed up in Software Update for me...

Before I upgrade, does anyone know if FCP 6.0.5 projects are backwards-compatible with 6.0.4?

This update includes Redcode support for Color. This is HUGE. If you have no idea what this means, well, you're probably not a pro. If you DO know what it means, you realize that for many folks this alone makes this a humongous update.

Adobe may have Bridge, but Apple has Final Cut Server. FCServer is BIG. And complex. And pretty new. It is a MUCH more significant, pro-level solution than Bridge.

I would love to see some solid updates from Apple regarding Final Cut Studio. I'm sure the coming NAB in April will show us what is coming. The release update has been pretty set for some years now. But it's not like NOTHING has been going on with this stuff.

What is Redcode? Wikipedia says it is a programming language adopted from a computer game and complex memory arrays - a "pro" who video edits would know all this eh? ;)

REDCODE is the wavelet-based codec used for recording by the RED ONE digital cinema camera. To color-correct footage shot with the RED ONE inside of Color, you used to have to transcode the footage to a codec such as ProRes, which Color could deal with natively. Now that transcoding step is no longer necessary, which means greater quality and less of a workflow bottleneck. It essentially turns the RED ONE plus Color into a very, very slick solution at a ridiculously low price.

Red cameras are not really pro cameras though, more semi-pro. It's all good though. No support for ArriRAW or Aaton formats, so it wont be making it into my line of work for video edit. Lucky I'm an ADR recordist.

I wonder if this will fix the system crippling bugs I have in SoundTrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and Final Cut Pro.

I had to reinstall the whole suite for the fifth time this month, due to some general error which keeps the apps from even booting up.

Cupertino is hiring video editors and motion graphics artists to test software.
Hopefully the next release of Final Cut Studio will really be a Suite and not JBOA (Just a Bunch Of Apps).

what a laugh. that's exactly the attitude the industry had about fcp a few years ago!

i know of exactly zero shops in my area that are using avid now. we just took a huge loss dumping our adrenaline hd system because we went all fcp and had no need for it.

the red camera, like fcp, is a revolution. if you think it's not "pro," you haven't checked their site recently. with resolutions up to 9k (28k for the largest "brain"), they are well beyond "semi-pro." my friend in the portland, oregon area told me that the rental houses around portland had all their 35mm gear gathering dust, because everything is being shot on red.

panavision, arri and aaton had their chance, but like avid, they rested a bit too long on those laurels while the landscape changed around them
